So my boyfriend and I are looking to take a little vacation this summer. Time frame we are looking at for going is likely going to be in Early-Mid July. I have a contract job mid march through the end of June and it may spill over a little into July, so pretty much when it is over is when we want to go. We are looking to take a vacation for about a week's time.
Now due to having tons of money plus both being under 25, renting a car where we go is going to be a no go. So we're going to need to be driving where we go. Now I have a car with pretty decent gas mileage on highways (about 30 mpg or so) so gas won't be too much of an issue.
The destination we have in mind is the beach. We wanted to stay away from Florida, since it will be full of people and it tends to be rather expensive. We were potentially looking at the North/ South Carolina area, but we were looking for suggestions of good places to go. Obviously a beach is our main priority, but if there's other cool stuff around then that would be nice. We're into geocaching so if there was a park/ state park nearby with some cool caches that would be a nice bonus.
The area we will be driving from is Indianapolis. Which gives us easy access to lots of interstates. So that leaves us pretty open as far as what direction we'd like to travel. Ideally, we'd like someplace we can drive to in a day. Now, if that means getting up early in the morning to start and then getting there in the evening, that's ok.
Sorry this is so long, but I didn't it to be just some vague topic. I know what we have in mind, I'm just looking for suggestions for a place to go.

You could go to Cape Cod--a good chunk of it is part of the National Seashore, and there's ferries to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. Probably quite a lot of geocaching to be had.
The drive would be a bear though. Not really any further than the Outer Banks though.
And you have some wonderful beaches on the Great Lakes that are definitely within a days drive that are going to be much less crowded and much more natural (rather than the over groomed, carted in sand on the east coast). Having grown up in MI, here are some places I'd suggest:
Traverse City, MI and the Sleeping Bear Dunes
Mackinac Island, MI (and maybe a day trip to Tahquamenon Falls in the UP)
Sturgeon Bay/Egg Harbor, WI
Niagara Falls, NY/ONT
Vermont
Think about it.

I've been there on vacation several times, and every time I've had a total blast. The dining is good there, the beaches are clean and beautiful, the people are nice. There's an arcade on the boardwalk, and cool little shops everywhere. You can stay in a hotel, or rent a little beach house for cheap (they're really nice. That's what I did).
I did some searches on geocaches in cape may and apparently there are quite a bit.

There are also zoos and stuff you can go to. It's a really nice area.

I think maybe a lake would be ok, but I want to go somewhere that has a lot of piers.
Plus the experience of the Ocean is tops. I love it there.

Don't do this. I grew up here and it's a mess in the summer and expensive unless you're staying in a crap hole. The water is chilly and the beaches mobbed. Unless you go Mon-Fri it's going to be more headache than fun. Also, pretty much everything is overpriced, even the super markets raise their prices in the summer. As far as I'm concerned if I'm going into the pisshole known as Cape May County NJ during the hell months I'm at least going to Wildwood where I can hang with other people in their 20s, hit one of the many bars, spend the day on the free beach (or hitting a water park or two) and the night doing rides and games on the boardwalk.
Though if I were really going to go to a tourist beach in the summer I'd go to Tybee Island and Savannah, GA. Where you can float on an inner tube in warm water while drinking a beer.

You can do day trips to some of these places, but some of them can only be reached by a ferry, so for a multiple day trip, taking the boat there and back each day may not be so great.
For details on each of the places, you can cross reference the list with the National Park Service Web Site or just follow the cross link from the individual park wikipedia sites.

Edit: Not all of them have camping, but it's still a decent list to throw out there for Beach activities.
