Quick question: How does Apple plan their big announcements?
I know about Macworld, obviously, and I know that usually takes place now-ish, during the CES. I also know about the WWDC, which now falls close to the beginning of the second half of the year. But I seem unable to find any kind of calendar or anythign that would say when the next Apple event will be, for instance.
Is it a set thing, or do they just plan an event when they have something to announce?

They send out invitations to journalists and industry partners a couple of weeks before the event via email. This is the first anyone hears of the event.
These emails generally just consist of an image, containing vague hints about what the event will be about, and text describing where and when the event is.
Here's a couple of examples of the images in these emails:
Based on these vague emails, journalists show up. Steve may be unveiling a new iPod, an update to some software, or a new colour scheme for the Apple website. Nobody knows until the event begins.
