so i'm attempting to sell something online and i have an offer i'd like to accept but i'm in the united states, this gentleman is from norway.
I haven't used paypal a ton, so i'm unsure if anything like exchange rates or the like come into play, or if there's anything else pertinent i should know before i attempt this transaction.
also just out of curiosity, how long is the wait for me to transfer the money from paypal into my account? and do they take a percentage or how does that work?
Paypal will convert it for you. The easiest way would be for you to send the Norwegian an invoice in USD, and then his Paypal would convert things for him -- so you don't have to mess with doing the math.
The time it takes to transfer is based on his payment method. It can be between instantaneous or 7 days, although it's usually instantaneous or 3 days. It's rather established that you don't ship anything until your money is clear, and Paypal leaves a big notification up saying "Do not ship yet!" until the money is actually in your account.
They do take a fee, usually around 2%. I'm not sure if they charge an additional fee if there's currency conversion involved, but I imagine it's small.
if it's from a foreign country, or an unverified account, tell him that you'll hold off shipping until the money is in your personal bank account, not in paypal
paypal can and will freeze your funds if the buyer turns out to be an account thief... if the money is in your bank account they can send you nasty emails but can't touch your money.
