Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - David Beckham's next stop is in Los Angeles.

The English soccer star will join the city's Major League Soccer club, the Galaxy, after five seasons with Spanish Premier League team, Real Madrid.

The deal is reportedly worth $250 million, which would be one of the largest player contract in global sports history.

"After considering several options to stay in Madrid or join other major British and European teams, I have decided to join LA Galaxy," Beckham said in a statement obtained by BBC on Thursday.

Beckham is playing in the final year of a four-year contract with Madrid.

"I have enjoyed my time in Spain enormously and I am extremely grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to play for such a great team and their amazing fans," he continued. "I am proud to have played for two of the biggest clubs in football and I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world's most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own.

"For the rest of this season I will continue to give 100% to my coach, team-mates and fans as I believe manager Fabio Capello will bring this club and its supporters the success they truly deserve."

Beckham joined Real Madrid from Manchester United in July 2003. He has seen limited action this season, playing only in spot duty.

Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas talked about the team's interest in signing a player like Beckham, whose star power is exactly what United States soccer is desperate for.

"All of this leads to this race to become the first MLS super club, if you will," Lalas told BBC. "It is something we aspire to and in order to do that you have to have quality players, a direction and a passion, a good coach and you have to get credibility domestically and internationally.

"Signing players of Beckham's stature would be a wonderful step in the right direction not just for the Galaxy but for soccer in America."

MLS is really desperate for attention. First they let a minority group of owners buy DC United so (to quote the new owners) "black youths will become interested in sport loved the world over by minorities", then they bring in an aging star to bring a bunch of 13 year old girls to the games.

Why make thursday and tuesday games "naked titties night", it'd sure get me interested in a rather boring sport.

Oh, Manifest, I'm not denying the unneccessary nature of the Somalian bombings. All I'm saying is that they're a slight bit less unilateral than the rest of Bush's actions, and that's at least somewhat commendable.
