People have a disgusting habit of overreacting when some horrific first world problem like "my PS3 didn't work for a day" hits.
Let's fire a bunch of people because you had to talk to friends or watch TV or god forbid read or something for a day instead of play (some) PS3 games all because of some unimportant decision some engineer made years ago that caused an unforseen problem that fixed itself in a day.
I understand the "I paid for it, it should work all day every day" mentality, I really do, but Jesus sometimes you guys really lose sight of the importance of things.
Have any of you guys ever worked in a corporate office? I wouldn't be surprised about people getting fired over something like this. Mainly the wrong people. Usually by the people that should have been fired.

Personally, I'm more worried that we can't play offline games with this issue. I just wonder what other kind of server/console problem could happen that would lock you out of offline, single-player games.
"One day every 100 years" problem is one thing, but it showed a bigger issue, to me. Unless the clock was really the single only thing fucking up offline games, but if it's the case, that seems kinda weird to me.

Would it surprise me if someone were fired for it? No.
Is it worth firing someone from Sony's POV? Probably. They've had enough PR problems the past few years, this blowing up into a story large enough to make CNN and every major news site or webportal and every gaming site was a major embarrassment regardless of how quickly it was fixed and how inconsequential it actually was to PS3 owners. In Japanese corporate culture this probably was reason enough for a firing or two (or more).
Is a consumer calling for someone's firing for it stupid? Yes. 100%. Absolutely nothing about this was so deleterious to PS3 owners that they should be calling for anything at all, let alone firing people.
That is smart. I don't even have a PS3, and I feel like forgiving them. Made me chuckle.
o_O You don't even have a PS3 and you feel like forgiving them? So you're implying that people that own PS3's (you know, the people actually affected by this) are more likely to forgive them than you, someone that doesn't?

It's not that hard. The apology was so endearing he wants to forgive them despite the fact that to him there is nothing to forgive.

Just wanted to clear this up, becuase I too thought that there was some "gotta be online to play offline games" thing going on at first. Turns out it actually IS the clock. Heavy Rain (and other, usually newer games) pings the clock when gathering trophy information upon starting up. During that fateful Feb. 29th, the clock was crazy nutso, so the game didn't know what the fuck was going on and wouldn't start.
Heavy Rain, and Demon's Souls, White Knight Chronicles, and all those other games that wouldn't even load during this period all play fine offline, but were still affected even on consoles that had never been connected to the internet.

Oh, I see. Now that's a relief, though I wish they'd still patch it up so that if the clock is going nutso it just warns you that you won't get trophies of any kind, and then start the game.

Anyway, it's not a big deal then.
It's not a big deal in context, but given the known "sony kill switch" it seemed rather off.
Given how many of their high end products mysteriously fail right after warranty ends (tv's, laptops, just about everything) I can see why people would be upset. Sony also needs more bad PR about the quality, and reliability, of it's products like a hole in the head.

Everyone builds their products with a set lifetime. Cars don't break down for fun just outside warranty for no reason. I mean I had a Punto that was 10 years old when I got it but ran fine, after about 3 years it started having serious issues but it was 13 years old at that point. I doubt you could buy a car today that wouldbe running 10 years from now.
DarkWarrior is right, there are many people out there whose job is to test parts and devices and make sure they last the whole warranty time but not too long after that. It's not on a kill switch level, but it's just making sure they're good enough but not too good.
Not turning on the PS3 was the only surefire method to avoid the error.
Or owning a slim, I guess.
I have a late model fatty, and it was folding all day while connected to PSN. I didn't check it the day of, but it did not appear to be disrupted in any way the day after.
This may have been answered already, but I seem to see everyone saying that the problem is completely fixed. I was playing Uncharted 2 (offline) during the messed up date and everything seemed to be ok, but now when I look at my trophies, all of my Uncharted 2 ones were deleted. I still have my progress and stuff, and I even tried connecting the game online to maybe try and recover them or something, but nothing seemed to work. I'm not totally bummed, but I was just wondering if anyone else ran into that problem, and it was only for that one game, which I was able to play fine, jsut my trophies didn't save.
Running the game again should get the trophies back on the list (at 0%).
Re-syncing your trophies should get them back to where they were before the bug hit at least, I'm not making any promises though.
Anything unlocked while things were crazy might need to be unlocked again.

If it only needs an internet connection, it appears that PS3s were still connected during the outage.

No, for some reason it seems like the only ones I have unlocked are ones that I've gotten since the glitch.

People are just pointing out that it was a dumb comment.
Hey, people have been executed for less.
Hey, countries have gone to war for less.
I also don't disagree with the fact that people have in fact been fired for less somewhere.
