So, doing that brief sunshield N7 mission for the second time ever, I discovered the sun actually hurts you. I blew off my shields thanks to negligent use of explosive containers, and they weren't coming back...and my health wasn't either, until I found some shade. Kind of a neat consistency detail in an otherwise mundane mission. Would have made it more interesting with a couple of Geth or other saboteurs present to prompt the situation though.
I just thought EDI looked like that talking eyeball-y thing that comes out of the wall in Jabba's palace in Episode 6 until you fuckers said it was a vagina.
Does anyone know of a video of a disaster run? I kind of want to see everyone meet a grisly death but don't feel like playing all the way through to see it.

I actually really like that sunshield mission. Maybe I'm just a sucker for that scenery and the sort of contemplative feel of it.
(Also really likes the collapsing ship mission).
Those two were my favorite. They also totally don't need a weird explanation for why there's no dialogue. I think a few more of the N7 missions should be short little "oh I can handle this on my way" non-combat things.
God damn it - this is one of those games that improves on the original in so many ways that it's simply impossible to go back. Not good for a series that's supposed to be all about carrying characters over.
Seriously - how DID I play Mass Effect 1 before? I played soldier on normal difficulty first game. I hardly used powers at all and didn't use cover much either. I have no idea HOW I did this now, as an infiltrator. I've concluded I can't snipe so I've just buried all my skill points in pistol. What should I be doing to... well, stop dying? :?

Play a biotic.
The game becomes less about difficulty and more about opportunities to use physics for amusement.

Play soldier on casual and run & gun through what you want to carry over, switch classes in ME2

ME1 is pretty boring in comparison. Lots of walking around when you don't want to and backtracking.
The good part is that quest NPCs are actually memorable because they break the monotony.
Where , for the hell of me its hard for me to remember many of the side characters in ME2. That is ones that don't get killed.

I found infiltrator a really fun class in ME1. Once you get a decent rifle and put enough points in sniping becomes a lot easier. I actually found sniping in ME1 a bit more satisfying than in ME2 because the swaying makes headshots a lot harder to get.
I also found the infiltrator really fun in ME1. I just finished a playthrough so I could bring that character into ME2. I prefer hardcore. Not as stupidly annoying as insanity, but challenging. Sniping was fun.
I don't have much problem going back to ME1. I have some helpful checklists and such I put together to make my life easier and going through the game faster.
Even now, I still see things I didn't see before, and I've played through ME1 about 4 times now.
I'm using that infiltrator to get my insanity achievement on the 2nd game.
I played through ME1 like eight times but I'm not sure I could go back
I should because I could use a non-lame male Shep to carry over; I went super renegade on that file which more or less equals the default no import choices

Really even if you are Renegade there is no reason not to do the paragon route for Feros, Noveria and Wrex(if you count keeping him alive as paragon).
I learned this the hard way as well.

I'm pretty sure headshots don't actually do anything in ME1. There's no locational damage.

Years of playing FPS's has conditioned me to get a slightly bigger hit of dopamine when I snipe someone in the head.
Where , for the hell of me its hard for me to remember many of the side characters in ME2. That is ones that don't get killed.
Wait, what?
Aria and Patriarch, the SR-2 Engineers, Kelly 'Would hit on a giant sentient amoeba' Chambers, Captain Bailey, the matriarch bartender, the Asari cop and the 'Biotic god' in Samara's recruitment mission, Worf the Krogan, and those are just a few examples of awesome memorable characters off the top of my head.

hmm I suppose you are right, though for some reason I don't immediately think of the crew as side characters. Like Chakwas in ME1, I wouldn't call her major but I wouldn't call her side...but thats just weird semantics on my part.
It might just be the way my mind works, since a lot of these characters were part of a larger quest (e.g. Loyalty or Recruitment) . Whereas in ME1 a lot of small characters served as the Plot Giver/Rewarder- so you had to keep them more in mind. (e.g. I have to get back to Kahoku so his quest continues, I have to make sure I get the info to Emily Wong, I have to travel to 2 different planets for Helena Blake and then meet her at blank,,etc.)

the main difference between the first and second games is that in ME2, the combat is actually fun. In ME1 combat was for the most part boring, and it often felt like just a pacing mechanism between story points. In ME2 the simple act of shooting at dudes is something I still actively enjoy, even after 80+ hours with the game. I think this is largely because the difficulty is tuned much better, so that you don't just wind up with a completely broken character slowly chewing through enemies' immunity.
I also kind of liked that feros/noveria/vimire didn't have direct consequences for being a jerk, cause it frees you up to play it in the way you think your shepard would. Shooting the colonists is a totally reasonable position, for example, given that you have like five grenades to gas kill 15 of them and they're shooting at you. It's nice that thinking your shepard would go that route doesn't result in you not being able to buy the Ultimate +5 Assault Rifle of Faceraping.

This is so the wrong advice. How drunk are you on gooseberry juice are you on a scale of one to honking drunk?
Any class that doesn't has biotics in the first game is boring to play.
Adept is the powerhouse class and if you want to run through quickly you do so as a shotgun or AR adept.
Plus the end game is the best as an adept. The low gravity environment means the geth just float the hell away.
Biotics are so ridiculously overpowered in the first game.
ME2 tones them down a lot though - actually in ME2 I tend to roll all tech. squads more often then not (mostly because incinerate is great).
The only thing I really wish is that they'd combined AI Hacking to encompass a sabotage skill or something similar so it was useful against the organic enemies which take up most of the game. Or worked against husks...yesssss...area AI hacking husks would be god damn awesome.

Sabotoge got worked into Overload. Higher ranks will disable enemies' guns.
edit: Your complaint was about AI Hacking being limited in scope, my bad.

I've kind of envisaged Krogan females being twice the size of the males, lying ponderously on their sides like sows in mud. It... just feels so right.

you are doing them some good
Well they're supposed to be cybernetic entities, so it would make some sense. AI hacking is just so limited because you're not fighting all Geth this time round, and shotguns are not as awesome.

I feel compelled to make fanart of Tali piggy back riding on wrex while shooting a shotgun.
Since this was my original team also.
It's just a class act all around. Also great for fighting creepers and husks...mostly because it always feels so right to kill zombies and zombie-related things with shotguns.

That would conflict with my rant in the grumpy thread.
