Okay, this may have been answered in this thread already, but I just spent the last HOUR trying to register FFXIII on SE's website and just got finished putting in the game code. It bugged as I put it in, but still gave me the points. How do you get the special FFXIV stuff though?
Knowing when I will be obtaining those summons is!
On the scale of things that could be "spoilered", I'm going to go out on a limb and say "Yanno, I don't feel bad about 'ruining' that for someone." Nevermind that developers, reviewers and all manner of people commenting non-spoilery on the game have said "Hey - game really doesn't begin until 3rd disc/25 hours in!"
Yes, because you should assume that everyone here has read every single dev diary, blog, and podcast...
Very well. I apologize that you now know that somewhere in the first half of the game you fight a couple of Eidilons. Hopefully - HOPEFULLY - this knowledge doesn't ruin the actual experience of, yanno - playing the game, and not worrying about what amounts to less than 1% of relevance to the actual plot.
Oh, I love me some backhanded apologies.
And for the record, this:
telling me that summons aren't plot related
is also a fucking spoiler.
Kor, I know this is a few pages old, but would you SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY. Anyways, I'm about 4 hours in and I love the game, and I think Vanille is my favorite FF character ever.
I was shocked how much I am liking Vanille so far. I figured I would hate her as I almost always do hate the type of character. But nope. I was also pleasantly surprised by Hope. Yeah he's an emo whiny kid. He has a good damn reason for it though. And Snow isn't as bad as people made him out to be. But I guess I am bizarro poster, who is easy to please.
On another note holy shit, whoever did the uhhh, art assets for the levels in this game deserves free blowjobs for life. I just got to Palompolum forest and it is completely stunning. Which is saying something since the game has been one breath-taking vista after another.
Also, most bullshit fight so far; a random encounter that had 3 bombs and 2 clockwork guys. I got blown the hell up 3 times before the game fluked out and moved Sazh away from all but 1 of them as they self-destructed. Not even fire resist ring could save me.

I'm mostly in the same boat. Snow really really isn't as bad as some make him out to be. I mean sure he's somewhat of a fuckup, but he seems genuine and I don't mind him really. Hope has his reasons and it makes sense for a younger person to act like him. I don't mind that either.
As for Vanille, though... I'm not really disliking her and I'm not at all annoyed by her, but I just don't really get her motivation or characterization yet. I get everyone else and why they do whatever they do at any given instance, but she's just kind of there doing whatever and I don't get it.
Got done with about 4 hours of playtime and so far I love the characters. Even Hope. The only problem is I went in and messed with my paradigms and now instead of 5 star on everything I get 3 or below ugh. I will fix them tomorrow and not try to create every permutation available.
Impressions on the Characters:
Lightning: Why so angry? Damn that rap music!
Snow: RAWR! HERO! But not so bad.
Vanille: Like flowers and perfume.
Sasz: Awsome with a Chocobo + 1.
Hope: No MOM! But just a kid.

Vanille is pretty cool just for making Hope look as uncomfortable as possible.

I bought this game today. Tried to play it for three or four hours, didn't make it past the train part in the very beginning of the game, because it kept freezing up and I had to restart over and over. Finally I got to a point where it would always freeze up no matter what how many times I reloaded it. I'm going to return the disc tomorrow and see if that fixes it, but I fear my Xbox is giving up on me.
1: The maps are really really linear, as others have said. It just seems weird that they wouldn't put in at least a few more branching paths. I mean I don't mind not being able to go back to previous areas or pretty linear games or no real towns and all that, but it could use just a few more paths.
2: Even though your whole party is together for a bit you still can't choose your party for some reason.
3: Even when you have multiple people that are permanent party members you still can't choose the leader of the party.
4: No exp or anything until a few hours in.
5: No switching the party member you're controlling in battle
Other than those complaints everything is really top notch and polished to hell. And those problems are really weird because it doesn't seem like they're really because of budgets or anything, but really just deliberately obtuse design decisions... especially number 2 through 4. I really, really don't get those ones. It seems like they designed the game thinking a complete idiot was playing and they needed to force that person to learn to play everyone or something. 5 is just weird because 12 was the last one and so in that mindset I keep wanting to switch to a different member to make them do something and I can't. I can forgive 5 though I suppose.
Man, I'm loving this even more now that it's in a language I don't have to pause cutscenes to understand.
Although I feel like Vanille's VA occasionally forgets that she's supposed to be doing an accent, as I swear she jumps back and forth between standard English accent and Kiwi.
Man, there are some terrible design decisions in this game.
Not really spoiler, but could be I guess (on Chapter 6):
There is way way way too much time spent with only two characters in your party. Having way less interesting tactical options for this much of the game is pretty damn annoying. Not to mention the whole "forcing you to be a particular character" of the pair. Healing isn't very fun to be in charge of but it's awesome when automated. Thus, Vanille/Sazh is great when you're Sazh, way way way less fun when you're Vanille. Pretty much the same situation with Hope/Lightning
And for more general thoughts regarding plot and such
Hope is still a little bitch. I understand being upset at Snow for allowing his Mom to have the gun and for not being able to pull her up, but to solely blame Snow for his Mom's death is just idiotic---not only because they would have all been dead if it weren't for Snow and his crew, but you know, other people were the ones who actually killed her, ya know.
The only thing I like about him is that it appears as if it's helping Lightning self-reflect a little bit about how extreme she's been towards the whole situation
Vanille I still don't love but she's grown on me a bit, Sazh continues to be the best character in the game despite how stereotypical he is, and Snow continues to be weirdly likable. That was definitely not something I expected going in.
Open up as far as being able to choose your own party:
Chapter 10, or roughly half way through. I clocked in at 25 hours before I got access to Battle Team. Before that, you are able to choose your two squadmates that aren't Lightning, and that's around Chapter 9 iirc.
Open up as far as leveling up the Crystarium and Paradigms:
I forget when, but I believe it happens at Lake Bresha, perhaps the Vile Peaks - which is Chapters 3 and 4.

Suffice to say, you have got quite a slog to go.
Actually I'm at 3 right now, my mistake.
That's roughly 2 and a half hours, about? I'm not getting some of these complaints about the game taking 10 hours or so for the battle system to stop holding your hand. I enjoy the Giant Bombcast podcasts, but this one had the FFXIII player really complain about how the game is holding his hand and how he assumes that it'll stay that way until the last ten hours.
It is, admittedly, a bit of a slog, since by the time you hit the first "dungeon" you should have the mechanics down, but I wouldn't say it takes any longer than say, Kingdom Hearts II.

so when do you get back to consistently having three-person parties? Does that not start back until chapter 9 as well?

Played for about two hours or so tonight. Not sure how I feel. Looks amazing, and the music is fantastic. But christ, the dialogue is pained. And what's with the grunts/huffing/weird little noises everyone seems to make?
Definitely going to try to give it a proper chance. The fights seems ADHD as fuck too - I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not.
Finally, Hope is kind of obnoxious. Without too much spoilery - quick question:
Does his motivation/character go beyond "waaaaah this guy who saved everyone was tangentially related to the death of my mommy, even though we were all pretty much fucked anyway, so I'm gonna track him down and whiiiiiine!"?
Also, I'm really digging the combat system. I agree that having only 2 people in the party is a pretty big drag. I usually keep it Commando, Ravager, and the 3rd bouncing between Sabotage and Medic (at least for now, only at Odin in Chapter 4).
I'm guessing most of the people who are hating on Vanille are missing the accent and it's throwing them off. Took a little bit with her to notice it and it improved my attitude toward her greatly.
Also, right when I unlocked weapon upgrades, I bumped Lightning's 2nd weapon (+pwr -mgk) up to level 10. She's mowing everything down. Also, I'm glad she moved to being called Light, since I felt that even as far as Final Fantasy characters go, Lightning is a pretty silly name.
Anyway, I'm enjoying the game, looking forward to it opening up more after this junkyard, which is kinda stale.

Anyway, this game is purdy looking.
The huffing/grunting thing is a part of any japanese rpg or anime and has been a part of FF since voice acting was a introduced (FFX). Think of it as a general "WTF" inner thought sound previously denoted as "...".
About Hope:
He saw his mom get dropped to her death whithout hearing any of the dialogue. Plus he is a fucking kid.

Hope actually gets a bit worse later on from my experience.
And yes, he is a kid, but that he shows no regard for the fact that despite Snow failing to save his Mom (and "tricking" her into picking up the gun) is pretty ridiculous. Had Snow's crew not been there he and his Mom would both have died.
Maybe it's consistent with his character that he's totally oblivious to these facts, but it doesn't make him less annoying.

No, a bit before that. You have no control however, but at least the diversity opens up quite a bit and you have some options. I'm trying to remember when, but it happens around:
7, 8 or 9. I want to say 9 because thats when you are on a vital mission, and I do remember fighting with three people, and that shit don't happen until 9 - however there is definitely a fight before that where you have three people; my memory is just shit.
Long story short, maybe in spurts, but not officially until the part in spoiler.

With the dialogue it made me wonder if there was something lost in translation. The whole "tricking" aspect of the dialogue. I just wrote it off as a kid making excuses to deal with fact his mom died in front of his eyes and laying the blame on the easiest target.
Edit: As for the whole not picking group members aspect I think they do a good job of showing why you cannot do that so far. For instance having two of the characters indesposed for a particular reason in the cutscene before the fight/sub-chapter ensues.
I agree that they at least satisfy the limitations narratively - my complaint is pretty much: "Jesus enough already, lets get some resolution!" Something tells me Square thought "Oh shit, look at all this space we can play with, and decided to pad the story with as much "gee whiz" as they could. I suppose the choices that limit your party make sense from a storyline standpoint, but god damn from a gameplay standpoint over 20 hours of it is just too much.

Edit: And the same for all those "LOL 360 VERSION LOOKS SO BAD" Bullshit, I havent seen any artifacts or whatever, it looks gorgeus, and most of the single comparison pictures are tampered with.
(They really overdid it in some of them, its obvious that its been altered at times) I hope the guys who did those die in a fire, for trying to make me believe that it looked like that.
i am seriously loving this game so far. it is fast. it is excting. the characters are diverse enough. the music is wonderful and the cinematics make my eyes happy.
I am only an hour or so in but here is a question
what is the point of my score? I am trying to kill monsters really fast to increase my score but then I realize. . uh. .nothing happens.

The battle system is so fast paced, easily the fastest paced battle system in a Final Fantasy game. I really enjoy it. It feels more like an action RPG regardless of being menu-driven, which is surprising.
I actually find myself agreeing with a lot of what was written in the edge review, he's not wrong about most of what he's said.
Still enjoying the game, my main grievance so far is being constantly forced into groups of two party members. I keep thinking surely there'll be some character development that never really seems to come. in each segment the two characters will exchange maybe 2-3 lines of dialogue. Some of these sequences seem contrived to me as well for example sazh and vaniles sojourn through a factory was brought on by abandoning lightning and hope for no real reason.

Though, it's hard to say which character is better. Vanille and Flonne are both very good characters in their respective role.
