I am assuming it was a case of skimming or some similar type of fraud. I am still in possession of the card, but it was used to buy some $texas airline tickets from Travelocity.
I already called Visa and they have canceled the card, but I need to go to my bank tomorrow to get all my dolla dolla bills back.
What fresh hell should I expect? What information do I need to bring (outside of the ordinary)?
I only used the card in TWO places for an entire week, so I am thinking that pretty much narrows it down. One was at an ATM in Louisiana and another at a restaurant in Florida. What sort of action do I need to take, if any, to bring this asshole to justice... or will Visa pretty much take care of that?
You don't do anything. VISA investigates the fraud with LEOs. You get your money back and told to stay out of the way of the investigation. They'll be able to pull up your activity and go from there themselves.
Info to bring? Call the bank and ask what you should bring. Different institutions have different policies.
My mom worked at a bank for a while. I know you'll (at least at her bank, this was normal) have to fill out a subpoena basically swearing that it really wasn't you, honest. Depending on how much it was, I don't think they gave people a hell of a lot of trouble about this stuff. I know they'd just eat it quite often in these situations.
They do basically all the work, along with Visa. That ATM in Louisiana probably captured some footage of the guy.
Then again, if you go to some huge bank like Wells Fargo, they might give you more shit about this.

He used the ATM... could have been a skimmer installed on the ATM, or the wait staff at the restaurant stealing the card info. Or something from a few weeks prior, but he's got the time frame down pretty well I'd wager.
I just went to the bank, and explained what happened. They had me fill out paperwork to cancel my card and re-issue a new one, and paperwork to investigate what happened. (I provided as much information about the transaction as I could)
The issued a reimbursement within a couple of days pending the result of the investigation. After a couple of weeks I got a letter from them explaining that my info hadn't been stolen, it was just an error in processing the transaction. It came out of my account instead of the intended account.
Either way, the old card was dead, I had a shiny new one, and my money back.

As a general security pointer, I advise people to avoid using an ATM card as a credit card whenever you can. If someone steals your (actual) credit card, you don't pay the disputed result, but if someone gets your debit card, the money is gone from your account until the bank fixes it.
