Back in school, our reading textbooks consisted of excerpts from books, so we could read a lot of different things and maybe get interested in picking up some books to read the whole story.
Anyway, there was one excerpt we read that I've been trying to find the complete version of, but I do not remember the title. (Hopeless, huh?)
The gist of the story is that it's the future and the government has enacted laws to make every person equal in every way. They do this by handicapping people in some shape or form. Strong people must have weights attached to their person at all times. People with good eyesight have to wear glasses to make their vision worse. Great thinkers are required to wear an earpiece that emits a shrill noise at random to keep them from thinking about anything for long periods of time, etc...
The excerpt is about a couple sitting at home watching the news when someone breaks into the TV station and takes over the studio. He goes through shedding all of his handicaps on TV and begging for people to rise against the government and revolt. I think he actually gets killed by the police during the process.
I had thought it might be 1984, so I picked it up, but it wasn't, although it was really good, too.
Anyone have any ideas?

I'd recommend just reading some Vonnegut in general, if you were hoping to get a long read out of it. You can't go wrong with anything he's written.
You did! It's from a collection called Welcome to the Monkey House.
