That Kevin Butler ad for Move is weird. We can't buy it, and it's too long. Also, it specifically attacks a "competing" product, which isn't what they normally do.
Lots of companies do that when they are producing a game but it is still too far away to decide on a name.
Yeah, but what I'm thinking of was a big announcement that listed off the names up upcoming must have PS3 games. MAG, Uncharted 2, ACTION GAME, GoD3...
MAG was the game you are thinking of. It was just called Massive Action Game, and everyone laughed at the title.
Eh. I don't think so still. I considered that when I made that post but I'm pretty sure it was even more generic than Massive Action Game.
I'll have to give it a rest until I can actually prove anything though and since I probably won't dive deep into the GAF archives we can assume I'm terribly wrong.

I think their jab at Natal pretty much sums up their incompetence.
"No one wants to pretend their hand is a gun."
Yeah... And those guys you are definitely referencing most likely don't want to pretend a glowing disco ball is a gun either. Nor do they really care to pretend that a white plastic IR remote is a gun. If they did then that type of software would sell gangbusters on the Wii. Those gamers tend to prefer a game pad.
Sony thinks they can just tack motion control onto Resistance 3 and call it a day.

The only other game I can think of is the new Rockstar North game Agent, which was announced at the same time.
Between major successes like Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2, BioWare has quickly become one of the most important studios throughout all of Electronic Arts since the publisher acquired the RPG specialists. EA has already indicated that the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO is the "largest ever development project, period, in the history of the company,” and it's quite clear that expectations for this title are huge.
Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia recently came away from a meeting with EA and reported that although "earnings are somewhat depressed due to ongoing expenses of the Star Wars MMO, management has high hopes for this and believes 2M+ subs is possible." He added that a little over 1 million subscribers is needed to reach the break-even point, but the ultimate goal is to get several million subscribers.
Apart from Star Wars, Bhatia also said that EA indicated good momentum for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, which "appears to be tracking well above expectations and combined with Mass Effect 2 and Dante’s Inferno could drive upside in the quarter."
I know DICE curried a lot of good favor after the whole "no dedicated servers" thing with a direct comment about how they'll always have dedicated servers because it's the right thing to do by the players

It will make it all the more hilarious if they decide to stop allowing dedicated servers in one of their games.
In advertising news, Sony found a way to get all the idiots who keep on asking them stupid crap to post it in one place so Sony can ignore them. Well, except for Kevin Butler hosting the E3 press conference. That needs to happen.

Kevin Butler hosting the E3 show would make me watch it live. But they'll need a lot of good material for him to work with.
There are quite a few other developers that have fantastic records too, where's their 10+ 15 page threads?
All over the place if you look for them.
Most of those threads are just the most recent in a long series of threads too. I mean, TF2 alone probably has as many threads in it's lifetime as any two bioware games.
It's not difficult to guess why this particular poster willfully chose to omit so many publishers when making that silly statement.
Awesome, nothing like a good personal attack, huh? Because Sheep sure isn't biased, nope, he just takes any criticism of Microsoft as a personal insult. Natal? It's going to have a killer app, mark Sheep's words!
I own Mass Effect 1+2, Dragon Age and most of Bioware's other games, you goose. It has absolutely nothing to do with any bias, just an observation that Mass Effect has had an absurd amount of threads. Use your brain.
Anyway, there's no way Star Wars: The Old Republic won't get more than 1 million subscribers, FFXI still has 2 million subscribers 7 years after its release. It's a pretty vague figure though, how long will those million subscribers have to subscribe for EA/Bioware to break even?

Typo. I actually meant '10+ 100 page threads'.
The thing is though, most of what goes on in the Mass Effect thread is barely related to Mass Effect. They're basically G&T's version of [chat] threads with a slight Mass Effect flavour. Most of it is random talking or talking about asari genitalia.

Nah, the asari discussion went pretty fast actually. We all kinda agreed it must have something to do with the tentacles on their heads.

This could end hilariously.
Yes it could, Bioware Austin is a brand new studio, it could be as dysfunctional as all of the other ready made studios by suits.
The thing is though, most of what goes on in the Mass Effect thread is barely related to Mass Effect. They're basically G&T's version of [chat] threads with a slight Mass Effect flavour. Most of it is random talking or talking about asari genitalia.
I have a lot of faith in Bioware, but one million just to break even?
If I was a suit at EA, I would have just decided to make Kotor 3 instead. Safer gamble.
I mean I really really hope TOR ends up being the WoW-killer, but I wouldn't be willing to put the financial health of my company down on that bet. Regardless of who was making it.

what's that
the TF2 thread has some competition?
Of course not, it doesn't have 2 posts in the rules specifically telling people to stop being silly geese in it.
And I was going to make a point the board's taste, that even a relatively popular and soon-to-come-out game like Splinter cell conviction hadn't even been mentioned much this whole month, including not a single post about the demo in the week since the news broke, but tofu just bumped the thread.
Of course, even with the rampant love-on of Avellone and Obsidian among older cRPG fans, this is the only forum I've seen that actually seems relatively hyped about Alpha Protocol, and definitely the only one able to sustain a conversation about it for more than a couple pages/hours, much less almost 90 pages.
I'm definitely interested in TOR, but I doubt that I'll play for more than a few months. I'm kind of sceptical how well the SP RPG style questing will translate to continued subscriptions.
Maybe the Mass Effect 2 thread is popular because it's an awesome game that lots of people are playing and most of those people like it.
Yeah, I know, it doesn't seem very likely.
Who said it wasn't? I was just pointing out that there's a disproportionate amount of people here that clearly love Bioware games compared to a lot of other series. Hence why Mass Effect 1 (a decent game but not spectacular) somehow found itself in the games of the decade poll top 10.

Eh, I've seen a few other places that still have a hard-on for Avellone. There's usually a few hangers-on that think it's their job to discredit him as well. Personally I think he's one of the best game designers/writers in the industry, I just wish he wasn't handicapped by Obsidian's poor art/programming (not that other western RPG's are great in those fields either, Bethesda clearly being the worst).
As for the Splinter Cell thread, that's probably what 3 years in the wilderness will do to the hype. I'm sure it'll pick up a lot from now on, similar to what happened with Heavy Rain.

Yeah, I'll be getting Splinter Cell day 1, but the delays (especially the one which moved it from Febuary to April) pretty much drained my pre-release hype.

If Bioware dies because of that MMO not selling well I will probably cry for days.
If Bioware dies because of that MMO not selling well I will probably cry for days.
Uh, first off Bioware are owned by EA and they're not going to kill one of their most profitable studios after one failure nor are EA suddenly going to die (worst case scenario, they're bought out by someone like Disney).
Secondly, last year Square Enix reported that there were still 2 million subscribers for Final Fantasy XI. Two million, seven years after release. I've no doubts Old Republic will do quite well, even if it's nowhere near as good as they're hyping it up to be.
I love a good lolsony as much as the next guy, but even I admit that these Kevin Butler ads are solid gold. Note the not-so-subtle jab at Natal about a minute in.
Also note the framed picture of Tretton next to the PS3!
Sony needs to pay their advertising people whatever they have to, to keep them on.
I don't doubt that they'll be able to sell a million boxes if it looks fairly decent, but retaining them is always the hard part.
but if I were investing in video games MMO's is not where I'd put my money. The presence of already existing games, plus the huge influx of F2P MMO's mean that this is a tough space right now.

They didn't specify for how long they'd need to keep that number of subscribers, but yes I don't think one or two million will be a problem. It'll probably sell more than that on its name alone.

And then clone them for the UK.
They really are fantastic. I'm glad they moved away from weeping babies and exploding Rubix cubes.

Well, yeah, I have no intention of getting Move. That's what the Wii is for. But still, Kevin Butler, mmmmm.

I'm beginning to think it's the whole reason they made Natal.
I like this ad
It's well-made
Doesn't have a goddamn thing to do with the 360 though
But yeah, the more and more I see of Move, the more I just feel it's going to be an awful venture, like Home was
The one advantage it has over the Wii? Don't have to use it.
It will make it all the more hilarious if they decide to stop allowing dedicated servers in one of their games.
