Honestly, it is pretty weird to make a new friend with the same attitude you would have when test driving cars at a dealership.
That would basically be my response. "Why are you the right guy for this?" "Look, I saw the PATV the other day. You said you're basically hiring a friend. That feels super weird from the other side."
You know what, though? I think my response if I were asked "Why do you want to to work at Penny Arcade?" would simply be "You call 'ballyhoo', and I answer."

In a small workplace it is extremely important that everyone gets along well. We have the same attitude in bringing on mod staff. Small groups are fragile ecosystems and you need to be very careful in bringing new people in.

I get the feeling that if they hired a black person, there'd be a chilling effect in the PA offices. I mean, these are the same guys who won't draw black people in their comic for fear of being racist. What would they do if they had to interact with that which they do not necessarily understand on a daily basis?
hah - honestly, what it comes down to is that there just aren't a lot of black people in Seattle/the northwest. We just started opening up our job searches to all locations though, and I'd personally love to bring some more diversity to this place. Last year we did get Khahil over at Reed hired to help us plan PAX (he was originally an enforcer).
But come to think of it, before we started making it a more public process, we would hire people we knew in the industry... my game industry contact list is about 4,000 folks, and I can honestly say that the number of non-asian minorities i know in the industry are pretty slim.
Khoo, would you guys ever consider hiring someone if their current employer suddenly implodes and they are without a job along with like 100 of their colleagues?
This episode really spooked me. So tense! So much on the line!
I actually did a double take when I saw the thread's poll before this week's PATV. "What? Lexxy? From AC? No way! How many other Lexx(ies?) could there be though...?" I followed the PA battle tournaments even after they went off site. For a while anyways... not even sure if they're still running those. Always loved em' and admired those who took part.
Did anyone else find it odd though that Lexxy stuck as her name? I didn't really expect everyone from PA to use her forum name like a real nick-name. Is that what she prefers to go by?
On the other hand, I was kind of disappointed they didn't have a bit more sympathy for Matt, especially given Mike's own struggles with anxiety in the past (which he has bravely been so open about on the front page). It doesn't seem fair that he might miss out for not possessing the confidence and charisma that Mike and Jerry maybe didn't have when they first started Penny Arcade.
And yet, empathy alone isn't a good reason to hire someone, and there are two other great candidates who DO have confidence, so... ugh. I just hope that at the very least they'll let Matt down extra-gently if they don't hire him.
I agree. They did seem like they wanted to give him a chance though, and acknowledged what might potentially be the issue (seeming lack of confidence due to nerves). Other places might have written him off entirely but they at least give the impression that they are trying.
I do wonder what a proper response to "hey, you, shove this recycling up your ass" is. Only soft plastics?
Also, totally used to think that the only reasons I'd be unqualified for a PA position were all the requirements on that job listing they posted a while back. Now I can add a few more to that imaginary list.
Although I do wonder, since you have to sort of become a "friend" with these people at the PA offices, how much fakery and oppression of self, at least at first, is required to work there? It's mentioned that the strategy of coming on strong in your short three day interview process is off putting, but being timid is also not desired as well. You sort of have to be perhaps a more concentrated version of yourself because they only have so much time with which to judge you. But even the new hire might have to sort of merge their personality with what is "expected" of them from PA. Like, you have a concert to go to or you can play D and D with your boss...It's understandable that you'll have to do what you need to do rather than what you might want.
To people complaining that the interview was just a "popularity contest" or whatever. What the hell do you think a job interview is?
I've had plenty of boring corporate jobs, and if they don't think you can DO the job, you don't even get the phone interview. And if they don't LIKE you based on the phone, you don't get an in person interview. And if you don't think you'd be a good fit, a good person to work with, good with your team mates... you don't get the job.
I've been on both sides of the interview desk several times over the years. And yes, you ask some technical questions (obviously in this case, their creative ability was vetted prior to them coming to the office) but then you just think "Is this person going to fit in? Am I going to want to work with this person? Are they going to suck to be around? How will they work with the team/environment here?"
So yeah... a job interview is mainly a popularity contest.

So why haven't you made Skull Man a mod?
By gum, structural unemployment gets my crickets in a crumpet!
Yeah, I feel bad for Matt. I'd totally do the same thing.

it really is about who you can shove the most recycling in to the rectal cavity of
I mean, DAMN.
Also, who is more racist, the person telling the joke, or all of you for laughing at it? AND WHERE ARE ALL THE BLACK PEOPLE AT PENNY ARCADE?
edit: I wonder if the poll winner gets the consolatory prize, like PA janitor or something.

Just a hypothetical situation.
Along with more PATV, I hope.

It's also a bit of a popular porn name.
I assume you figured this out while Googling for her?
I did see her resume on her website, though. Impressive. She could be their TGS liaison.

These are so good. I can't believe I didn't know about them before.
Or, "Who recycles?"
Or, "Do I look like Captain Planet? The power is yours to go fuck yourself!"
