Hey guys, you probably get this alot in H&A but here goes:
I need to fix a laptop which has reportedly gotten really slow and locks up with too many browsers open (this is all I know currently). So I need to know what are the best spyware/virus detection and removal tools to use that are free and not too difficult to obtain. Obviously this may not fix the problem (could be hardware failing or any number of problems) but its worth a shot. Alternatively I'll just end up reformatting if theyre willing.
So, thanks in advance for any advice!
I'd construct a situation such that everyone died at the exact same moment so that we could attack whatever afterlife there happens to be en masse and so take it over and create a perfect unending afterlife existence. Also, everyone who wanted one would have an afterlife pony.

Microsoft Security Essentials, Spybot Search&Destroy (but don't install teatimer), SUPERAntiSpyware.
Also check how many programs run at startup, maybe they've just got too many extraneous programs installed.

I went through something recently. I found Avast!, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and Spybot eventually cleaned it all up. Though I had to run Spybot after booting in safe mode because it kept getting hung up on one process.
It is a very light utility that will allow you to clean up the registry, clean up and delete temporary files. As well as manage programs on start up and is easier then the Microsoft utility to remove any unneeded programs. Also it is free.
Additionally the same company that produced CCleaner produced a Defrag utility that is also free and works very well. Defraggler
Finally Threatfire is a good program to run in the back ground to help stop malicious programs from executing or downloading, its not perfect but an extra layer of dynamic protection works well.
How well-backed-up is the data? Could you wipe the drive and go with a fresh OS install?
Considering the people in question call Windows XP "Microsoft" I imagine they dont have anything backed up. A clean wipe is a possibility though if things dont work out. I'll be working on it today so if I have any questions I'll be bumping this thread again.
Oh, and thanks guys - really appreciate the input!

Windows firewall is fine. There's nothing wrong with windows firewall if your computer is fully updated and patched.
