On one hand, those are some ugly screens, but on the other, perhaps more people's computers will be able to run it...I know I'm sick of playing catch up with developer's hardware.
I'm a fucking enormous whore for Monster Hunter, especially considering I've never played a game in the series, but meh, I'm lazy, I'd still rather simply import Dos (which is never going to be localized, at this rate).
HOLY SHIT. I am excited. I didn't even read the first post outside of the title.
EDIT:
OK, that looks like monster hunter 2 for pc. MMO? Not really. Imagine phantasy star online but not... completely shitty? A lot of people couldn't get into MH, so I would be optimistic to say that MH2 is only "partially shitty" for those people.
My only experience with Monster Hunter is Freedom for the PSP. It was OK, but the controls and camera were pretty bad. It just felt really clunky. The weapon and armor upgrade/crafting system was pretty cool, though.
I'd rather have the PS2 version of Dos really, but if it actually comes out in the states, I'll definitely get it as long as they keep the online play free.

At this rate, I'd pay for online. I really, really want Dos. It's more of a need, really.
I have the ps2 version of DOS. I got really frustrated with it because it got so damn difficult to combine materials and complete quests without knowing any bit of the japanese language at all. All I could recognize was the colored icons next to items.
I killed a few big monsters, made a bow, sns and a full armor set of the giant crab, then got frustrated and lost the energy to keep going.

I'm rather curious at what drives your want for this game seeing as you admitted you hadn't played One or Freedom.
More like PSO but set in the jurassic period, dinosaurs and dragons run around, you hunt them, then craft huge weapons and armor for yourself to hunt more of them.

The games look insanely appealing to me. I've watched a decent amount of high level gameplay on youtube, and looked into the game, and it looks extremely awesome to me.

i love the concept of these games sooooooooo much.
i really hope this hits stateside, i'd be so down.
That would get me to buy a 360. But I hope not, because I'm buying a PS3 for MH3. I at least hope that they'll make MH2DOS (if they do) and MH3 for the same system.

Even though the sequels are vastly improved, it wouldn't hurt to hunt down the first version for PS2 at least. Should be at least 20 bucks by now if not less and the servers are still up and active.

Yeah, I keep meaning to, but either forget or decide to wait for Dos. I really should just buy it though, it couldn't hurt.
While browsing some Japanese sites, I came across some more information about the actual announcement at the Tokyo Game Show this year. Here is the following translation I have put together:
4Gamer.net
"The PC edition of the popular "Monster Hunter" series was announced at Tokyo game Show 2006 entitled "Monster Hunter Frontier Online". A featured screening of the game showed a new town where a large multitude of hunters can gather, the promotion movie also introduced a new Advanced Capability Guild System, Ranking System, and Gallery.
Originally, Monster Hunter is an RPG for the Sony game consoles such as the PS2 and PSP where the player becomes "the hunter", hunts the monster, sets traps and/or suppresses the monster. Then they skin and carve up the monster and process the material they earn into equipment. It was very much an MMORPG even on the console, but with Monster Hunter Frontier the game is officially becoming an MMORPG. They have opened up the official site already but have not released any predetermined release dates.
They intend to use Monster Hunter 2 as an expansion base, implementing a guild system, a community lobby, and a new gallery system. They are even adding a new element called a Ranking System which is somewhat different than the Hunter Rank system already implemented in MH2. They have also announced the inclusion of new fields, new monsters, weapons, armor, etc.
According to to Yosinori, the head of online business generalization and online development department manager of Capcom, he says that Monster Hunter Frontier will only be for the PC and a console edition is not possible. On the plus side, there have listed several bonus to porting Monster Hunter to the PC, including: high resolution, new quests, patches, and events can all be downloaded quickly and easily and with no extra cost to the customers. Although the PC specifications have not yet been revealed, Capcom assures. "We have seriously considered the gaming community and in order for the hardware not to become a hurdle for gameplay, we would like to keep the overall graphics simple and low."
The Closed Beta test is also a matter of concern for Capcom, they have already scheduled it for winter 2006. Furthermore, they've already released special Beta Leaflets to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd fans already lined up and waiting to play. It turns out that the rumor of a special gift for all MHP2nd players was indeed an invitation into the participation of the MHF Beta. So if you intend on visiting the Tokyo Game Show before it ends, be sure to add Monster Hunter Portable 2nd on your to-do list. "
Only while starting out. Once you start getting some better equipment and items and know what you're up against, it gets a hell of a lot easier.
Until we get to the dragon fights. Jesus Christ.
There definately is a tough learning curve. One of the best things about the game I think.
If you ever have any problems with the offline portion, you can jump online and have others help you on tough quests so you can get materials to make better equipment than you can make offline, then bring those online equipment offline to help you.

I scored the first for $5 in a CC clearance bin, never opened it however, I was sort of hoping I'd have some company for the online portions to help me out, seems like a cool premise, bigass weapons and trapping huge dragons with some chums.
I hear its actually less cool than that, with a lot of hunting rare mushrooms to build a magic charm and that kind of shit. Its still a couple games away from being played through in the backlog but if we could assemble a party, I'd love the help.
Yeah. There's a few fetch quests in there but only 4 of those missions are tedious: the two egg stealing missions and the two missions where you have to gather the rare ore without dropping it
Other than that, they're pretty straight forward and quick and provide opportunities to gather materials

I'd buy this if it came to the U.S.

Freedom sold pretty decently in the US, the demand for Dos is there, but Capcom doesn't seem to give a shit. There is money to be made, Capcom. Money.
