Famitsu and DS sitting in a tree......

edited January 2007 in Games and Technology
Actually this is not just about the DS really - i just picked up the newest Famitsu and I thought I'd practise my Nihon-GO! by putting some of it here.

Unfortunately I don't have a scanner, so no screenshots, just your imagination - won't that be inspiring!

Apparently the FF13 titles are united under the group name 'Fabula Nova Crystallis' - FF13, FF vs 13, and FF Agito 13. There are some exclusive concept screens for FF Agito 13, the cellphone game. The screenies are lovely, and the backstory has you as students of the Peristelleum Magic Academy (which has a Hogwarts-meets-Lyra's-Oxford feeling, from the concept art), fighting enemies from another world/dimension.

The FF13 article has some references to other games (Shiva etc), and the FF vs 13 article has some FF7-ish cyberpunk+magic screens.

There is quite a lot about FF12 Revenant Wings, with some very pretty screens (with particle-y effects etc). The bottom of the screen has Magic/Skill, Gambit and Mist Knack along it, so it looks very stylus-friendly. There are 'powerful' summons from FF12 (Belias and Cuchulainn) along with summonable monsters (chocobo, cactaurs etc) which can fight alongside your party.

In other news, the top-selling games in Japan 2006 are listed. 17!!! of the top 20 are DS titles, with Pokemon Diamond & Pearl as No.1 with 4,302,815 sales. FF3 is at No.5 with a respectable 2,322,329 sales. (sorry, but I'm a bit FF-obsessed at the moment. As is every other bugger in Japan it seems).

There are 3 PS2 titles in this DS-heavy chart - Winning Eleven 10 at No.9, Monster Hunter 2 at No.19, and Sengoku Musou at No. 20.

As for this weeks sales - No.1 is Dragon Quest Monsters Joker, with Pokemon Dia/Prl at No.2

Newsishness:

There is an update for Culdcept Saga being released. it will be released in January.

Wii Healthpack is being touted as it's 'killer app', as Nintendogs and Brain Training were for the DS.

There are also previews of Monster Hunter Frontier for the PC. Baroque (lovely-looking PS2 RPG), Fire Emblem Dawn Goddess (quite plain graphics, but then that's hardly the point with Fire Emblem), Mario Party 8 (Wii), Yoshi's Island DS, Tales of Destiny 2 (PSP), Heroes of Mana (DS, seems a lot simpler than FF12 RW or FF CC), Sangokushi Taisen (DS), Virtua Fighter 5 (PS3), Persona 3 Fes (Face?) and much more.

I'm not really up on all the game news, so I apologise if some of this is on lots of news sites. Of course, if you're all rabid about some J-game (those mentioned and those not), just ask and I'll see what news there is.

I figure I could take a bear.

Some kind of keep-fit game, possibly with a mat-type controller included, according to the mag.

I really wish I was more up on machines/games that I don't play. To be honest, I have no idea of the big upcoming 360/PS3/Wii games, so I don't know which articles etc to mention/translate. I have a DS and PS2, so that's all I know.

I wish I had a scanner. FF12 RW is sooo pretty. And the PS3 FF13 screens are interesting.

My wife is sitting in the corner muttering 'geek, geek, geek' under her breath. Must go punch her in the spleen.

The recipe thingie is No.17 in this week's sales chart. Higher than, for example, Pokemon Battle Revolution. Or Twilight Princess!

Jeez. This week 98000 people bought the DS recipe cart and only 79000 bought TP!

I don't even own a Wii, but those recipes better be some kind of chicken-fried manna.

Also, in regards to the health game, I have two thoughts:

    1) Does anybody else remember the game with the... exercise bike peripheral or something, for the Genesis? Or maybe it was just that it monitored your heartrate and stuff while you were supposed to be biking. I dunno. I remember seeing it in Sega Visions when I was a kid.
    2) Don't we already have a game people buy for health reasons? Dance Dance Revolution? :P

I remember reading about the exercise bike thing, although I've never actually seen one outside of a magazine.

As for playing DDR for the sake of one's health, while it's an improvement over sitting on the couch, it's still not much of a workout.

Top 20 games of 2006 (By sales, not votes or somesuch)

    in order:

    Pocket Monster Diamond and Pearl
    New Super Mario Brothers
    New Brain Training
Oideyo Doubutsu no Mori (is that Animal Crossing?)
    Final Fantasy 12
    Brain Training
    English Training
    Mario Kart DS
    Winning Eleven 10
    Tetris DS
    Final Fantasy 3
    Adult Japanese Training
Cool Witches Love and Berry DS Collection
    Tamagotchi Little Shop
    Hoshi no Kirby
    Talk! DS Cooking
    Pokemon Ranger
    Dragon Quest Monster Joker
    Monster Hunter 2
    Sengoku Musou 2

God, you can see why they decided to release DQ9 on the DS.

    The other consoles:
    Highest PS2 game was FF12 at No.5
Highest Wii game was Wii Sports at No.21
Highest PSP game was Monster Hunter Portable at No.30
Highest GBA game was Mother 3 at No.36

There were no PS3 or 360 games in the Top 100 - Ridge Racer 7 and Blue Dragon were their best, but nothing made the chart. That makes sense for the ultra-new PS3, but not for the 360.

The Evangelion game is Meitantei Evangelion. I couldn't be arsed to see if a North American version had an official name, so I just decided on a literal translation. As far as I know Meitantei is a legendary detective, like Sherlock Holmes.

'Adult Japanese Training' is a crappy translation, sorry. I should have said 'Common Sense Training'. Or 'embarassingly-obvious-because-every-adult-should-know Common Sense Training'.

    Here is the full name.

Actual Adult Japanese Training is done by Russian whores in Kabukicho

Ah Mario DS is a surprise? Didn't know that

    Kaitou Wario The Seven

    Here's the official site

    http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/awaj/index.html

Click on the big that mentions TV-CM for a link.

Kaitou is something like 'sneak thief'. It's the same word they use for Lupin III, I think (don't know anime much).

Actually, for all I know, more of this stuff is news in America.

For example, is the backstory for FF13 released in English?
