So, this is not really related to steam, but steam sells the game and so I figure it's somewhat relevant and I'm likely to get an answer here.
I bought Bioshock (1) last September during a D2D sale, and after the first several hours I got kinda tired of it. I'm disappointed because the game is such a slog. I'm constantly scrounging for ammo and money, and fighting Big Daddies is often a pain-in-the-ass war of attrition that eventually ends with me killing them, but not before I've died 2 times or exhausted 75-90% of my ammo reserves.
And while I'm enjoying the atmosphere, I seem to be stuck in a vicious cycle: I am forced to kill splicers with ammo because my wrench is fairly ineffective, the splicers yield little to no money or ammo, so when I finally do meet something like a Big Daddy I'm forced to expend whatever reserves I have left, which means whatever money I find goes to restocking guns and medkits, and then the problem starts all over.
Basically, I'm just wondering if I'm doing it wrong.
You're just at the beginning of the power curve. By the end you'll be slaughtering big daddies without even a minor risk of death.
Also, make sure to use anti personal ammo against splicers and armor piercing against big daddies. And IIRC, in the first game you can come back to an area later when you're more powerful. Also, with the right amount of gene tonics, you can become a god with the wrench. (Also also, don't forget about the one-two punch. It's super-effective against splicers.)
Also, depending on where you are in the game, there's an camera which you can use to take pictures of enemies; the more pictures you take of an enemy type, the more damage you'll do against them. (As well as getting special abilities and whatnot.) Cameras, Turrets, Sentry Bots, both kinds of Big Daddies (Bouncer and Rosies) and little sisters also give extra damage/bonuses for filming them as well.
Take lots of pictures! And make sure to film everything until you've fully researched them.
The way it is with Bioshock 1 and 2, is that eventually you end up with ammo coming out of every orifice if you search everything. Shouldn't take more than a few hours into the game to get to that point on normal, maybe a bit longer on hard.

To give you a sense of where I am, I'm past the
part where Andrew Ryan blows up the sub. Now I'm currently hunting for some sort of tree sample so the damn things don't all die from some toxin being pumped into the air.
Playing on normal. So I feel like I should be nearing this point of tons of ammo and money, but not entirely sure what I'm doing wrong. I certainly feel like I've been scouring everything--I've developed good habits via CRPGs--but something is missing.

You're doing fine, and you are close to reaching that point. Keep playing.
For what it's worth, I heard that it was recently patched to fix some of the shadow problems and be less of annoying with the useless Social Club add on, but I can't confirm whether or not it actually helped.
It seemed to work fine for me a few months ago, but I recently upgraded my computer.
(After holding on to my old one for five years that is, I don't mean that as one of those "WHY ISN'T EVERYONE RICH AND USING A TOP OF THE LINE PC" comments.)
The new patch seems to have helped quite a bit, but that might have been because it reset my graphics settings. :?

As has been mentioned, the camera is key to cracking the game wide open. To explain - try and take a photo of every non-friendly 'entity' you come across (this also applies to things like neutral big daddies and little sisters, cameras and turrets). You get bonus points for having them doing something interesting like attack you, and having multiple subjects (including corpses) in frame, and get less points if you've photgraphed them before. Film is cheap, so take every opportunity you can. You'll actually get some really good bonus plasmids from this that make wrench-only a completely legitimate way to play the game.
Invest Adam in equipping you with as many slots for powers and stat boosts as you can - there's a lot of useful things you can find to put in them. Worth mentioning are Eve Saver (costs 1 Adam and reduces the amount of Eve you use with each power), Armored Shell (reduces all damage taken) and Hacker's Delight (gives you both health and Eve every time you hack something).
Speaking of which - hack everything. Every camera, turret, health station, safe. You'll get some health and Eve from each with Hacker's Delight, and make each location totally hostile to splicers - cameras in particular will send out bots to kill splicers before you've even seen them.
Can anyone proffer an opinion on Men of War Red Tide?
If you played and enjoyed the first Men of War, it's obviously worth getting. If you're just getting into the series it's a toss-up - both MoW games are really really hard (being expansions to Faces of War), with slightly more focus on massive battles for the first and slightly more focus on squad-based stuff for the second. The demos aren't that helpful to get an idea of your experience with the games, as they disable saving - and you'll be saving a lot! Detailed impressions are here.

Anyone on here have opinions of Beat Hazard? Or did I miss it a few pages back?
Check a few pages back, there's plenty. Suffice to say that I say just say no. Say.
I'm going to get it, but not until it gets a big sale. Audiosurf has had a few sales where it hit $2.50, so I figure that'll happen with Beat Hazard too.

10 bucks is too expensive? This isn't a personal attack; I just know that personally anything below $20 tends to disconnect my brain from my left click finger.
I played it again last night. I'm really enjoying the game and slowly starting to metagame it.
Again, I curse the Steam News popup. Bought Trine on the way out of my computer last night. I'm going to pick up Plain Sight later this week and give it a shot.

Nah, $10 is pretty cheap. But when I know it'll probably be cheaper in the future at some point, and when I have plenty of games to play already, I am fine with waiting. Basically, I've learned to hold back on my impulse buys because it's happened a few times where I bought a game for a cheap price, ended up not playing it, and witnessed the price drop even lower. Since the game has had mixed reviews, I feel better about holding back on my purchase.

There's currently a offer for Trine on Steam EU and I'd like to know wether you can play the game co-op over the internet or not. It seems that you need a second controller to play multiplayer, which indicates that it's only hotseat. Can anybody answer this?

It's hotseat only. But honestly I think the game is better single player.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
Picked up Beat Hazard and loving it. I know some people here didn't like how softer/slower music makes for harder difficulty, but I enjoy it. The whole point of having thrash metal music double bass pedal be your death cannon and having to slowly rely on the short intense bursts from softer acoustic guitar songs is fun. Music is the ship's power source so it only makes sense. If you know the more intense parts of the songs you can tell when to start engaging and when not. Maybe I just like to play "dodge all the shit on the screen without firing" metagame.

Also 2112 by Rush is amazing on this. That is all.
So it looks like Macbeta emails were sent out. Thanks to this thread for getting me the news. 8-)
Time to start compulsively checking my email.
I signed up with a MacBook Pro, so I don't know if they care about people like me though.
Edit: Just saw Deus Ex GOTY for $2.50. I've heard so much about the game that I'm pulling the trigger, for that price.

I like how Steam nicely keeps explicit track of how much time I've spent in Steam games the last two weeks. No biggie, just 55 hours. It's like a second god damn job.

Hotseat implies you are passing a controller back and forth, taking turns.
I think local coop is a more appropriate term. My girlfriend can pull up a chair and attach another 360 controller and we both play at the same time.

Loving the game myself, its addictive. I think my favorite so far to play in Beat Hazard is Nightwish songs, Planet Hell was a lot of fun and old Metallica is pretty awesome too.
Nothing like a wave of attack ships or a boss right as a guitar solo swells.
Finally steam, you take my money again with a decent sale. Gotta pull the trigger on Deus Ex, even though I still have the original CDs at $5 i just cant say no.
Now if you could put half life 1 + the orange box on sale so i could buy those too, that would be great.

All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Yeah just keep going, the time will come.

P.S. Out of curiosity anything else in the NDA besides screenshots?

Actually, you really should change that, and verify it too. Makes it much harder for your account to get jacked.
I don't see the option on the Steam website.
