It was me! I was thinking the same thing about cutting the buttons out but I haven't had the balls to do it yet. I've also gotten used to finding the volume buttons by feeling for the orientation lock switch.

Well then you, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. I appreciate the recommendation. I love it.

I'll let you know if I ever cut some holes out.

I was also thinking I could make my own skins by just printing something out and tucking it between the back and the case. Yeah, it'll be a little dark because of the smoke color but it might be kinda cool.

it seems to me he was implying that an open app store is potentially harmful, not inherently harmful.

and the comments and ratings might help on the Android store, but Cydia and Rock don't really have robust ratings/comments systems and you're kind of shooting in the dark with most apps available on the jailbreak side of things.

No, but the people who use Apple's app store do.

No, I don't mean anyone here; I mean the mass-market consumers that Apple have tapped to make their stuff successful - all those people guys like me and you get paid (or not) to administer and support when the shit hits the fan and that cursor pack they installed from a flash advert "accidentally" came pre-loaded with three trojans, two worms and even a good old-fashioned macro virus.

Seriously guys, do you really think Apple likes having to pay people to play with all the latest games that come out for their portable devices? This is an unnecessary expense in a completely open app store, and also one Apple can't afford to drop as long as their hardware and software are so closely bound in the public imagination.

Chicken and egg. People just go install anything because apple created an ecosystem that encouraged such behavior.

Anyway, I'm bowing out there. I didn't want to come and argue with folks in an apple thread. I just wanted to point out that systems DO exist to check out what a thing is before downloading it.

Not really; these people are bringing that attitude with them from their home PCs. Apple have clearly realised exactly what they are dealing with and positioned themselves accordingly, because the instant an app fucks up someone's iPad, Apple will get the (public, media driven) blame, not whoever wrote it.

Google don't have to do this because everyone already knows Google goes everywhere on the internet and will even find you porn if you ask nicely enough, and also because the Android brand isn't nearly as closely associated with Google as the iDevices are with Apple Inc.

You are correct that Apple do deserve some of the blame for this, mostly because they deliberately went after this market segment twelve years ago with the iMac, but there is an education issue apple are not responsible for at play here. Not that they are doing anything to fix it either, of course.

Why spend the time/money fixing it when plenty of people are perfectly happy to pay you so they don't have to learn? Providing such a service is Apple's "thing" now. They're not going to get rid of their own market.

Has anyone had any negative experiences with the iPad's compass capabilities?

The app that I work on leans heavily on the compass and we noticed that the iPad's compass readouts vary somewhere between barely passable and downright awful.

We then noted that the iPad doesn't ship with a native compass app.

It is these two facts that have led me to conclude that the iPad might be equipped with the gyroscope in the iPhone 4, undocumented, shipped before the firmware had been perfected, and is being used in conjunction with the magnetometer to calculate headings.

    Thoughts?

What lead you to that conclusion? My 3GS, with (as far as I know) just the magnetometer, is pretty terrible at determining an accurate bearing. I'm not surprised the iPad is equally bad, but I don't think a gyroscope would make it worse.

It would make it worse if they are calculating the heading with it and the firmware wasn't complete at launch.

The heading accuracy is the same as the iPhone, it's the frequency with which it updates and how quickly it responds to change (on a timescale of seconds) that is significantly different.

Interference or no, you can place an iPhone and iPad right next to each other, then use the Maps compass, and see that there is a real difference.

We've tested two different iPads in 4 or 5 different locations.

If you tap the "locate me" button on the Maps app, it switches to compass mode.

It is the very fact that they didn't include a compass app on the iPad that gives even a shred of weight to my theory.

It definitely has a magnetometer or something that is calculating heading, and it sucks.

Wow, that's really cool. I had no idea it did that.

Yeah it seems to work better when flat to the ground.

We did some research over the weekend and based on app reviews for apps that utilize compass-like features, this is a recurring problem. We tried 3 or 4 different astronomy apps, paid and not paid, and only one of them didn't suck badly with the compass.

So something is craptastic about this compass and I am praying that it's just hidden gyroscope glitches!

It still sounds just like my 3GS, which is lucky to be within 15° at its most accurate. Edit: While flat, in ideal conditions.

Edit: Unrelated, but how is all this dust getting under my screen? I thought they were bright or dead pixels at first, but it's just goddamn dust reflecting light from the screen.

Damn, Apple just announced that they've sold 3 million iPads in the first 80 days... A runaway hit, especially when one considers the thing isn't even in all international markets yet (nine more countries next month).

I have to wait a couple months to get mine (big trip coming up that will bleed me dry), but kudos to you 3 million lucky bastards who already have one.

So, on June 19, I decided to give in and get an iPad. Sold out at Best Buy and Apple store, too lazy to go check any other stores, so I order it online. Ships July 2nd, arrives July 8? Fail! I called up 16 stores and one cool Apple store put me on an iPad reservation list, claiming they get shipments every few days, and I can always cancel my online order to get the reserved iPad, I'm just wondering one thing. Is the ship date July 2nd because it is out of stock everywhere and needs to be produced, or does Apple normally have you wait like two weeks for the iPad?

I don't think Apple is the sort of company that would risk losing your sale now just to delay getting your sale by two weeks; they aren't handguns after all...

Yes, it's a stock issue - iPads are selling like iHotcakes - still don't get why it takes six days to ship though. I guess that's what you get for living in a big country. :P
