Satellite Theater Freeplay

edited March 2010 in PAX Archive
If one were to look at the schedule one would notice that there are several "Evening Freeplay" slots. Traditionally, the Satellite Theater Enforcers (whom I represent) would show a movie or random videos. This time around, none of the slots are quite long enough for a movie, so we'd like to see what you, the attendees, would like to do with an open theater.

We have access to everything PAX does, we can requisition systems and games from Console Freeplay, we can bring in a laptop or show DVDs and conceivably we can get tables and games from Tabletop and play Galaxy Trucker for an hour or something. Really, the draw here is the space and equipment. Doing something where you can have seating for many, the sound setup to speak to all of them and a projector to play games at an astounding size.

In previous years, we've serviced very few people in the freeplay times and while I know alot of that has to do with the times being so late, I suspect that the activities not being much of a draw is just as culpable.

We really would like to hear your ideas, and I can say that if you have a good idea that people get behind, it can very easily become a reality.

assuming its at all possible you could show video of some of the panels that some may have missed. either the more popular ones that people were turned away from, or the panels that were overshadowed/ignored. unlikely, yeah and probably not worth it as they will probably be included in the dvds, both official and unofficial.

still something to consider, and hopefully top and better. :)

Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog with shadowcast (similar to how Rocky Horror Picture Show is done). I have a group here who does this on a very small scale a couple times a month. We may have also made it into Dr. Horrible's Drink Along Blog :)

    Here's our group at Halloween:

Another option is to show Adult swim stuff of various sorts. Average length is only 15-30 minutes. I could go for some ATHF, Sealab 2021, Brak Show, Space Ghost coast to coast, cartoon planet, and Harvey Birdman

I like the Dr. Horrible idea - I like the idea of replaying panels for those that missed them.

Maybe have some impromptu improv comedy with audience participation - a la' Whose Line is it anyway.

    Show episodes of Firefly.
    Show episodes of The Guild.
Show episodes of Red Vs. Blue.

How about a giant screen competition with a party game like Rayman RR2, Mario Kart, COD, or Boom Blox?

We could have people rotate in and out either by round or something else...

The original thought I had was the final scene from "The Wizard" where they race through Mario 3, but I don't know how much of a draw that would be...

This is something that can happen. One of my favorite PAX memories was an impromptu Smash Bros Melee round-robin in '07. It was a ton of fun for everyone.

All I need is for people to agree on a game.

As it stands, we only have the one projector and screen. BUT if I see enough support around an idea like this one, I'll see what I can do about getting a couple TVs and extra consoles from CFP or Console Tourney.

In a perfect world, what would this look like?

In a perfect world, depending on the shape of the room:

The main projector would have to be something spectator friendly, so either a rhythm game or something suspenseful.

The rest of the room would be scattered with consoles with TVs, one to the opposite wall of the projector and one or two on either side (depending on if the room is more square or rectangle shaped). Each set up with a different multiplayer game (may I suggest Castle Crashers for one) of different types

    Example:

    Main Projector Screen
..................DJ Hero ....................
...................................................
...................................................
...................................................
...................................................
...................................................
    Racing Game..........Fighting Game
...................................................
...................................................
...................................................
...................................................
............Castle Crashers..............
    Back Wall

Also, if you could get snacks or refreshments in there, that would be boss. I know the con center has a vendor you have to go through, but if you could get one of them to set up shop in there for the block, it would be nice.

In an ideal setup (At least the way I see it) you would project a random TV show on the screen as background noise.

Set up a few TV's and consoles around the room

maybe two tables for random pickup card games.

Spectator appropriate gaming on big screens would be cool!
I only mentioned shows because someone else had mentioned Dr. Horrible - if you could appropriate more than on projector and screen - a mix of gaming and shows (to pass the time) or video of previous panels would be nice.

Sorry for a second post here, but I gotta bring up this idea that I've been wanting to mention for a while.

Ok, so we used to do Beat the Pros, which was great, but I think it can be one-upped with Rock Band.
We have two drum or two guitar stations set up and have them go head-to-head in local score duel. Here's how it'd work:

People would line up, the first person gets the champion spot, the second gets the challenger spot. The challenger chooses a song, they play the song, and the winner continues on in the champion spot. The next player in line gets in the challenger spot and the cycle continues.

If we could get prizes for this, we could give out a raffle ticket for every challenge win and figure out some way to divvy up prizes, like players with the most tickets.

Anyhoo, just something that's been rolling around in my brain for a while!

IMO, games should definitely happen. Moe's idea is, as he would put it, boss. A few TVs, some good, quick multiplayer games (Wii Sports/Resort, RR2, Mario Kart, SSB, Brawl, Halo, Rock Band, etc) that are conducive to quick swapping of players, and something TV show-esque on in the background would be awesome. Snacks and drinks would make it double-plus awesome.

If this is going on in one of the theaters at night, I will be there hanging out. I'm really fond of the more casual "come in and hang out, there's lots of stuff to do" kind of vibe.

Can we get a foosball or ping pong table up in here? God, I would never leave if either of those things existed. It would be legen... wait for it... dary.

NJ mentioned board games as a possibility in the OP, and I'd totally be down for that. I think the only possible concern would be that if you introduce board games you also introduce tables and chairs, which might cut down on the total available space in the room for other things like people, TVs, SUMOs, etc. If the theaters are the size of the theaters in Seattle, this might not be a big deal. You could easily put tables along the edges of the room and still have plenty of space leftover.

So, that being said, I would absolutely love to see some Carcassonne, Dominion, or other games set up. I only suggest those because they're relatively quick. Something like Arkham Horror, which stretches for hours, might not be as appropriate here.

Still. The general idea of board games fits very well with the "come in and hang out, there's tons of stuff to do" kind of vibe that seems to be gaining momentum.
