Neighbor issues

So, my neighbor likes to smoke pot. A lot of pot. Now this wouldn't be MY issue except the smell floods my bedroom and the smell of pot makes me nauseated and gives me a killer headache. Waking up every weekend feeling sick is getting really old. I'd honestly ask them to find a new place to smoke but I'm not really sure who's doing it. I think it's the new neighbors below me but I have no proof. I don't want to randomly knock on the door of a person I don't know and say "Do you smoke tons of shitty pot every weekend?" I don't want to complain to the complex manager because, while I know it's technically illegal, I'm not sure it should be. For all I know it's medical pot, right?

So people, how would you go about this?

You've basically outlined your two options already, either of which are pretty appropriate. Did it start right this new person moved in? Then it's probably them, and "medical" or not, you have a right to say something. If it's not them, chances are they can smell it too.

I don't see your problem with complaining to the super either. Illegal or not, it's making you sick, and you have every right to complain. Are you going to let your moral compass get in the way of the fact that it's seriously inconveniencing you?

what if you got one of those vapor smell machine things for your room, a stronger one than the plug in fabreeze things? I've seen some that are flowerpot sized and seem pretty strong.

anyway if you complain to the manager, they wouldn't know whose unit to go to, and knocking on the doors and saying hey are you the huge stoner is only going to get you blank stares, whether it's the culprit or not.

The management would have an "idea" of where to go or they could toss a flier at the residents telling whoever it is to knock it the fuck off.

Also, "Febreze" or any sort of vapor smell machine will not help. It'll just smell like pot and flowers. Gag inducing.

I personally would take the knocking approach.

If you're not comfortable doing that, you could leave an (anonymous) note on your suspected neighbors' doors saying "hey just a heads up, there's weedsmell in surrounding units, you should dial it back before you get popped by the landlord."

If that doesn't fix things, then just go to the manager because the dude are being dumbshits.

Febreze contains cyclodextrins which adsorb aromatic molecules, which then either fall to the floor or cannot be recognized by chemoreceptors in your nose. Febreze is incredibly effective, though it can be tough to find unscented varieties.

But that's tangential, as people here are correct that it's not your job to alter your living space to accommodate their behavior. Even if it is medicinal marijuana, they have a responsibility to control the smoke.

Tell your landlord there's a funky smell flooding your bathroom and you suspect it's leaking in from an adjacent unit.

Your landlord will go off and tell the adjacent units to your bathroom about it and it'll tip off whoever is doing it to think maybe 'Hey, maybe I should be careful about smoking weed in the apartment'

I think you should knock on the door of the place you think is doing it. It may not have even occurred to the people doing it that they might be bothering anyone. There are definitely ways to minimize the smell and thus avoid the problem you're having, it's obvious they aren't even trying. I bet they'll apologize and be reasonable. Though you may have to remind them every so often.
