YES! LOOM! Don't know how many times I played through that one. Sad I never got to play it with the voice/256color add-on. You needed le original, not the LucasArts classics version, for it. Sadness.

While we're at it, and I haven't read the entirety of this thread yet so bear with me if I'm just spamming, but a quick nod to Commander Keen. It was by id Software, so not as obscure as some, but still an awesome side-scroller. Oh, and you could play Pong on Keen's watch, too:

    The year? 1989.

The world looked on in awe as the Berlin Wall was torn down, ending the specter of the U.S.S.R forever.

In celebration, Konami released a game that was a literal masterpiece. That game was The Adventures of Bayou Billy.
    Bayou_Billy_box.jpg

The game had figtin', shootin', and drivin' courtesy of your NES controller and Zapper. It was like playing Double Dragon, Outrun!, and Duck hunt all at the same time!!

Also I am pretty sure I am the only person who has ever played this game.

EDIT: Has anyone mentioned Conquest of the Crystal Palace? It was a nice sidescroller.

I had always hoped someone would translate 2/3/4/5 for the US but it never happened.

You can get a fully translated version of 2 and 2.5 (Der langrisser) now. I recommend 2, as the Genesis emulator seems to run a lot more smoothly.

If you have trouble figuring it out (I did) just PM me.

Possibly my favorite FPS of all time (but then again, the only ones I'd played at the time were Doom and Wolfenstein). I remember loving everything about this game. The story, the enemies, the graphics, the music and the fact that if you ran out of ammo, you were fucked.

Easily my favorite sports game. Other team about to score? Kill them. Literally. With a sword. Or an axe.

Here's a few, not sure if they all meet the overlooked spec completely, but they are all awesome, non-mainstream games.

    256px-Sacrifice_by_Interplay_-_box_art.jpg

Brutal Legend is basically Sacrifice 2. Tim Curry is in both games. Which is good because these are the only RTS games I like and I frantically seek them out. I have a copy of Battlezone, Battlezone 2, and Sacrifice all put away. So I'm keeping BL forever. Plus someone from the Sacrifice team worked on BL.

And while I'm at it, I like Battlezone even better than Sacrifice, because every tank, vehicle, or Giant Robot you build, you could hop in the cockpit, and if you blew up, you eject, and have to jetpack to your base to get another vehicle, or order one of your units to give you their ride, or whip out a sniper rifle, kill an enemy in their cockpit and steal their ride.

Battlezone 1 was awesome, just because it happened in the solar system and every couple of missions were on a different wicked map. You start out on the moon, then you go to Mars, Mercury I think, Titan, Io, Europa etc How AWESOME is that? And the gameplay itself is great. The graphics are tolerable even today, but I wish for example on Io where Jupiter occupies literally half the sky that it was more than just a big picture that doesn't move. Battlezone with today's graphics, wow..

I specifically also remember the advertisements for Battlezone in the magazines over 10 years ago and I thought it sucked bad. The ads compared it too much to the old Battlezone which was just a stupid tank sim, and I had no desire to play a tank sim. There was nothing indicating the awesome story or RTS elements, or the ability to outfit and steal other vehicles.

I then got Sacrifice with my video card and while it looked good for some reason I never quite got into it.

    Ohh... How about Metal Marines.

In this SNES RTS you take command as a plucky young commander liberating Earth from an alien invasion.
You do this by establishing bases with AA batteries, radar arrays, and defense pillboxes while going on the offensive with Surface-Surface missile launchers, ICBMs and METAL MARINES!!!! (Giant Mecha with guns and laser swords!!!)

Every second you produce $1 and 1 power unit, but building more supply stations and power plants increases this. Money builds stuff (and upgrades units) and power allows you to launch attacks.

Growing up with the Atari ST and the amiga there are a lot of games that seemed to disappear into the mists of time.

One of the games I loved as a kid was Corporation

It was developed by Core long before Tomb Raider came out and was a simple 1st person stealth shooter where you were sneaking through a corporation's offices.

I used to play it for hours not really knowing what I doing, but it was pretty awesome nonetheless.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Srt3n1OANw&feature=video_response

    Talking of dungeon crawlers...

    Liberation: Captive 2

    Intro

At the time that was considered pretty damn cutting edge. And it isn't compressed video either, the A1200 and CD32 versions were identical except the CD32 version had that intro with voice over. (whilst the A1200 version had the intro without voice over)
And if memory serves you could get fancier graphics on the floppy version if you had a hard drive, there was a prerender the scenery to hard drive option, took up loads of hard drive space (well, loads for the time) but it made everything look nicer.
