I wonder if the linearilty—and lack of smoke and mirrors—would bother people less if the game did a better job integrating the world with the gameplay, a la FF12.

I think that's my biggest problem with the game. The gameplay feels very divorced from the world it takes place in—less so than in FFX (with random battles) but moreso than FF12, and much moreso than something like Zelda or Brutal Legend. You fight the same way in a forest as you do in a narrow street or in a giant field. And the transition from walking around to battle remains, as always, a bizarre "convention" that ideally would not exist.

The backgrounds are absolutely beautiful, and I'm willing to accept the design decision that separates the battles into another "dimension" because it probably frees up processing power for the backgrounds. But in future FF games, this shit cannot stand, man. Having interactive environments would also open up complex gameplay possibilities.

    I love this map.

I love all the overworld maps for FF games though. The worlds always have very aesthetically-pleasing shaped continents.

I postulate that Dragon Quest VIII had the best world map out of any RPG. Fully to scale, fully explorable, and drop dead gorgeous.

I wouldn't mind seeing a return of that, I tell you what.

Yes, that is a great, if not the best example of how to do an overworld. The story structure was still linear, but there was a ton of extra stuff that was scattered quite nicely throughout the entire world.

One of the best things about RPGs is trying to find the town you're going to, and then you find the wrong town, full of shit to do. So awesome.

It's inaccessible during chapter 12, but at the start of chapter 13, and all through the last dungeon, you can go back. And then you can go back after beating the game as well.

If you're like me, you don't like doing this once you beat a game. It feels kind of pointless. However, I've been told there is a teleporter in either Chapter 12 or 13 that takes you back to the Chapter 11 area. So you could continue on, unlock the final Crystarium stages, teleport back, max everything out and do all the missions, then continue on to beat the game.

If someone could clarify exactly which chapter or area that teleporter is in, that would be cool. I've been told it's 13, and then I read someone say it was 12. Maybe both?

EDIT: HA HA, RIGHT ABOVE MY POST IS THE ANSWER. Thanks, Blackjack.

One of my favorite things about FF12 was that the world all really felt connected to me. You actually moved huge distances through environments then saw their relation to each other in the map. FF13 doesn't seem to have that. Like all of a sudden Sazh and Vanille are in the middle of a forest, Lightning and Hope are in this wierd space woods... I mean, I guess Coccoon is an artificial environment or something, don't they say at the begining that the Fal'Cie built it or something? It just doesn't feel very connected.

I thought you only got the last Crystarium when you beat the game, dont you mean the 2nd last stage of it ? Because that one you can get in Chapter 11, even without moving on to chapter 12.

    But they're so cool!

Stage 10 is straight stats, an accessory slot and a role level for all your main roles (2 for the secondary ones).

And the stats are huge. I just finished all 3 "main" roles for each character and I'm sitting at 15-25k HP per character with insane STR/MAG.

I'm gonna finish maxing each character then start working on all the missions and weapons I need to destroy everything with my pinky.

I might finish on Adamantortises though; so I'm not having to duplicate my time farming money/materials for ultimate weapons. It's just so easy to watch Hulu while farming the Maww.

Linearity isn't a problem. The game not trusting you with the full combat system for 15+ hours is. In retrospect it's even worse due to how much better the game is when controlling 3 people.

Anyway, I've been cruising through missions with ease, 5 starring the last 6-7 first try. I just got the chocobo one and for the first time I felt I had to use a sentinel with so much damage being thrown around and it killed my time (plus I didn't know this was even the mark). Time to abuse another fortisol and try to keep time spent healing to a minimum I suppose.

God damn it the second Proudclad fight is consistently wrecking my shit. It wouldn't be so bad if it he didn't reset his chain bar whenever he feels like it. Anyone give me some pointers?

I feel your pain here, this is what I did:
My party was Lightning/Fang/Hope. Hope is equipped with a Diamond Bangle and a -15% damage reduction item (Upgraded Royal Armlet). It's useful to have Lightning and Hope with them as well, because this fight is going to get extremely hairy fast.

You need at least these three combinations:

Com/Com/Rav - He's resistant to absolutely everything, but physically hitting him works so com/com is good for damage here.

Med/Sen/Med - This is to rapidly heal to keep attacking and to survive his counterattack spam (and cannon sweep).

Com/Sab/Syn - This is to get as many buffs as possible, Hope MUST have haste to have any chance of winning this fight. You will not heal faster than he will spam you for tons of damage otherwise.

Step 1: Use Bully initially, attacking with Lightning and use libra immediately. Let Fang spam deprotect and deshell while Hope goes and gives everyone as much as a boost as he can. Switch to diversity (Rav/Com/Med) if required. Do not let HP drop too much.

Step 2: When he goes aerial go all out attack (Rav/Com/Rav or Com/Com/Rav) and just try to hit it as much as possible. Do not let him get his 100% charge or he is likely to do something annoying.

Step 3: When you break him and finish doing bonus damage from the bar, he'll begin "retaliating". This is where combat clinic comes into play. Keep yourself fully healed and just outlast it, attacking at this point just isn't really worth it due to his ridiculous damage and knockdown.

Usually he will heal after the first round of this, but don't sweat it because once you have this routine down you'll easily start to get the upper hand and win. He usually won't heal again, so repeating the cycle (tank -> flying -> tank) strategies to deal damage and survive you can usually beat him easily. The trick is to never let your HP get low, because his damage output is fast enough that he will kill you before you can heal. Mostly it's just patience and not panicking, with the exception of the ultra annoying cannon sweep thing if you are well buffed and have two healers you shouldn't die. Just focus your damage output elsewhere and that will solve him.

Now you're just making me sad. Is there something wrong with the Chocobo Treasure Hunt mini-game? It seems like it would be easy to farm Gil. I haven't done it myself yet, but I'm about to work my way toward it now that I've maxed out Crystarium stage 8.

    Huh.

Even with my characters almost maxed out I still can't kill the fucking Adamantortises without cheesing it with a summon then death.

    What the hell?

They have a lot of fucking hit points. Try fucking it up with Fang and her Highwind attack.

It's not the damage. I have no doubt I could put that out. it's taking half my health per stomp; and Hope can't last for two stomps. He never heals himself first. And if I have both him and Vanille heal then I'll never get the damage out. It's lose lose.

Switch to 3 sentinels every time it does an attack, that will reduce damage taken. If you still can't, I could post the whole strat I used.

*edit* actually I'll copy /paste my old post from neogaf..
I don't know if the spell and item names are the same in english, but I'll at least try to change the class names. Also, I don't know how leveled you are. For this strat to work 100% of the time, you should have all 3 characters with Tier 2 weapons and 16k hp or more on everyone. You can do without the hp if you switch to sentinels on EVERY attack (including regular stomps), with the high HP it isn't necessary.

I also use the term 'break' instead of 'stagger', as it is called in the US version I think.

    strat
Kill both legs and he falls over.

    I used: fang/lightning/hope
Give genji gloves to fang so she can break 100k damage and grow egg for 2x exp. Give everyone 2ea. +25% defense. Give lightning a +phys dmg item and hope +magic dmg item. Use their last slot for best choice and good choice (those 2 items are the +rare drop and +normal drop).

    rav/rav/rav
    sen/sen/sen
    syn/syn/med
    com/syn/med
    sab/sab/rav
    com/com/rav

*switch to sen/sen/sen to absorb dmg anytime you see him cast quake or shout then immediately switch back*

    1. Open with rav/rav/rav. Depending on how soon the adamantaimai attacks, you can either break his leg in two turns or may have to switch to healer before breaking it. Let your turns finish so his break % goes above 500% if you can, but don't spend time waiting for another turn.
    2. Once it breaks I switch to syn/syn/med and cast bravda+haste on myself(fang). If you have time, cast haste on hope.
    3. Switch to com/syn/med and use highwind. If your stats are high it will kill the leg in one strike. If you need another hit then repeat 1-3.
    4. Once the leg is down, target his other leg and do a single attack just to get it targeted. Switch to syn/syn/med and cast haste+faithda on hope. Switch to rav/rav/rav and break his other leg.
    5. Switch to syn/syn/med and buff lightning with bravda+haste. Switch to com/syn/med and use highwind to kill the leg. Once the leg is down switch to syn/syn/med to refresh bravda+haste on fang (so it lasts the entire time he is fallen over). *He may fall over while you are casting your buffs and interrupt you so either wait until after the fall or cast right away*
    6. Switch to sab/sab/rav and spam weak with fang. Lightning should get deshell+depro up around the same time as you. Cast curse/depro/shell if you get weak up before lightning.
    7. Switch to rav/rav/rav to break him and then switch immediately to com/com/rav. If your stats are high you can kill him in one round, otherwise you will have to repeat 1-7 for a second shot.

    basic info ..

hold the role list up while casting highwind but don't switch until the attack completes or it does less dmg.
