He complains that he doesn't care about the characters and thus the story is shallow, that they say the same 5 words over and over, Coccon, Pulse, La'Cie, Fal'Cie and something else, which I don't understand the complaint there, and that the battle system is contrived and complex which apparently makes it bad and that having difficult fights is a bad thing. Basically I disagree with almost every point he makes except that they probably should have fleshed out Cocoon a little more so you, as the player, actually cared about saving it.
See and im the type of guy who usually just looks for the pros in a game. That probably why I like the game because I enjoy the combat so much and everything thing else that is chapter 11+. Basically im ignoring the other flaws to see the end of the game and enjoy the other good things. Thing is I have a stack of rpg's sitting on my desk that I can't be bothered to play because even though they have great stories or what not but I can't stand the damn tedious combat systems.
Of course I could just be looking through final fantasy fan glasses as well. I always give square the benfit of the doubt even after the disappointment Ive felt from many of there recent games.
Yeah the combat system is fairly good, though I do prefer the gambit system from FF12 since I'm a control-freak. And the combat system would undoubtedly shine if gameplay wasn't constantly interrupted by the emo-thon from the characters and they didn't fuck with your character roster so much. Basically, the horrible abortion of an attempt at story-telling gets in the way of the actual game too much. Objectively-speaking, the actual game is pretty good and plenty enjoyable, but the overall experience really is marred by them railroading you for the Whining Olympics so often.
Edit: I do agree with his assessment of the writing though. The script (at least in English) sounds like the result of an algorithm that assembles sentences by pulling words at random from a keyword pool.
I agree about the story as well, it's pretty badly told all up and it takes far too long for the game to give you freedom over your party.
Chapters 9+ redeem the game a lot though in this aspect.
Merciless Judgment is fucking bullshit. That is all.
I am seriously thinking about going COM/SEN/MED and just whittling the bastard down. It doesn't help that the last time he killed me with it he used some bullshit attack that put Fog and Pain on all three of my dudes thus rendering me completely helpless
Alright, I'm about 37 hours into the game, and i'm loving the change chapter 11 offers me, so nice to just be out in the open a bit and fight the fuck out of things.
One thing, however, is increasingly starting to worry me. I run with a Lightning/Sash/Vanille party, and I often notice Lightning is outdamaging vanille and sash considerably. Her strength is at about 800, and Sash and Vanille's magic is about 600ish, yet she consistently seems to hit for about twice what my ravagers hit for and I'm starting to worry if I should have gone for hope, or fang instead. Someone reassure me that at the end game my two ravagers will not be gimped in damage-dealing compared to others in the game? It would really suck to have to switch characters because I can't kill something with them.

Commandos are the masters of damage against staggered targets. While hope and Lightning have good magic (around 1000+ for Lightning and Hope is around 1600) nobody touches the ridiculous damage that Fang is dealing. On a staggered target she's hitting for 99,999 damage easily. I really need to murder the monster with the genji gloves now.
Yeah. It's basically COM maintains stagger/slows decay/hits like a truck and RAV hits decently/pumps up the multiplier right?
I'm always on the fence during a stagger about how many COMs to run. Usually depends on the HP of the target, but on tougher targets I'll go RAV/RAV/RAV or COM/RAV/RAV until 500%+ stagger then go COM++.
Speaking of accessories, what do you guys put on your characters?
I have three slots so far, and for Lightning with her Blazefire Saber tree, I'm considering using HP, Strength, and Magic accessories. I don't have any of the other beneficial accessories yet.

Now you're just making me sad. Is there something wrong with the Chocobo Treasure Hunt mini-game? It seems like it would be easy to farm Gil. I haven't done it myself yet, but I'm about to work my way toward it now that I've maxed out Crystarium stage 8.
It's not though.
The items that can drop are too variable and you end up getting tail feathers every freaking time.
It chooses 5 spots at random when you enter the zone and they can be really far apart.
You could go for an hour and come up completely empty handed.
The only things you can dig up actually worth money are the gold and dolls. While they sell for decent amounts individually; again...its totally random and you could go a very long time before getting something worth anything. You're better off finding an enemy you can kill consistently and 5 star for sellable items.
Though; considering the sheer cost of making a single ultimate weapon even that sounds terribly boring.
I'm gonna go back to doing missions shortly and see if any of the rewards give me an edge here.

Yeah, I've got no intention of using Light as anything other than COM except for rushing a stagger out with RAV/RAV/RAV, but I keep hearing people mention Fang's Highwind attack, and I'm wondering if I should go Light/Fang/Hope or something instead of light/sash/vanille. I guess I don't really mind doing a bit less damage if it means I can keep my party, cause I'm so used to the versatility now, and I don't really miss a sentinel.

Lightning / Fang / Hope.
Kaiser Knuckle, Power Glove, Imperial Guard, / Power Glove, Royal Guard, Connosseir Catalog / Weirding Glyphs, Grow Egg, Royal Guard - is what I use, its pretty sweet, they got like 8k hp except Hope, he has like 6k+
with Crystarium 9th stage so, hp bangles arent that needed, except for hope. Got Super Ribbon too, but its a piece of shit.
Yeah, I've killed thousands of the things now and it truly is the simplest farming in FFXIII. I usually watch something on my computer while pushing A every now and again. The entire fight handles itself basically.

I've been underwhelmed by Axis Blade so far. I seem to get about 1/3 an ATB bar for every 4 attacks. I'm sure it adds up over time, but thus far it's been relatively unimpressive.
Whats the difference between the Gladius ability and Axis Blade ability?
Gladius doesnt have an ability, it just focuses on strength (at the expense of magic) Axis Blade regenerates a bit of Active Time Mode with each hit on an enemy.

I got the upgraded version, The Enkindler, ATB regen increased, pair it with Army of One and it wrecks shit, I intend to level Lionheart too though, Enkindler will be used as my speedboost farming weapon after that.
Also, I don't care what any of you say, I like My Hands.

I keep seeing ATB charge on it. As for Axis, I charge about as fast as if I had haste, but I also threw on the ATB scarf, energy sash and the other sash.

Gladius doesn't have an effect and the reason to use Axis is because it's in the boost category so if you par it with 4 accessories you get 30% faster ATB, which it then happens to lose if you make it into a ultimate weapon.

Chapter 6s music was an abomination because I couldn't just mute it to hear the comments from the other characters. Sazh has one of the most hilarious lines in the game during that segment.

For more speed boosts, when you get a Tetradic Tiara, you should max it (1 level) and disassemble it, it will give 5 items, a few talismans, perfume (worth 12.500gil) and last but not least - Sprint Shoes IE. Auto-Haste.
I know, but that doesn't really help me now, does it? :P
Ignoring that whole "post-game" stuff
You can 5star it without grinding or having any special items, it requires luck though.
On the last form of the boss, open with rav/rav/rav and stagger it as fast as possible. Don't switch to healing yourself, if you really have to you can use the full cure TP ability, hopefully you will still have 4 tp by this time.
You will have to test it to see which does more dmg during stagger since I cant remember. It is either sab/com/rav or sab/rav/rav. I'm guessing sab/com/rav. Anyway, debuff him a little with sab/rav/rav before hes about to become staggered and then switch to sab/com/rav and spam vanilla's 'death' spell.
Sometimes you will get him to 5% other times 50% before your timer runs too low. If you see your timer running too low just restart the fight. If any of your party gets disabled, restart.
You pretty much have to just burn him down without ever switching roles except for right when he is staggered or you will run out of time. Death spam is kind of cheap and I'm sure leveling up would make 5star easier, but it works.

With the exception of some debuffs, all I did was com/rav/rav and then com/com/rav. Fang and Lightning then just completely dismantled him.
Looking forward to getting the Hermes Sandals and the ability to actually progress Lightning's weapon to the second stage.
Edit:
Also, I may be the only one, but I didn't hate not having control over who was in my party in previous chapters. I actually enjoyed it because it fleshed out those characters, as well as let me use characters I don't plan on playing with.

I liked not having control of who was in the party when the party was actually separated. It did exactly as you said and let me use people that I may not have and fleshed out their characters. I however don't really like that you can't choose which character you control and that you couldn't pick your party for that short period they actually were together. Those decisions seemed arbitrary.

Why would you want Hermes Sandals ? Your hp needs to be in the red zone for haste to activate, Sprint Shoes just give you Auto Haste from the beginning of the fight (It wears out like a normal buff would too though)
