After a power cut my drive is acting a bit wonky; if I keep it plugged in when the computer's first switched on it won't show up at all. If I unplug it, wait for it to stop spinning and then plug it back in it works fine. I've run the windows 'fix and repair' thing but it didn't really help the situation, yet still took a couple of hours to complete. I've tried a few 'free' programs to fix it but they always ask for money at the final stage of the process.
Any freeware to sort this out? It's a maxtor 1tb drive, if that makes any difference.
Do you still have the warranty? If so, bring it in for service. I don't think they cover power cuts but the service centre is still the best place to approach. Back up all the data while you can because this can get worse. Considering it is not recognizing the drive, it might be USB issue in which case it is easy to fix. Consider UPS power supply - power cuts kill so many computers around the world!

But unfortunately I've lost the box it came in. I have a feeling my girlfriend might have thrown it out.
