Road2PAX RV trip

Hey. Yesterday my road2pax.com blog was linked to by @Official_PAX. We received a lot of hits and several questions and comments. I figured it would be a good idea to make a post here since there seems to be some interest.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, here is a quick background. I recently came into possession of a lightly used 30' RV. Its primary purpose is for me to take my wife and 2 kids camping and boating in the area. It is also my RTV (Road Trip Vehicle). And since PAX is my Geek Mecca, it would make sense to use it to road trip to Boston and probably Seattle.

Now since we are going to a gaming convention, the stock RV is nowhere near sufficient. We have spent the last 60 hours or so doing some pretty heavy customizations. Instead of the old 20" CRT TV, it now has two flat panel LCD TVs. Instead of the stock crappy stereo, it now has my entire 5.1 Home Theater installed. And if you are going to have the Home Theater, you need consoles right? We built a pull-out tray beneath the couch that holds the receiver, XBox 360, Original XBox (for old school stuff), and a PS3. Lastly, my Home Theater PC with GPS and lots of movies and music is also included.

There are several other customizations we had to perform in order to accomodate all of this. For example, the main TV needed to be mounted right where a window was. That required us to build a removable mount over the window. Also since there will be 6 of us in the RV, we needed to make some changes so we can get everyone sleeping comfortably. There is now a bunk in the back that breaks down.

I'll leave it at that for now. If you would like to know more, check out the website or post here. We are also on twitter at @road2pax.

Thanks!

I've been wondering where you plan on parking it.

We have a place nearby that we will be staying at and we will drive a small van back and forth. I can't say exactly where for obvious reasons but it isn't far. Parking this thing downtown isn't really a possibility. :)

Yea, while you could technically drive it in the city it's definitely not recommended. Though I would get a kick out of seeing it valeted.

Sure you can. Host a parking lot party with that bitchin' RV. We'll start at your place and go wherever. It'll be the geek equivalent of driving down 5th Avenue in a limo with some strippers and a hot tub.

Not that I, as a self-proclaimed geek, would mind doing that.

Not a bad idea but might be a bit tough to pull off. The RV will see a lot of tailgating but I don't think I could pull it off at PAX. :)

Do you have an interested horn mod or is it just standard?

No, we have looked into it but it's just not feasible. They're more expensive than you might think and PAX is just one of the many purposes to which this vehicle will be put. The idea was tabled in favor of other modifications that'll give us greater mileage.
It would be sweet though, right? I'd love one that played Mario's death ditty from Mario 1.

Oh, and in case it's not clear, I'm the other guy involved with this build. hugheser is Brian, I'm Jesse. Hi all!

Yeah, you guys should totally join us on the CCST this year. Yes, it's a straight two day drive to get there, but it's with 25-50 awesome people in a huge line of cars that dominates the highway (plus you guys would make a great anchor during lane changes). Also, we typically don't stay together in our entirety for the trip back, so if you wanted to take your time and see the country, you could still do that. There's a link in my sig to our video from last year, you guys should give it a watch and see some of the awesome.

We tested it out and there is little vibration. The RV is something like 13000lbs, with massive shocks and large tires. It seems to float over bumps. Our testing was on some bad roads too and not a single skip. It is like you are driving a cloud.

Moe, we talked about it some already and that is a real possibility. We'll have a better idea about the logistics after East. It's on the brain though.
