I noticed that more than a couple of people in the PokeCrawl topic expressed interest in hitting a beer bar at some point during PAX weekend.
Let's face it, matters will be quite busy until the end of PAX, what with various gaming events and unofficial outings.
So I figured several attendees will probably be leaving on Monday. Why not hit a beer bar on Sunday evening after PAX comes to a close?
If anyone's interested, here are some potential locations (not a comprehensive list):
Bukowski's Tavern: very close to Hynes, has a great selection (mostly bottle), and good burgers. Very limited space, though and a group of >15 people might be a problem to accomodate.
Sunset Grill and Tap: about 20min away taking the T, if you're interested in seeing the student section of Boston. Selection is about the same as Bukowski's, but focusing on tap. Lots of food choices, better for larger groups.
Boston Beer Works: more the sort of place to grab a drink and bite after a ball game. Selection doesn't impress me, but it's great for groups. A 10-15min walk from Hynes.
The Lower Depths: has a medium selection of beer, nothing obscure, but the best food deal in town: $1 franks (toppings cost extra). 10min walk from Hynes.
If anyone's interested, drop a reply. I'd say it would be a fine way to toast away PAX East until next year!

To clarify: one of the rules about Boston (besides complaining about the weather, how the T sucks, and how it's a bad idea to wear a Yankees cap) is to downright avoid Cheers.
You, sir, are on the correct topic.

Free booze?
I'm ALWAYS down for free booze.
If you've got a couple of hours, sneak over to the Harpoon Brewery for a tour and tastings. I think it's either free or a couple of dollars.
I second Sunset Grill and Tap. Besides their awesome tap selection, you can get your beer in any size from 2oz to 128oz (go table tap!).
I also really like the Publick House, about 25 min away on the green line. They have a fantastic selection of Belgian ales, and amazing fries served with delicious dipping suaces such as McChouffe garlic mayo or Rogue Chipotle Ale mayo.
I've heard decent things about Lord Hobo. Just wondering if any locals had any first-hand opinions on the venue?
At the risk of sounding like the local who never goes out, I've never even remotely heard of Lord Hobo.
I'm voting Sunset Grill.

They had a pretty good selection of beers, ~40 I think, with a lot of the local breweries being represented. I had a burger and it was pretty good, not the best but definitely hit the spot after a few beers.
It's over in not-boston (Cambridge)
I haven't been, but I heard it's pretty good. Sunset has a better beer selection, but the atmosphere of Sunset isn't really beer geekery.

This will happen, in one form or another. The location is.... just a detail....
Sunset is open until 1 every day. Other Side Cafe until midnight.

Then I shall vote for Sunset :winky:
In a group of four if it helps with the head count.
Where did you hear this? Otherside Cafe is open until 2am Thursday - Saturday, 1am every other day.

Yelp. A magnificent bastion of accuracy, it would seem.

- There's another Bukowski's in Cambridge that has much more space and can more easily accomodate larger parties (the one in Boston is super tiny). It is, however, not super easily accessible by T (would be about a 20min. walk from the Central Square T stop, or one of many buses from Central, Harvard Square, or Lechmere on the Green Line).
- The Publicke House is amazing. Probably the best beer selection there is, period, and great food. They don't really do reservations though, as far as I know. It's really no less accessible via T
- Sunset has a good beer menu, but at least IMHO, the food is average at best. It's very generic american restaurant food. I'm not a huge fan of the place, but that said, it is easily the most spacious of all these places.
- Finally, one place no one has mentioned yet is Redbones. It's a BBQ place in Davis Square on the MBTA red line. It's not hard to get to (one transfer from green line to red line) -- would probably take 20-25min. from downtown via the T. It has a great beer menu, lots of space, and good BBQ. It would definitely be another place to consider.
