Actually, I could imagine their sales model is the reason it will never become a MMO. They just make too much money this way.
Think about it, they have games that are effectively crack cocaine. People will always come back for more. They are in fact so desperate for more, that they will buy the same game up to five times.
Sure, a lot of people settle for Pokemon Pearl. But a sizeable part of their customer base will buy Diamond as well, and even more will buy Platinum when it comes out. Then later they sell the remake, and while most will buy only one some will buy both. It is quite possible to my mind that enough people buy enough of the duplicates that they would actually lose money by making it a MMO, especially considering that most of the game lies in building your team. In a MMO you would not be forced to start an entirely new team in the same way that the normal games do, which could lead to people getting bored quicker.
my idea for a pokemon mmo is basically be like ff12 wherein the pokemon are just wandering around in patches of grass, no random battles, with the 'rare' pokemon spawning infrequently. i guess for the battle system i'd love for it to be in real time, but it could probably just be 'see pokemon in the wild, go up to it, change to a battle screen' thing
also, each trainer is obviously customizable so you're not just dude in a hat

it wouldn't even need to be in a new area. start off in kanto + orange islands, then expac into johto, hoenn, sinnoh, etc, therefore always having money come in.
pokemon league battles in the style of the show, where it's just a giant pvp tournament after you've gotten the gym battles
what's the average number of ultra balls being used to capture your respective legendary? it's varied in previous games, like how i randomly had the first one work on Giratina in platinum.
I always like to read the fan-made pokemon tabletop rpgs that show up every now and then. I would play and/or run the hell out of a well-made pokemon pen-n-paper game, regardless of how ill-suited pokemon is to that type of game.

god nintendo should just pay me to do this
but given nintendo's history of dealing with the internet it is just not going to happen
unless everyone is instanced into their own game and you can run around with other people if you all have each other's friend codes
