Online HDD and Networking

Short of it: I use a mapped network drive at work in a small network. We all use a shared workbook (excel) and modify it pretty darned frequently during the day. I want to translate this to the internet.

At first, I thought I'd give VPNing a try and hosting a server at home. TDS in Wisconsin is great, but I can't get things like OpenVPN or LogMeIn to work between Dallas Tx computers behind Fios routers, and me, behind DSL routers.

Then I thought I'd give Sharefile and their drive-map service a shot. This failed because Excel couldn't seem to access the file appropriately fast enough, and left me with many temp files in the Sharefile drive.

I also thought I'd try FTP mapped drives, but that leaves me with the same problem as the sharefile.

So, I'm coming here for some help.

Anyone have any ideas how I can easily setup access to a Shared workbook file that's quick enough to handle excel's requirements?

TIA

Is this a file that people open, edit and save?

Might give Dropbox a shot - it keeps a folder synced across computers.

(I've never used Excel like that, so I have no idea how it handles file locks and stuff.)

Dropbox seems to work ok, but not exactly like having the file on a network location.

Maybe VPN should be the key. What's the conceivability of me hosting a server on 3m DSL? with 10 people connecting?

Yes, the file is open almost all day on multiple pcs, and saved frequently. It's a call log so others can see who called who and status.

I was going to suggest google docs, but now I'll suggest that an excel file may not be the best solution to your problem.

Yeah, I'm considering learning SQL and php and web stuff just to make a small site to keep track of things.

Like a mini-phonebook... but.. that could be a complicated answer when I need a simple solution, as I'm known to do.

Anyone ever hear of the Ditto key from Dane-Elec?

That kind of logging should really be a private web based solution using something like SQL as the backend.
