I think I'm slowly figuring out a team. I've got Mai and Hwa and enjoy playing as both of them and am experimenting with others. I like K''s design but he doesn't feel right to me. I like Ryo a lot but can't really figure out any combos with him, I'll have to hit up mission mode to see what I can see. Ash was fun but he doesn't seem to do a whole lot of damage. I got Vice on a random select and she seems really cool so I might give her a shot next.
Now if only I had time to practice this beautiful, beautiful game... this... King.. of fighters.

Vice is fantastic. Her command grab does decent damage, has impressive range (especially EX, which has a range like Abel's grabs in SF4), and gives you a huge amount of time to set up a big mixup afterward. She also has a fast chainable cr.B that can end with cancelling into a safe special that has a damaging followup, cancelling into a command grab (even after three kicks you can hit with EX Gorefest!), or cancelling into her pounce command grab as a nasty surprise. Her long-range grab that does no damage but pulls you in combos into cr.B when you use the EX version, and combos into her Gorefest command grab when you use the normal version (kind of a tight link but not too bad). And she's fast, and her hop is much improved from previous versions of the character, apparently (with hop C being her best ground pressure tactic).
Best of all she has a big section on the SRK KOFXIII guide, because she was fairly popular in previous games and has been explored a fair amount already.
Vice is so rad. Gonna main her, I think. I was considering mature but the short range on her normals to confirm into the rekka really bothers me. I still like her enough that I might just play team yagami.
GGs Blaze. Sorry for not chatting, the wife and dogs are in bed. Sorry to jump off so quick too but I gotta get to bed.
Thanks for the games! Gotta spend some more time practicing but I feel like I'm getting a better idea of who I like to play. Mai is definitely on my team, Ash is kind of a maybe, Iori is pretty cool, and I still like Ryo. Hwa is solid too, I just gotta learn how to use him
According to ATLUS and developer SNK PLAYMORE, the patch will seek to make the game's network infrastructure more consistent for users, ensuring that the evaluation given connections is more accurate to the actual play experience. Moreover, the patch will introduce ranked host-side filtering, eliminating the frustration of match hosts unable to avoid matches with players with poor connections. In addition to a number of other improvements, the update will also address a number of rare glitches reported since the game's release. No release date currently exists for the update, but ATLUS reports that the developer is making every effort to release the patch as soon as possible.
I haven't made any progression with my team whatsoever; after unlocking a few icons I've become obsessed with the designs, and what time I've set aside for KoF has been spent doing every character's trials or running through Time Attack.
So, how the fuck do you unlock Saiki? He's all that's left for me (unsurprisingly), and I've heard multiple theories as to how to unlock him. One being a minimum number of points by match five (I think 2.5 million), another being an average of 5 target actions for matches 1, 2, and 3, and finally, one that said you needed to do an average fifteen target actions.
I'm reeaaallly hoping it's not that last. Sure, target actions get you points, but you can get more points just by beating a match, unharmed, as fast as possible--while to get the most target actions, you'd actually want to die as much as possible without losing to get the greatest number of action opportunities (since it resets each time).
Anyone know?
EDIT: Also, Rex Dart, hilarious and classy as usually, great read. Just wish he'd done Mai, King, and some of the others.
I don't know if it's been confirmed by anyone, but I believe it's simply a point requirement. Try to beat the first three battles without losing any rounds and doing as many target actions as possible. It shouldn't be hard to get 5 target actions per round, and one match will take you three rounds if you don't lose, so that's where the "15 target actions" thing comes from.
But I think the target actions just make it easier. If you're fast enough and are pulling out some great combos, you might be able to meet Saiki without them.
Edit: The point requirement I heard was 2 million by the end of the third match.

Hmm, I see. The guy on gamefaqs mentioned "15 x 3 = 45"--it's gamefaqs, then again, and I hope he was way off base.
On easy, with the timer set to 99 and on easy, I got SS ranks on the first three matches, no problem, with Mature, Vice and Iori (but the whole game, up to Dark Ash, was just fighting as Mature). But I think I fell well underneath 2 million points regardless, which is probably why I just ended up fighting Billy and than Ash after the 6th. *grumble grumble grumble*
Given that Drive Cancels, even with Iori, are way too time and hit-consuming to get you any points (all they do is unlock the next target action), I guess I should try with someone I play with regularly. At least I was finally able to get the Team Yagami ending.
EDIT: Weirdly, the wiki suggests that to get Saiki on the consoles, you just have to fight in arcade with Billy on your team (here). I know I've heard this elsewhere, but trying it out just seemed to get me another fight with Billy again.
Do about three to four target actions to fill up your HD and Super bar.
HD combo into DM into Neo Max.
I did this in five rounds of the first three matches and got him.
Mostly because Max Cancels and Neo Maxes (not to mention Max Finishes) net you a lot of points.
Well, I've pretty ruled out drive cancels. I don't get those even in practice mode, much less when things are actually moving or whatever. I've been doing a lot of desperation finishes (since Yuri's is really easy to do). FOr me, cancels are not honestly not worth the trouble, if what I've seen about point awards on Youtube is correct. I just get killed trying to pull them off, which is surefire way not to get points.
I wonder if it's how many points you finish the third battle with, or how many you have (including the post-fight bonus). I had 2.3 million including the post fight bonuses by the end of the third match and ended up fighting...Billy, and then Ash after the 6th.
Maybe it's actually 2.5 million. Arg.

So I just got a ps3 for xmas, and picked this up yesterday.
I have barely touched kof ever, mostly a gg / bb 2d player. Need to figure this out.
Also any dudes I can get involved with on ps3 for games sometime?
I was actually under the impression that more people in this thread were playing it on PSN than XBL. I want to say a few pages back, there was a list of account names.
Side note, pretty sure fighting Saiki has nothing to do with scoring 2 million points by the end of the third fight, or 2.5 million by the end of the six fight, before the second "challenger" encounter. Mostly since I've done both repeatedly and you always fight Billy, followed by Ash.
Guessing it has to do with 5 target actions per round. Now the question is if Saiki shows up in the third round or in the sixth one. It's weird that of everyone who describes fighting Saiki as a challenger, no one ever nemtions when.
EDIT: Woof, finally, got 'im--took 52 actions by the third round. Weirdly, all the matches took more than three rounds, since I killed myself off to reset the set, so I guess it doesn't go by averages. Much appreciated.
More relevantly, it does seem like the recent update (not that recent) did improve netcode somewhat--I was lucky enough to have mangable matches beforehand, so I guess it'll be not as much an improvement.

Most of them are corner only though. However, I have come up with all of them myself, so I feel good about them.

or after f+A you can hit level 2 Negative edge for a shit ton of damage
I love Vice : ))
but Duo kinda sucks
Some more good stuff.
A quick guide that goes over the system stuff. There might be some stuff you didn't know in there.

Also, how do you rapid fire those light kicks so fast?
Back in the HDR days someone accused me of using turbo. I just laughed.

Though I miss Mary as well.
Its funny how all my favorite character (Kyo, K', Kula) are all considered good but hard to use.
that basically sums up ash as a character in general, all throughout this particular arc of the KoF story

well it's over now
but there was someone putting in some serious work with chin

Absolutely. SoCal was the only area really playing XIII competitively pre-console. They have their stuff together, as it were.
I disagree. Kyo is hard work. Kula and K' are easy street. And I play Kula.
Whatever the case, I'll probably need to pony up and buy them. I like Kyo more than Iori at least.

a spot of info on that netcode patch

Really good read. Nicely shows off why this game looks amazing.
I'm going to be offline until the New Year, so I won't be able to get EX Kyo, or fight anyone, for a while. Alas!
