None of the hardware specs are even close to confirmed. If you believe very questionable leaks from third party developers and the general rumor floating around then yeah, it's using some sort of modified version of the Tegra, but who knows.
E3 will probably give us a few tech demo-y games to look at.
No, I take all rumors like this with a grain (bucket) of salt, especially when it comes to Nintendo leaks.
We'll see though, E3 will be the place we would learn of any of this stuff.
Wedbush Morgan analysts Michael Pachter has told CVG that the just-announced Nintendo 3DS will need to have more of a "breakthough in gameplay" than just a 3D display - otherwise other firms like Apple will simply mimic it.
Pachter mused over how Nintendo might achieve 3D without the use of glasses. "I don't understand the technology behind a 3D display that doesn't require glasses. If it's so easy to do, why would Samsung put out 3D HDTVs that require glasses? My guess is that Nintendo has figured something out that is either very cool and advanced, or is a gimmick, and until I see it, I really won't know."
Pachter went on to comment: "What's interesting to me is that Nintendo is so bold. It seems that if 3D on portable devices was easy, Apple would have beat them to it. If they truly pioneer a technology, my guess is that Apple will mimic the technology. Without a real breakthrough in game play (as happened with the DS), I'm not sure that this device will do much more than serve as a replacement for current DS owners."
What do you reckon, readers? Is 3D enough to get you excited for a new (probably more powerful - considering it's confirmed to be the "successor" to) DS?
Nintendo this morning revealed the 3DS which it plans to release by the end of March 2011. Which is excitingly soon, by the way.
...well, everyone else is obsessing about 3D, so why not Nintendo, I'm guessing the thinking goes.
We may scoff, but 3D movies are generating impressive box office figures and early sales of 3DTVs are better than expected.
And Pachter, you dumbass, 3D works without glasses if you put yourself in the right position. With TVs, that's currently impossible to do for more than one person. With a portable console, you just have one person to worry about.
Man this still feels out of left field so much since the XL is launching right now in America and all.
This the end of Nintendo's fiscal year, and if they are posting any losses or declining growth, this is something to point to for their investors. And they didn't announce it officially enough that the general public should take notice and wreck DSi XL sales (not that it will be a huge success anyway).
There is also a big next gen Pokemon reveal slated for a Japanese magazine next month. It's better to leak important info yourself than let some magazine do it.
Man this still feels out of left field so much since the XL is launching right now in America and all.
Meh, it's right in line with how Nintendo has always handled their handhelds.
They release the main system (aka gameboy) then release several updates (aka gameboy pocket, Gameboy color) right before announcing the official next generation handheld (aka Gameboy advance).
This has always been Nintendo's sequence of events.
With the crazy amounts the DS still sells, I'm guessing Nintendo are not expecting the XL to be a gangbuster seller except to those who feel the DS/DSi are too small. (If I hadn't of bought into the DSi at launch I would have waited for the DSXL myself, as I don't like how small the system is..but too late now.)
I thought one of the big problems with 3D without glasses is that you have to sit directly in front of the screen. Which isn't really an issue with a handheld since the screen is always directly in front of you.
Typically this would mean that Nintendo has some neat ideas for games that will utilize 3D. Virtual Boy remakes confirmed? Heh.

This is why Pachter needs to actually think about what he says before he says it sometimes. :?

Also the DS hasn't dropped in value. They can slash the prices of the DS line when the 3DS line comes out. They could also treat the 3DS as the next in the DS line and keep the price where it is.
I'm sure they don't feel a need to keep the DS going after the 3DS is released but they could and profit a whole lot.
And the DSXL is just about having a larger system for those who want it. It doesn't revolutionize the system so there really isn't a reason not to have it be a short lived final version.

It's on the Reuters newswire; I saw in the elevator TV blurb on my way into work today. It's out there, Jerry!
I still can't get jazzed about 3-D, though to be perfectly fair I haven't seen any of the new breed of 3-D (the ones that don't involve those paper red-and-blue glasses).
So the censorship silliness in Australia may finally be coming to an end.
Michael Atkinson, South Australian attorney general, resigned from his position on Sunday. Atkinson has long been considered the roadblock to Mature-rated videogames being sold in the country.
Australia is the only Western democracy without a rating similar to our Mature classification. Atkinson came under fire from gamers for refusing to help create an R18+ rating for videogames; such a move would require a unanimous vote from all classification ministers, and Atkinson has long given the rating a thumbs-down.
That has left gamemakers with two options — bowdlerize games until they are suitable for 15-year-olds, or not release their games in Australia.
In a lengthy response to a letter written in November 2009, Atkinson laid out his case for censorship, saying that the issue “has little traction with my constituents who are more concerned with real-life issues than with home entertainment in imaginary worlds.”
In December the Sega game Aliens vs Predator ran afoul of Australia’s strict videogame censorship when it was denied an MA +15 rating. Rebellion Games CEO Jason Kingsley held his ground, insisting that he wouldn’t cut his game for Australian audiences.
In a move that seems to signal that the OLFC knows that their videogame rating system is broken, the state censors eventually caved, granting the uncut version of Aliens vs Predator the MA +15 label.

Well, his analysis wouldn't be any worse if he just prefaced everything with 'Nintendo Sucks!'. Even if it was about track shoes or something.

We need to go back and dig up a list of everyone saying how 3D will totally never be the next big thing.

I was one of the guilty ones. Appearantly I was wrong. Movie I-Max 3-D ticket sales are very strong, and appearantly the tvs are starting to sell better than I would have guessed.
I'm just a bit surprised that Nintendo grasped so firmly onto a new and budding tech considering they usually avoid unproven tech unless they pioneered it, aka HD.

It is still too expensive and most people do not want to walk around with over-sized glasses just to watch their Soaps. 3D has been the next big thing for decades. It also isn't like Nintendo didn't try 3D in the past. Sadly for them Virtual Boy gave everyone headaches, not to mention neck cramps.
Personally I could care less as I haven't owned a handheld since my Gameboy Color and we have very little information. Should be fun to see Sony's response though. PSP3D with Move (tm) technology here we come!

Well HD is different in that it is relying on the consumer having the technology first. The rate of HD penetration was a lot different when they designed the Wii and having HD would have forced them to compete graphically with Sony and Microsoft. Which they just didn't have the money to do at the time.

Not to mention the cost factor at the time.
Which leads to another point... has handheld 3D tech really become so cheap that Nintendo, a company that likes to make as much profit off hardware from day one as possible, can put it onto a portable gaming device without raising the price too much?

I said it would be the next thing (eventually), but wouldn't be a big thing until it could be done without the use of 3D glasses. As in, with the current tech (glasses), most people would buy it to occasionally watch a show or movie on their TV every now and then. But that it wouldn't become the major way of watching most/all content until it could be done without the need for glasses and/or a way for things not to get messed up at oblique angles.
The fact that Nintendo is touting the ability of the 3DS to do 3D without glasses pretty much goes along with what I was hoping for - 3D without the need for glasses. And fortunately this is a tech that's been around for a long time now; the limiting factor for TVs has been viewing angle, but for a handheld, that's a non-issue.
I've always agreed that 3D viewing of media is inevitable/evolutionary, but my agreement is qualified in that before it becomes the primary viewing method, the tech needs to be refined. A lot. For now, it's just good enough for limited purposes as people are only going to want to wear glasses to watch stuff on occasion, not 100 percent of the time.
Also I love how Pachter says that if 3D on a handheld was easy, then surely Apple would have beat them to it. Certainly it's not possible for Apple to do something after another company. If any company is going to come up with and implement a new tech in their portable device, of course Apple would be the first to do it. It's inconceivable otherwise.

Just think of how useful 3D would be for the iphone and other handheld devices not focused on games.
I've never bought stock before, I hope Zecco opens up my account soon. I wish I had my checkbook with me, I don't know of another place to get the routing numbers and such.
