Hopefully this means the 120GB will drop in price. I could really use a replacement for my 20GB.
The 120gig has been discontinued as far as I can tell.
So, the 250 is the only drive available now?
20gig refurb is still available, and the 60 gig is as well. I'm just glad that MS finally seems to get it in regards to storage solutions and cost.
Get what?
You can buy a 500gb laptop drive for the cost of the 250gig 360 drive. You can get a 1.5 terrabyte 3.5" drive for the same price!
MS hasn't learned anything, except that they can only put out an overpriced piece of hardware for so long, without a pricedrop, before it becomes utterly ridiculous and needs to be replaced by something that's slightly less of a ripoff.

So, according to this, Nintendo is making a 3D version of the DS called 3DS, and it'll come out next March.
*wake up*
*reads stupid hardware rehash*
*yawn*
*go back to bed*
Yeah, Gamecube level graphics on a handheld with 3D and head tracking is pretty dumb heh
I'm just not gonna get hyped up for something like this until I see it.
It's amazing how graphics are a non issue when you talk about the Wii, but I balk at a product that seems to be a simple upgrade bump to a hardware line that has seen a bunch of upgrade bumps lately, and suddenly graphics are a big selling point.
I know that sounds kinda dickish, but it's true. I don't care about the Wii's graphics and neither do anyone who likes the system. It's selling point was the motion control.
Same for the DS. It's selling point was the touch screen.
So the 3DS being basically another DS but just with better graphics and maybe an analog nub isn't gonna turn me on.
It's kinda like the discussion we had a few weeks ago regarding the DSi vs DS. Is it a new line of hardware or a bump up in the existing hardware? Seems like a bump to me. At least in Nintendo's terms. The Wii did something drastically different from the Gamecube. The DS from the Gameboy. I don't think 3D graphics will really change the gameplay.
I don't think the 3DS' 3D ability and it's rate of adoption by consumers will have much bearing on the home console market either. As mentioned, the 3DS works out of the box and only requires a proper viewing angle. 3D at home requires expensive purchases for only a minor upgrade.
The main issue I see with the 3DS is it's price and whether or not the viewing angle isn't ridiculously strict.
Does anyone have an idea as to what the tech is they'll be using?

They have developed about two good games. Only one of them was for the DS.
Nintendo’s 3DS is expected to be the first of three new consoles announced this year, analyst claims
Have you recovered from the shock announcement of Nintendo’s 3DS this morning? Good, because one analyst believes that we should be preparing for the announcement of a further two new consoles in the near future.
Lazard Capital’s Colin Sebastian predicts that Sony will this spring announce a true successor to the PSP. In addition, he foresees the announcement of a proper successor to the Wii before the year is out.
“While 3D games remain on the drawing board and not yet on store shelves, the emergence of new 3D game platforms could breathe more life into the hardware market,” he stated in a report.
“Along with the launch later this year of new motion sensing controllers for the PS3 and Xbox, there are several multiple growth drivers for the industry over the coming one-to-two years with new physical products.
“We expect Sony to announce a new PSP handheld device this spring, and Nintendo is likely to announce an updated console in the coming year, which could also help to reinvigorate the market.”

I think it's different, though. 3D graphics that don't require glasses are worth more than pushing a few polys. Motion control was a more significant advantage, a more significant change to the way we play games, but this is going to be the first truly mass market device that does this. Frankly I'm surprised Apple wasn't the first.
Cube graphics would help a lot too but that's just icing.
And remember that this is backwards compatible with the DSi. That's probably the most important thing - not the backwards compatibility, but the fact that as a real successor with a nice mass market selling point, we should be seeing a lot more devs willing to make games utilizing the cameras, more augmented reality and head tracking combined with the autostereo 3D. I think that's quite significant.
The main issue I see with the 3DS is it's price and whether or not the viewing angle isn't ridiculously strict.
Does anyone have an idea as to what the tech is they'll be using?
There are a lot of quotes and rumors floating around that it's parallax barrier, which would make a lot of sense. And there's a video on the first page of the 3DS thread from a CES showing on new advances in this tech, where viewing angle becomes a non-issue or at least less significant.
I just couldn't care about 3D graphics. They're interesting. They're a nice touch. And if I'm gonna go out to a movie and waste the cash, I might as well make it worth it by getting 3D.
I'm just not that enthusiastic about it and see only hand held, personal devices really taking off with it.
EDIT
I'm not really impressed with the tech in that video. The two techs described as the best at the show required cameras to pay attention specifically to one person.
So I guess in a couple years my wife still can't watch 3D TV with me?
"Oh but you don't have to wear those goofy glasses!"
Quick question: For NPD sales numbers of a console (say 360s), if they state that X units are sold does that mean units sold to consumers or units sold by (say Microsoft) to retailers?

I think it's actual numbers sold. I've seen way too many points in time where we'll see something like "We've shipped 2 million copies!" and then the NPD hits and the number is something like 300K.
Sony routinely talked about the number of PS2's shipped, which was always fairly higher than LTD numbers of NPD sales.

Hm. Basically I need this information for an actual vidja game business purpose. Anyone have a guess where I might find a definitive answer on this issue?

Actually I agree with you, I don't think 3D in the home theater is worthwhile at all yet. Either you need glasses or a very limited, precise viewing angle. That doesn't have anything to do with the 3DS though, which is a single player gaming system.
I guess it's just easy to separate the two mentally and see how one is expensive and cumbersome, the other cheap and attractive. You can like the 3DS without liking the monster TVs.
There is a "Ting" noise at the end of it (1:27). This Ting sounds so incredibly close to the "Ting" noise that Square has been using in their commercials for the past 4 years or so.
New PSP? Eh, quite possible. Their competition has made their move and the PSP is nigh-on dead here, so I wouldn't be surprised.
New Wii, though? Is this guy buying into the Wii HD thing? Did anyone notice when the Wii sold three million units in December?
Actually I think a PSP sequel is very much in the works.
The PSP is basically dead in the US, the PSP Go didn't do much of anything.
Lets get a brand new one on the market and start over.
That sounds like the traditional business plan 'throwing good money after bad'. How exactly do you start over with a system that didn't catch on in one of the two most important gaming markets? Especially after a reboot that crashed?
Where do they go? Two nubs? The return of inserted media? A camera? A built-in cell phone?
I'd be hard pressed to see how anything the PSP2 might do would change the last five or so years of dwindling sales and just plain poor choices.

Generally, anything from the NPD is actual sales numbers, sold to consumers. If it's a press release from a company, it tends to be units shipped, and they often make that distinction clear in their writing.

What are the applications of handheld 3D? I agree that home theater is clunky, but on the other hand the idea of 3D in a DS screen doesn't intuitively do anything for me either, for different reasons. It seems to lose the immersion/wow advantage that a monster TV or theater screen offers with the technology.
DS and PSP need to allow you to connect them to you Wii/PS3 and then not only play it in full screen on your home tv, but play using the Wii/PS3 controller. I would pay a serious premium for this option. PSP/PS3 is almost there, but you can't full screen it and can't use the Dual shock.

I'm not convinced the 3DS is going to be as cheap as some hope it will. New tech comes with a new tech tax and it's going to have more movable parts included with the hardware.

A competitive price point.
Seriously, I love the PSP more than the DS, and it's not even close. However, let's be real, the DS is king. You can't charge more than the most popular model and somehow think you're going to take away their market share. Secondly they need to push and expand upon the PSP/PS3 compatibility, this is where they are ahead of the Nintendo big time. They can take it further, being able to buy first party psp games cheaper off of PSN, exclusive games off the PS3, buy a PS3 game get $10 coupon to the PSP store, cross system unlocks for games on both systems, etc.

Then why launch a PSP2? They just released the insanely overpriced and somewhat underfeatured Go. Brainiac 8 pretty much hit the nail on the head. It's just 'lolsony' now.
And interconsole connectivity? Ask Nintendo how well that worked out.
Don't take my lack of owning either PSP or PS3 as any indication. I mean, even if MS released a handheld and had a bunch of connectivity between the two, I probably wouldn't even give two shits about it. The mere thought of playing the same basic game on two systems just for some special in-game geegaw sounds wrong. And pointless if I don't even give a damn about playing the 'other' version.

If the rumored tech that Nintendo is using is true, here is a great way of understanding just how it'll work.
I guess it's just easy to separate the two mentally and see how one is expensive and cumbersome, the other cheap and attractive. You can like the 3DS without liking the monster TVs.
I'm not convinced the 3DS is going to be as cheap as some hope it will. New tech comes with a new tech tax and it's going to have more movable parts included with the hardware.
I'm going to predict $200 right now which is still perhaps a bit much. That's a lot less than a $3000 TV + glasses.

200$ is what I'm thinking. Whether or not it's a sweet spot....
It won't be lenticular. It'll use the head tracking technology that was demo'd on the Wii a while back, but instead of using the camera in the Wii remote, it'll use the camera in the hinge of the 3DS.
The PSP Go is awesome, hardware-wise. I absolutely would not pay the going rate for it though. The next iteration should do a few things:
1) include a front facing camera so 3D is a possibility, and it would be fantastic for Skype video calls.
2) add a second analog nub.
3) thicken the system out a bit with a battery that'll last for a day. Go Li-Poly.
4) Enable cross compatibility for PSP titles on PS3, just like PlayStation minis. This should extend backwards to the existing catalog of downloadable PSP titles.
5) Integrate PSN trophies.
6) Launch at $199 or less.
