Macbook pro on fire

When doing anything with my macbook, the thing gets so fucking hot. I have had it for around 3 1/2 years, and its starting to get really bad. Any game I play will have overheating problems with polygons shooting everywhere.

Is there anything that can keep these things cool?

Do you have a laptop mat? Prop the back of it up with something if not. They build some mats with fans to promote air flow, but even my Macbook gets insanely hot when doing anything other than internetting.

I was wondering if those air flow mat things actually worked.

Cus right now its so fucking hot that I can't even pick it up without burning myself. I was also wondering if it was easy or not to take it apart and clean it out.

Are your fans making a lot of noise? They might be getting worn out; my left fan in my MBP was spazzing out until I replaced it.

As for taking it apart, www.ifixit.com has fantastic walkthroughs for getting into your Mac, specific to your model. When I went into mine everything looked OK until I looked at the air-ducts behind the fans - fucking caked with dust.

Anyway, I'm not sure if my laptop is cooler than it was before i went in, cleaned up, and replaced the fan, but at least it's quieter. Do you have smcFanControl? It's a nice little utility that keeps track of the core temperature of your computer and gives you more manual control over your fan speed.

As for the laptop pads I have one and yes it works. I got a Belkin which has a concave groove going across horizontally which (hopefully) your fan intakes sit above, thus ensuring that you always have airflow to your intake. Prior to this my laptop would just sit on my lap/bed/blanket and thereby have no intake.

So my fan generally stays a notch lower now, and if I connect the USB fan in the pad the laptop fan won't even kick on. (Though I generally don't bother because the fan in the pad is kind of fucking loud.)

There are other pads out there that are just flat which I would avoid as they don't do anything to passively help with cooling, they'd require the USB fan to be used.

MacBook Pros don't have any fans on the bottom because that's a terrible design.

That said I think there's something wrong there. I've noticed mine gets a little hot after gaming in windows for a while but I've never found it too hot to touch.

Ironic coming in a thread about said piece of hardware overheating on an internets full of people complaining about said device's heat issues.

There's a great free app called SMC Fan Control that will let you monitor temperature and set fan speed.

Post a rough log of the temps when it is idle / normal usage / heavy usage, and I'll let you know if they're normal or indicative of a fan failing / hardware fault.

Not exactly. I've never seen a top of the line-ish 15" laptop gaming Windows that wasn't way too hot to handle. Mine gets uncomfortable, but never nearly as hot as described by the OP who almost definitely has a laptop with a bad fan in it or something else going on.

On the whole though, even while gaming I can bear to have it on my lap AND I'm not blocking any fans. Fans on the bottom are ridiculous, take any gaming laptop with air flow designed to come in from the bottom and it's going to get a fuck of a lot hotter than a MacBook Pro would, if both of them are sitting flat on a desk with no active cooler underneath.

OP's laptop has some kind of issues, methinks.
