Lifting my truck

I have an 09 Tacoma (4WD crew cab) and in a few years when it's not so new I will be putting it on my family's farm. I would like to lift because it will need to be able to make it through some real mud and have to crawl over pretty large fallen trees. Nothing extreme but definitely some back country roads. Also, I want my truck to be bigger :winky:.

I'm not sure if I should go with a full suspension lift or not. Money is somewhat of a factor here, as is durability. I have heard that risers can crack stuff (wish I could be more specific, I don't know much about trucks). Trucks don't last long on the farm so I would like something that will last. Any tips or suggestions?

    Talk to a mechanic, if you try to do this yourself you could end up with broken body parts.

    A body lift does nothing for suspension clearance or travel. It can let you fit bigger tires, however.

    Pirate4x4 is for people building hardcore buggies and shit. Typical answers involve "fabrication". Try here (googled tacoma forum) http://www.tacomaworld.com/. There's probably links for off-roaders of that model somewhere in there. There's a lot that goes into vehicle suspension, and lifting one can cause all sorts of issues that are specific to the year/make/model.

    If you intend to actually "4 wheel" the truck then you need to get a suspension lift. A body lift is mostly cosmetic, and is actually the better route to go if you just want bigger tires and a lifted look, as it preserves the usually good stock ride. A suspension lift on the other hand will cost you up to 10 times more, and usually result in a much harsher ride. The trade off is that you end up (in most cases) with a very off road capable truck. It sounds like for the application you are describing, you want a suspension lift. It will probably run you about $3000 or more in the USA for a good, durable, non harsh riding lift kit, and then a days worth of labor. You can find kits for cheaper if you look, but where they usually skimp is on the shocks, and you will feel that in the ride.

    If you're really seriously looking at heading into the wild yonder with your truck, look at getting some of these

    It would be a pretty hefty modification though. Hell, you can get a Unimog for not that much money, and Unimogs are real off-road heavy duty military vehicles perfect for a lot of agricultural work.
