3.5mm 5.1 surround sound switch

SparthSparth Registered User regular
Hello guys,

I've been searching the internet for a switch that would allow me to easily change the input to my speakers from my 5.1 surround sound computer to my xbox 360 sound. The only stuff I've found is do it yourself stuff. Does anyone know of a product I can easily purchase?

Thanks!

You probably need adapters or splitters rather than a switch. This RCA to 3.5mm adapter is similar to the one that comes with the 360 VGA cables and allows you to hook your Xbox up to computer speakers. If your speakers only have one 3.5mm input, this splitter is what you need. If your speakers use a different type of connector, just look around Monoprice. They have splitters and adapters for just about anything.

I'm not really looking for a splitter. I'm looking for a switch so I don't have to keep plugging and unplugging cables.

I'm using the adapter above and a cheap KBM switch with audio ports for speakers to switch between the computer and PS3. Unfortunately, that means that they have to be pretty close together, and the computer is on to power it. I don't know how well that would work with surround sound though.

The type of audio cable you're using would be an important factor here.

You mention you have a 5.1 surround? does that mean you're connecting with Optical, Toslink, or Hdmi?

You would not have to keep plugging and unplugging cables. I run my PC and 360 off a set of computer speakers using splitters similar to the ones I linked. I just leave both hooked up all the time. It is no problem.

But yeah, if you are trying to get surround sound or using optical or something more than RCA/3.5mm, you would probably need to shell out for a real receiver.

I was reading up on this a bit. I didn't realize that having a splitter would allow both sources to work simultaneously. My intuition told me this would screw up the sound.

Now I'm just trying to find this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Console-Adapter-Convert-Single/dp/B0006U3ACY/ref=sr_1_44?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1269134313&sr=1-44

somewhere that will ship to Canada ;)

Found a 5.1 surround sound switch on eBay and Etsy by searching for "Logitech 3.5mm 5.1 Surround Sound Switch" also on Amazon by searching for "3.5mm 5.1 Switch" or #B004FSWBYG.
