They replaced an awesome catch phrase with a shitty overabused Kool-Aid in-joke, just because Balrog busts through walls?
I absolutely hate it when localizers do this shit.
I'm inclined to believe that the original dialogue translated more closely to that than an old term that nobody has used seriously since the 50's. I think they went for a more literal translation this time. Either way I was never really a fan of Balrog so that change means pretty much nothing to me.
More accurate or not, anybody working on a project like this should have done their homework enough to know that 'Huzzah!' is a fan favourite line now. Like when the updated translation of FFIV left in the 'Spoony Bard' line. You just don't mess with this shit!
Well one thing that might have been a problem is that that line wasn't originally theirs. "Spoony bard" was always Square's translation, they could do whatever they wanted. Nicalis probably thought it would be in bad taste to just rip off any old translated line, fan favorite or not, so they went through and retranslated everything.
And now they're ripping off Kool-Aid in good taste?
Erich, how bad is the control lag?
Not if that was how the line actually translates more accurately. It might have translated more literally as "Oh yeah!" and they thought they might as well extend it a bit and make a Kool-Aid Man joke. Hell, for all we know the guy that did the original translation might have nearly made the same joke but then decided he'd rather change it entirely. It is kind of a lame joke but people love that pop culture stuff apparently.
Erich, is the lag because of your TV or the game? Because I haven't noticed any lag and I'm up to the Bushlands. Bushlands? Wasn't it Grasslands before? I don't even remember. Is it still Grasslands and I'm just dumb? It's amazing how little I remember because after my 10th run of the game I would just play Hell over and over.
Lork I think your problem is that you're just a busta. 8-)
Did you ever play the original? The controls have always been a little floaty so it might just be that you're not used to it if you've never played before. If you have I don't know, it could be the TV or the game.
Just downloaded this, and having never played this before, the most annoying thing for me so far is that awful sound that plays when dialog is being displayed when characters are conversing. Man is it grating.
What was wrong with the fan translation we already knew and loved? It isn't like they could have been sued for using it, and it would have been a hell of a lot less work.
I don't know how the sound is as screwed up as it is. When they first demoed it years ago the music was just a bunch of screeches with a big 'work in progress' banner over it. How could they still have all these issues?
Well the songs aren't really broken or screwed up, they're just not good. Screwed up was that one Egg Corridor video they had where the music had this really annoying beep or buzz in it. They did screw up the original music though. Apparently it plays 20% faster due to it being 60Hz instead of 50Hz, and so it doesn't loop properly.

Having fun so far though.
Holy shit, you're not kidding! That and the footstep noise to a lesser extent.
I also only lasted about 5 minutes with the new music before I set it to the original music.
So far the game managers to be fun despite these issues.
edit: Heh, just added Cave Story to my backloggery and noticed at least 3 other people added it around the same time on there.

Seriously? Ugh. How bad is it? Is it like some of the ports in the PS2 era where they just recorded the original audio for two or three loops and then fade it out and start over with the song intro again? (What was that, Sonic or Megaman collection...)
I had heard about the 50/60 Hz thing, how Pixel always intended it to be faster, so that's sort of a cool change, except for those who were used to it being slower. Probably the reason some are finding it harder.
Also I request a thread title change to reflect the terrible new translation.
EDIT: I just found this:
Phonetically in english, he says "Doryaaa!!" which I am told has no actual meaning in Japanese, it's just a thing for him to yell.

I think it's just that there's a slight pause before the track loops again. I noticed something was off but I can't exactly remember what. It's not as bad as the Megaman X collection that you're thinking of. What I do remember is that music pauses when you go through a door to load a new area now. It picks up where it faded out though and doesn't restart the whole song. This is really only a problem in the Mimiga Village because the other areas are so large.
Oh and for that picture, I think "Oh yeah!" is an acceptable translation of that, however a yell would be more appropriate I think. I'm no expert though as I'm still learning the language. "Doryaa!" is just like a yell so it could've been anything equivalent to that. Something like "All right!" wouldn't work, but "Hyaaaa!" "Ohhhhh!", or anything else like that would be acceptable. I say those because non-english speakers have an easier time saying those than figuring out how to pronounce the "rya" part if they just literally translated it. That's a line where a translator just picks their brain to find something unique that also works.
Also I'm not sure if the sound effects are different but they're waaay too loud by default, they totally drown out the music. Lowering it to half seems about right. The new music is really offensively bad right off the bat though, the instruments are just horrible.

I'm sticking to the end so I can hear how they fuck up the finale and all the totally fuck off boss fights. Then i'm going old school and not looking back.
I'm pretty sure it does. It's to make it easier for the insane people to do 3 HP Hell runs. You can't be tempted to pick up heart containers if they aren't there!

There are really people who don't find Hell a challenge unless one hit kills you

I've forgotten how much fun the Bubble Gun is. It's technically a secret weapon, so a quick hint. You need Jellyfish Juice in three different fireplaces.
I've played up to the sand zone so far, and the new translation isn't as good as the fan one, unfortunately. I think it's trying to be a lot more faithful to the original Japanese, often at the expense of sounding natural, or making sense.
I hate it when people do this! Like now Yotsuba has been picked up by a new publishing company who are all overjoyed with themselves that they have reinstated -chans and -sans and 'fixed' the name of a carboard box robot from 'Cardbo' to 'Danbo'. I would rather have a new pun name that makes sense to me in English than a Japanese pun with an asterisked footnote! There is more skill and user enjoyment in an effective localisation than a literal translation! Yargh!
Thus ends my Weeaboo against Weeaboo rant.
I know this is a Cave Story thread and not a Yotsuba thread, but fuck yes, do I agree with you on this. The new publishing company isn't ANYWHERE as good as the old one. They pretty much just translate everything literally rather than localize the dialog, and it just doesn't feel as natural.
Now, about Cave Story...
So far, I've only found two annoyances, and they're really minor, in fact one can be fixed right away.
- Sound is WAY too loud compared to music. Set the sound at about half the volume of the music and it's fixed.
- Music doesn't loop properly. There's always a tiny little pause, and it's kind of annoying, but no deal-breaker.
If anyone has been reading this thread and hearing little grievances and complains here and there and wonder if they should still buy the game, YES.
It's Cave Story. It's still Cave Story, and it's still excellent.
Buy it.
Well, I was finishing up another Castlevania: SotN runthrough, but I could pick this up, too. Like others said, I feel like I owe the creator after beating the thing like four times. And having an actual controller should be great! Out of curiosity, what control schemes are available? Can I use the Classic Controller?
And now that we had two big indie hits make it to the consoles (this and Spelunky, okay that one's still to come,) what should be next? I know I said mine several times already on other threads,

, but I'm curious what everyone else thinks.

You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.

There's only one control scheme for the classic controller, but it's pretty much what you'd want it set up to be like. B jumps, Y shoots, L+R switches weapons, (-) for map and (+) for the inventory screen.
I've just got to Monster X in the Laybrinth. I've been playing with the new music on and I have to say it gets better the further in you get. I still prefer the original music but this doesn't feel quite as grating as the first areas did.

So you never bought Braid.

Ah, but there's no need to torture yourself. Just put the settings on Old School.

You can leave the visuals on New if you want. Just change the music to Old. With a vengeance.

That's a fair price.

The new graphics are very similar and just smooth things out a bit so it's a nice addition.
The new translation is pretty unnecessary. It doesn't really add anything.
