Oh God. I know I hate when people did this for their P4 Run, but they are SO BAD at this game. They get lost for 15 minutes in the village, completely skip a health powerup in the corridor, and don't even figure out they can fire up or down until midway through that corridor.

It took them 40 minutes from Start to finish the Egg Corridor. Wow.

You go to the WiiShop channel and download the update from there, I believe. Hopefully they will update it, because I'd like to hear the redone music as intended.

So do I just need to keep my ear firmly pressed against the ground in case an update is headed my way, or does a message pop up if I start the game whilst connected to the internet saying, "Hey, update your game, guy" a la Xbox 360?

That's a good question. Bit.Trip Beat had an update a few months back, but I can't remember if I got a message informing me of that or if I found out some other way.

Also, I enjoyed the Giant Bomb quick look. They seemed to like it a lot in the end. Hell, the first time I ever played Cave Story, I died by stepping on one of those red spikes to the left of the first room.

Ohoho. Heavens no. This is the Wii. The Flintstones had more sophisticated online functionality. If we're lucky Nintendo will send out a message..... but I doubt it. Better get a pillow, cause that ground is awful uncomfortable.

The primary reason I am upset is because these various small problems confirmed my worst fears: this Nicalis guy is not the best person to be put in charge of porting Cave Story to Wii, for a variety of reasons. I don't know how accurate this article is, but it seems to indicate there is some worry about Nicalis in the indie gaming world.

Giant Bomb is SO BAD at a lot of Quick Looks. It gets pretty aggravating. Sometimes they do one after they've played a bit and know what to do, and sometimes it's obvious that everyone in the room is seeing it for the first time.

I wanted to scream when they did the Yakuza 3 demo and never did any HEAT moves, but were commenting on the gauge and the blue flames, and wondering why they were having such a hard time with a boss enemy. You play Yakuza FOR the HEAT moves.

There is no "Nicalis" guy, it's a group of people. Tyrone Rodriguez is the guy you want to blame, if anyone.

Anyway, following links from that post:
Will Night Game see a release before Cave Story? Nintendo noticeably left Cave Story out of its recent list of upcoming spring releases.

TR: No, Night Game is due to be complete after Cave Story. Cave Story is pretty close to complete and we're shooting to wrap up it up really soon, in April. Night Game to follow later in the summer.

This quote is from March 15, 2009. Holy crap. I guess we'll be seeing Night Game sometime next year? Hopefully it won't have screwed up music...

Oh, so did I. I did it again when I tried the Wiiware version. I also made the same early mistakes they did. You know, "Oh, how do I destroy this block? How do I fight enemies? Maybe it's like Mario and you jump on...no, I guess not."

It was the Mimiga village that really got to me. It's like four screens in size! How can TWO people get lost there?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Mind you, you fully heal after defeating Undead Core, so it's just that screen's worth of falling blocks you have to worry about.

Oh that's right, I knew it healed you at some point because the first time I went through I had to have full health for it. I remember redoing the last boss though because I got hit by a rock that spawned right at the doorway or something as I was getting to the spot.

Kupi, if it means anything it's not actually that hard to do if you have the life jar. You can actually practice it in the Sanctuary Run mode until you're good enough to get through with 15 less HP or whatever. People do it with 3 so it's definitely possible.

I have been playing this game again ever since it hit the Wii store, and I've come to a few conclusions.

    1. New music is, indeed, ass. Fortunately, the old music still rocks as hard as it ever did.
    2. New graphics look nice, but I still can't tell the difference between them and the old ones.
    3. This game is once again ADDICTIVE as ever.
    4. I will never, ever, ever get the (super) good ending. That final run is insane.

I'm still impressed at how fantastic the flow, mechanics, and storytelling hold up in this game years later. If anyone out there hasn't bought the game, for the love of Quote at least download the PC/Mac version.

So I came into this thread hoping to rave about this game with the rest of you, and I had to wade through 10 pages of yelling about how broken and shitty this game is before any actual discussion of the game begins. If I hadn't bought this on a whim and instead came here for impressions first, I probably would have been scared away. I hope you guys didn't scare away too many potential buys. It would be great for this to do well. I understand some people love their music, but if a game plays this well, it can have Godsmack as the Soundtrack for all I care.

I had somehow avoided the game all these years, so I came into this fresh, and am loooooving it! Just passed the labyrinth. One thing, though. You press minus to bring up the map, right? That doesn't seem to work for me. I've tried all my remotes and the CC, and I still haven't seen the map screen.

Hey, be careful, because this game has a lot of different endings, and you have to really know them ahead of time to get the best ending and see the real last boss. We're talking some really nonsensical hoops to jump, and it all starts at the end of that Labyrinth. Search GameFAQs very carefully.

We've had players who have gone for years believeing the extremely bad ending is the real ending. D:

    it's hidden in Mimiga Village.

And despite all the whining it's still Cave Story and if you play it with new graphics and old music it's an amazing game. It's just not as much better than the original as people were hoping and really lacks polish in all the stuff Nicalis actually did.

Your first time through probably around 8 hours. After that though you'll get good enough to start speedrunning so it becomes around 3-4 for a full run. It's very replayable though to try and go through and do different stuff, like use different weapons. My favorite thing to do was near the end which only changes a couple of thing.

There aren't really multiple branches leading to the endings or anything, the good ending is an extension of the normal one and you can still see the normal one at that point if you want.

The real branching point of the game is weapon choices:
You can trade the Polar Star for the Machine Gun early on, save it for the Snake a little later, or upgrade it to the Spur closer to the end. You can also trade the Blade for the Nemesis later on.

I'm just terrible at the fast pace of some of the fights. The first boss usually does me in. When I first played the game years ago, I never was able to get much further than immediately after that.

My tactic with the first boss (the Heavy Press,) is to eschew tactics entirely. Point missile launcher up (having raised it to 3 during the level,) spam fire button so he and Curly fire constantly, boost upwards to dodge the rare attack I bother caring about and fire even faster at the boss, watch the life screen for when I have to dodge. This is one of the reasons I do so badly at the sanctuary attack. Again I have to ask what's with missiles and the sanctuary? Why do you get 20 less in boss rush and NONE in the sanctuary attack mode? Or am I just missing them?

I'm doing a hard mode run. So far I've gotten to the cat tank in the labyrinth. The tricks I needed to come up with to avoid being hit have been very cool and made things that much more interesting. Usually I'd just take the 3 damage and be like 'whatever, I can get a heart'.

I also have no problem with the translation, or the music (haven't even noticed looping issues). This game is awesome. I guess I should have turned down the sound effects 'cause they are pretty loud!

One thing I did miss was the mini boss fight in the grasslands house with the one rabid mimiga. I guess it's only triggered by opening a power-up chest.
