bizarre Thunderbird problem - can't type in email body

My mom called me last night to try to explain this problem they are having with Thunderbird. Apparently yesterday, it stopped allowing her to type anything in the body of an email. She's trying to reply to an email and, according to her, it won't let her type. She can edit the address, the subject, but nothing in the body. Occasionally she can write a new email, but it's inconsistent. I'm stumped.
So far I've had her install again over the existing install. I don't want her to uninstall/reinstall without me there. So... any ideas?
edit: oh yeah, this is Win 7 home premium, 64-bit.
