As said, the transition is rough.
During Civil War the Warden of the Cube mind controls Noh-Varr and uses him to hunt down the Young Avengers and Runaways, eventually he breaks free of the control and takes over The Cube, declaring it the capital of the new Kree Empire. SHIELD presumably wrests it from his control later.
The Illuminati confront him via Professor X's telepathy(Except Namor, who simply teleports into the Cube and beats the hell out of him) and each try to show him Earth isn't that bad. Black Bolt shows that the Kree Empire and Earth have a long, friendly history so he was honestly declaring jihad on himself. Reed sympathizes with his view of humanity as a lesser, stupid race but tells him to see the potential they have, as Captain Mar-Vell did before him. Tony Stark basically says We will win if you try to fight, so either you keep acting like a little baby and live in the Cube forever or try to honor the legacy of Kree heroes before him.
Then during Secret Invasion he breaks out and tries to fight the Skrulls, running into Captain Marvel(who was actually a Skrull who THOUGHT he was Captain Marvel) who dies in his arms, telling him to help the humans because they deserve a chance like the Kree had. He dies and then turns into a Skrull freaking the hell out of Noh-Varr. Noh-Varr ends up taking out the bulk of the Skrull army in Manhattan and becomes a war hero.
He joins up with Osborn's Dark Avengers until after sleeping with Moonstone it's revealed to him that all of the other Avengers are murderers and psychopaths, so he bails. The Sentry tries to take him out, but he is able to get away with some help from his future human girlfriend Annie. Then he contacts the Kree Supreme Intelligence who basically says "Yeah you're the new Captain Marvel" and gives him a new set of Nega Bands. For some reason he isn't called Captain Marvel and is just 'The Protector.'
Then he helped out The Avengers with Kang and joined as a member.
Man you say that like there are a ton of superheroes that have themed costumes
It's black and white, clean and sci-fi
considering the dude is an alien, it works
also those girl pajamas are hella trashy and awful
The cowl reminds me of Hydra's. There's no personality to it, so it suggests a generic henchman.
And can you tell the character is an alien by looking at him?
Compare that to the Captain Marvel picture I posted, which is clearly alien, scientifically advanced, and militaristic. It's not cluttered either, but it says much more than Protector (which, really, is a horrible name as well).

I think it has a distinctive sci-fi flair to it
although I do agree the cowl could go
Look at the FIRST Captain Marvel suit
nothing alien about it
He has an alien planet on his chest!
And while I get a henchman vibe from the outfit, that's appropriate given his status as a scout for the Kree Army.
The former's the kind of thing I could really see on a young Spider-Man, though I think the design kind of falls apart once you move past the head and torso. And while a light-up decal on his head would be pretty impractical, I do think it looks cool.
The latter's A) a great piece of artwork a cool, simple suit and C) greatly diminished by the segmented eye-pieces. It does look a bit evil, though. Still, it'd be a cool suit for a new, darker character.
I like Kris Anka's too, the one with the bare toes. But, it's lacking in the spider iconography. With a better spider-symbol, I think it'd look great.

Like Keith, I liked this one the best:
That looks like something Peter Parker would create these days with what's at his disposal, and the addition of a swing bag instead of webbing works well.

It looked best in the back-up in Ms. Marvel 50
This is a better look

Project Rooftop has announced the winners of their Spider-Man contest
The winner is awesome. It really reminds me of Kamen Rider, which is awesome as hell.

My favorites would be this one (although it'd be a better Spider-Boy), and this one (although it'd look better without the laces on the mask)
The former's the kind of thing I could really see on a young Spider-Man, though I think the design kind of falls apart once you move past the head and torso. And while a light-up decal on his head would be pretty impractical, I do think it looks cool.

I don't like the one with the backpack because his eyes are made of butts and he looks like a bike messenger.
And I like the one with the hood, especially for the spider-sense.

I really dug the Spiderboy third prize winner though. That one really works for me.
