i havnt played a pokemon game since Gold version came out all the way back in 2000 (man, 10 years) and i've recently had the urge to play it again. Ive looked at Pokemon Heart Gold for Nintendo DS and saw that IGN gave it an 8.5 out of 10. From what ive gathered, it sounds like it's the same game. Though if it is, i dont know why its getting a 8.5/10.
Advice...
Stick to my original GameBoy Colour Gold version, and save the $69.95
or
purchase the DS Heart Gold?
Is there anything really new to the series thats making it retain the high scores?

It depends what you want to get out of it. If you're only going to play through it for the story and some good old-fashioned single player fun, the GBC version is going to be fine.
If you're interested in battling with others, or trading with people online, or messing around with the new battle mechanics, thats one reason to go with the new one.
I can't really give you a real opinion either way, since I have yet to play either of them, but I am planning on picking up HeartGold at some point.
HeartGold has online battling and trading, and access to the 200-odd new Pokémon that have arrived since G/S/C. Other than that I think it's pretty much the same game, maybe with a couple of new puzzles or so.

I think they redid some of the gym layouts, didn't they? And the story probably has some changes, but the story in pokemon games is :rotate: anyway
I do think it's worth mentioning that HG/SS are really pretty. It's like, the first pokemon game that feels like some effort went into the visual presentation. Still sprites, but they're good sprites.
I'm not sure I would be willing to pay the forty bucks for a new retail copy, but I might pick one up used at some point so I can play with my brother

There's a LOT of little things, especially UI stuff, that even coming from D/P is worth the upgrade. The pokewalker is a real fun bonus.
I paid retail for it and I'm not displeased.
The DS generation of Pokémon has improved music, graphics, UI and tons of new features, as well as being compatible with every other DS Pokémon game (SoulSilver, HeartGold, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum). Considering the Pal Park (where you can import GBA pokémon into your DS games), this generation features all the pokémon. Also, you have WiFi, easy wireless connection for battles and trading, and they're just generally fun little games.
If you have a DS, yes, do get Pokémon Heartgold (or Soulsilver).
I hadn't played Pokémon since Blue (the first gen), and when Diamond and Pearl came out, I got Pearl because of the easy wireless connecting and WiFi modes, and I was hooked into Pokémon all over again.

Well, have you actually checked your GBC version still works? All my Pokemon games back from that era have had the batteries in the little karts crap out and will no longer hold saves.
Oh sh*t, my save file is gone, and I CANT SAVE ANY MORE! I checked my bros game (Silver) and his file save is still there, but the system clock doesnt work any more.
Guess i'll be purchasing the DS game now. This thread may as well be locked.
Cheers for the info fellas.
