International Bartenders Courses, are they worth it?
A question for forumers with experience working in a bar (or even better managing one).
Im looking to get into barwork, but unfortunately I have no experience that would be helpful. Ive seen a few of these courses advertised (this is a good example) which I thought might help me 'get my foot in the door' as it were.
The problem is that these courses carry a fairly hefty price tag, my concern being that I'll end up paying a lot for something that turns out to be of little value in the job marketplace and I'll have wasted my money.
So my question is do they carry any weight with employers?
Thanks.

I can only talk personal experience as I have zero restaurant experience, but if you were to make a venn diagram of my monkeysphere, there is no overlap between the set of people that took a 'bartending course' and the set of people that 'have worked as bartenders'.
It's pretty useless to take these courses, don't waste your money. Restaurants really want experience. you can know how to make every drink ever, but if you can't handle it when the bar is busy, they don't even want to see you. get a job waiting tables or bar-backing. let the management know you are interested in bartending ultimately. You might get lucky and they give you a few slow bartending shifts after you've been there a while. who knows?
It's really hard to judge what you're going to encounter, b/c it will be different at every bar. But the one universal fact is that you need experience to get a bartending job. it sucks, because the only way to get experience is to bartend, but they don't want you without experience!!

HI!!!!
No! It is an awful idea. Waste of money and they'll teach you how to do things in the worst ways possible.
Get a job as a barback or a server where you want to work and move up that way. It's the only real way to do it. I know quite a few people (myself included) who will throw away resumes with "Bartending School" listed on them. Even from people with actual experience.
