My new headset isn't transmitting my voice. (Solved!)

I dunno if it's because it's broken, a piece of garbage or what.

This is what I ordered. I can pick up sound in the speakers just fine kinda, it's irritating that volume control and balance control are on the same switch. I actually have to have the volume up louder than I want it to or I only hear out of my right side. I can just turn down the volume on my computer I guess.

My mic however isn't transmitting anything at all. It's supposed to sit at the corner of my mouth, and it's doing that now but I'm in vent right now and a friend can't hear anything I'm saying. I wanted to assume it was my computer's fault but I can't adjust anything.

I didn't take this screen shot, but this is basically what I see when I try to adjust my settings, aside from stereo mix. I don't have that selected so it doesn't show up.

mictj2.jpg

I can't seem to adjust my volume settings in Realtek either. Nothing is muted, but I can't move the sliders up and down to adjust anything.

EDIT: If it matters, my old headset, which has exposed copper wires on it now, plugged into a usb port.
This new ones plug into jacks. And yes they are in the right locations. It doesn't seem to make a difference if it's in the jacks in the back or on the front of my computer either.

I don't know that is really the problem or not, but it was the first thing I jumped to. Is my headset garbage?

I believe under your sound devices in the windows control panel (not any driver software panel) that you must select a device as a playback device and as a communications device, so just check and see if your motherboard is set for playback and communications (this could be the problem since usb devices show up as their own entity in sound devices).

I'm really slow at technical stuff like this. How do I check if my motherboard can support it? I could be staring it in the face but I wouldn't know what to look for.

The only options available in my sound settings are Realtek HD Audio Output and Input respectively as well as "Modem #0 Line Playback/Record" Both of them were already selected to the Realtek option.

What's your version of Windows? And I assume you are just using the motherboard for sound.

Edit: Duh, XP. So if you go Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio Tab and Voice Tab, they're all set for Realtek HD?

XP. Assume away, I don't know enough to tell you if you're wrong.

I had to unplug my speakers to plug in this headset in the back which is where it is now for no reason other than I don't like playing with wires more than I need to. I tried the front but there was no difference.

    Two questions:

    1. What version of windows are you using?
    2. There is no 2nd question, I just need to know what menu to send you to

I have the same headset and while it works well for the price the mic sensitivity is not very good. There's an option to boost the mic sensitivity under windows control panel (sounds and audio devices on XP, can't remember for the life of me what it is in vista/7) that solves the issue for me.

The option on XP is better, just so you know - it's a lovely sliding bar that lets you fine tune the mic. On vista it's just a crummy checkbox that says something along the lines of 'mic boost +20dB'.

If none of this works...I dunno what to tell you. Did you make sure to toggle the little switch on the side of the volume controller to 'unmute'?

EDIT: samsam beat me to it

No I even checked to make sure that for some reason the mute and unmuted symbols weren't mixed up.

It's XP. I can't move those sliders in my sound settings in the control panel. I don't know why. They're grayed out. I'm quiet when I talk because the walls are thin and I get yelled at so this is wonderful news!

He also said that the sound was not working too great. Were your previous speakers working correctly before? If all he did was a swap, then the headset speakers at the least shouldn't be giving him any issues assuming that little inline dongle is set correctly.

Aside from seeing if Audio & Voice tabs are all set to Realtek HD, there should be a 'volume' button under the 'Sound recording' or 'Voice recording' options depending on which tab your in. Hit it and see if your volume is high enough. Also I think 'Mic volume' has to be checked.

Yeah the volume on my speakers are fine. They're pretty nice actually! I just swapped them to see if the jacks on one side of the computer made a difference to the other side.
The sound is a problem with the headset only. The controls for volume and balance is the same thing, so I have to turn it up loud or else I can only hear out of my right side. The control itself is on the wire of my headset.

I only use my headset when I'm talking anyways.

Although it really doesn't matter, I'm not a he.

    It doesn't matter.

I can't move those sliders. I really wish I could! The option isn't there. They're forever stuck at 4/5ths of the way up. That picture in the op is exactly what I see, they're all grayed out. I can't do anything with them.

EDIT: And, it's exactly the same deal in the Realtek HD Audio Manager.

The only other thing I can think of to try is changing the mic sensitivity settings in ventrilo. If that doesn't work then it's probably time for a refund or exchange.

Wait, so it worked with steam's voice chat system but not with ventrilo?

No. The settings are fine. My mic just doesn't work period.

And by that I mean the settings are what they're supposed to be, but I have no idea if there is something wrong with how my computer is recognizing my headset or if it's the headset itself.

Reading some Amazon reviews, it looks like those headsets die fairly quickly anyways or at least require jiggling dials and jacks and what not to get the sound working correctly.

Here is the original thread where your image came from, they have a few suggestions:

Gotcha. If that's the case then it sounds like you probably just got a bad headset that needs some good RMA action. I'm only an armchair expert, though, so take my words with a generous helping of salt.

Yeah, I asked a friend and he sent me there.

I guess I'll just plug in the mic jack into the pink port then? Most of what they're saying I can't understand at all, they're using too many acronyms.

I'll have to take a look at that thread again when I'm not so frustrated, I got a lot more problems than this but that don't necessarily warrant making a thread about.

I checked again. When I first plugged in the jacks, I stuck them in the appropriately color coded holes. I also have two pink jacks on the side of my computer so I had to match up some symbols.

Trying the other jack just feels like I'm forcing a square block into a triangle hole so I'm not doing that.

On your ventrilo setup, what are the options for your input device

    Default DirectSound Device
    Realtek HD Audio Input
    Modem #0 Line Record (emulated)

FYI I can't talk in steam chat either, I was in TF2 and no one could hear me.

I don't see an advanced button under my microphone settings. It looks like this. Stereo mix has always been muted, even when I was using my old headset. Everything was working just fine then.

    3-1.jpg

Also talking to someone else and he asked me to post these two images. I'm counting to 8 in both of these images. In the first one I'm holding the mic as close to my mouth as I can, the second one I'm not touching the mic at all but leaving it where it's supposed to be sitting.

EDIT: The numbers are roughly the same regardless if I use Realtek or Default DirectSound Device.

I recorded myself in that little recording program in accessories. I'm loud and clear. Probably should have done this first but I still don't understand why no one can hear me in vent or when I'm in TF2. I'm also being helped outside of this thread for this problem and he's working with me about vent.

Well that's good to know. Sound recorder probably kicked your OS in the pants to let it know that you had a mic again.
