A preliminary autopsy states that a woman died of "water intoxication" following a water drinking contest for a Nintendo Wii.

    I didn't even know it was possible to die from drinking too much water.

    Yep, it has something to do with your salt levels. If they get too low, you're in the danger zone.

    Some of the signs of water intoxication are actually similar to dehydration, so its possible to make the situation worse by believing you are dehydrated and consuming more.

    Ever see a marathon runner drop to the ground and vomit? Possibly water intoxication from over hydrating in preparation of the race.

    the only reason i wasn't too surprised was because fo osmosis

    you can die injecting water into your veins, makes blood cells explode (as far as i know)

    i would assume it has something to do with that, along those lines

    or the salt thing

    It's actually similar to drowning.

    When you inhale water, your lungs will put it into the blood that's being oxygenated which returns to your heart and is sent throughout your body. As you said, your blood cells are destroyed, and you die from lack of oxygen.

    edit: it should be noted this is why if you read bottled water labels they contain sodium. Tap water, to my understanding, does not or it would deteriorate the integrity of the pipes in which it flows.
