So most of what I've heard about this game is people hating on it...but I have to say, I'm absolutely loving it so far. I was kind of tired of the same old same old FF formula and this feels really refreshing and modern and fun. I just finished Chapter Two, so maybe I'll change my mind with time, but right now I'm definitely impressed. The battle system is a lot of fun (though I'm ready to have more than an attack or two with each character), the story seems alright, and I like the flow of the game a lot so far.
It's not the only point. There are still plenty of missions that were not possible to do prior to the post-game boards, as well as 5 starring them all if you like.
To some people there is joy in maxing out their characters even if challenges are long since past.
There's always going to be people who like to do things like get a master materia of every type for every character in VII, reset the sphere board in X for maximum stats, learn every single skill for everyone in IX, etc etc. Just for the sake of doing it.
It's just something to do; but it it certainly isn't for everyone.
I do not understand the completionist attitude. I mean, I guess having 100% means you've mastered every challenge the game has, but people's reports of grinding for the missions make me hesitant to even want to do so.
And "maxing out" your characters generally just trivializes the content and requires hours of repetitive fighting. That's two losses! And for what? The satisfaction of having a bigger number?
I'm far more entertained by gameplay that is challenging and tactically rewarded. "This is all you have, make it work." Something thick with opportunity costs too. Breath of Death is one of the best examples of this. Every time you level up, you have to choose between two bonuses, and you can NEVER get the other one. It means your choices actually mean something.
Does the Belladonna Wand increase the chance of death sticking? I think that's the one with the increased debuff hit %.
Supposedly it does not.
However, fully debuffing the target does increase the chances that Death will land, and significantly so. The base chance is 1%, and you get an additional percentage point for each debuff on the target.
If I did not enjoy the endgame grind, I would not have done it. I do like seeing how far I can take my chars. I mean hell, I wanted to see how fast I could down a turtle. It was nice seeing the time go lower and lower.
When I first played FF6, I played the fuck out of it and got everything in that game. With no outside help and shit (except for getting Gogo, that I would not have figured out on my own).
You can beat Neochu without death, someone here did it, just look through the thread and see if you can find who said it then ask them.
I did it with Random: Instant Chain.
It's still luck-based, but at least it isn't as boring as spamming Death.
As for the FFX talk, the plot is not nearly as convoluted as you guys are making it out to be. Of course it sounds confusing when you throw around phrases like "cold war with the dead" that make no sense.
Pre-Game Order of Events:
1) Zanarkand is losing a war to Bevelle.
2) In order to protect their legacy they sacrifice themselves to summon Dream Zanarkand and it's protector - Sin.
3) Sin defeats Bevelle.
4) Yunalesca "defeats" Sin by sacrificing her husband.
5) She tricks the people of Bevelle into thinking that if they revere Yevon and perform the pilgrimage that they'll be all right.
6) This reverence turns into a religion.
7) People perform the pilgrimage because their religion tells them too.
8) Seymour gets treated like shit and decides that existence is overrated. (See Kefka)

more than that, yu yevon personally told yunalesca about how to quiet sin for a while
so he basically ensured that the world would have a cultural barrier against ever trying to find a way to permanently kill sin
the problem with FFX's plot is that you learn virtually nothing about sin's real origins until the very end, and even then, the info you do get is painfully skimpy

I remember being near the end and getting the skimpy reveals and being all "ooooh...wait so why the fuck am I here and what was the point of...OH SHIT BOSS FIGHT!"
I read about how he was an asshole, and I took him down in like 30 seconds. But now that I know I'll have to fight him again, I'm not so proud (get it?) of myself.

I personally found the first one harder for whatever reason.
If you wasted it that fast you probably won't find the second one to be too terribly difficult.

Yeah, both times weren't that bad. I psyched myself out of it and ended up with fewer stars than I could have gotten, but it was still easy.
I have arrived (in Chapter 11)! After putting this game down for a little, I got back into it and powered through a few chapters. I found the Chapter 9 boss to be annoyingly tedious and he killed me several times due to my unluckiness or general lack of being prepared. Anyway, I here this is where the game gets really fun (not that I thought it wasn't already). Looking forward to it.
The OP mentions using 36 items (say them Sturdy Bones) then one synthetic material to upgrade your weapon. Now that I've actually tried upgrading and realized how it works, how does this break down, exactly?
Am I putting in 36 bones all at once, then some item, to level it up once? And keep doing that until it reaches max level? So that'd mean I'd need 36 bones x however many levels the weapon has, right?

Ideally you only need to do it once per upgrade.
You should plan ahead and make sure you have enough XP type parts (like the reactor etc) to get the amount of XP you need to star the weapon/accessory with 3x XP.
So lets say (this is totally made up) you need 1,000,000 XP to level up X Sword. And lets say the Ultracompact Reactor gives 20,000 XP base for that upgrade level (items change xp values depending on the type of item and the upgrade tier). So with 3x XP you'll get 60,000 per reactor. 1mil/60k = 16.66 so you will need 17 reactors to star it.
So you'll buy 36 sturdy bones (there's a couple that for sure give 3x at 36 but that's the standard), and 17 reactors.
Go to the upgrade menu, use the 36 bones first and then use all 17 reactors at one time. You'll get the 3x for every single one and that will star the weapon.
Once it is starred it's either done (for ulitmates) or you can upgrade and do it over again. Upgrading resets the xp multiplier and various xp items reduce it too if you use them individually instead of all at once.
So you want to aim for efficiency when doing it to save time and gil. Though honestly at that point 36 sturdy bones is the least of your cost concerns.
EDIT: you just really never want to waste a 50k gil xp item on anything that isn't 3x XP; you'd just be throwing money away. If you're doing an accessory and that's overkill you should check the xp value of cheaper items and see if you can 3x a cheaper item and get the same goal and save gil. You need so much money to get everything if you're seeking minimum the treasure hunter achievement/trophy that you can't afford to waste gil on overkill on your items XP.
I generally use the random enemy drop xp items for accessories since their requirements are typically way lower than weapons and i had an assload by post-game.

Ah, I see. Thank you very much for the explanation.
Is there some place that lists how much XP they require to star, before you need a catalyst to transform them? For example, I'm trying to get Vanille's Belladonna Wand to Marlboro Wand- is there somewhere that tells me how much total XP the Belladonna requires before becoming starred so I can transform it?

I used this faq to find out what materials to use that are the cheapest and will list the cost of doing so.
Just search for the weapon name and it will tell you how many mechanical items to buy after using 36 sturdy bones/oozes/tails in order to max the weapon.
In this case for the Belladonna Wand use 2 Particle Accelerators after using 36 bones.
EDIT: Further clarification. It's being looked into. But I bet there might be a formal announcement soon. Like E3 soon.
Oh man I hope that comes true as I don't own a PS3.
Same here, and while I know the plot will be shit it will probably be fun as hell to play.
Plus all the glorious fanboy tears
It would be a nice opportunity. I own both, but I really prefer the feel of the controller of one to another. And with these games pretty easily hitting the 70 or 80 hours per play through mark, controller comfort is important.
is there a spot where you can make money to buy all this stuff? I think I'm on chapter 9 and I have made crap for gil so I can't imagine buying all these sturdy bones and such.

only thing i know about versus so far is that all the characters have particularly retarded names and surprisingly normal outfits
i dunno, those clothes seem almost like a new gimmick in itself
like, "Final Fantasy Versus: You Could Actually Buy These Outfits At a Store, Holy Shit"
To be fair, that was true about at least half the cast of FFVII. More if you include the antagonists.
