Guys guys guys, you know that little ledge on the upper right defense spawn of Badwater Basin? I somehow managed to get an offensive sentry up there, to level 2.
Twice.
Granted it was on a pub, but oh lordy.
i don't really know the spot you are describing, but i am proud nonetheless

So uh, how does one go about doing this idling thing that incites so much hatless rage in the less fortunate? Or is that one of those things you don't talk about? like how to steal games off the internet.

I wrote a guide awhile back. It's a little out of date though. Linky
New things to note:
1. There's a belief that Valve has made it so drops are severely decreased on maps specifically called "achievement_idle.bsp" Maps called stuff like "achievement_idle_blah.bsp" or whatever still seem to work.
2. There's a pretty cool idling program available that will do things like
-Automatically downgrade all your graphics and run TF2 in a tiny window, then restore the settings when you're done idling
-Reconnect to the server when you get disconnected
-relaunch TF2 when the game crashes.
Available at http://www.sourceop.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2292 and none of the idlers on that forum seem to have had issues with it. You'll still need to watch out for getting disconnects with the item server though, as that program can't detect it.

so no special plugin or doohickey required? sweet, thanks.
in other news I got a new dead ringer for the one I accidentally smelted way back when
Now I just need a new Backbiter's Billycock to replace the one I smelted on purpose to make a respectless rubber glove.
Imagine if you downloaded a trojan and lost your Steam account trying to get some dumb shit hats in a video game. Not saying it is, just saying running unknown programs on your computer to get some imaginary video game headgear that doesn't actually do anything seems pretty stupid.

As I said, the Source Tools program is used by a lot of people for a long time. There's been no complaints of it containing a trojan.
EDIT: Also, you don't need to download it to idle. It just makes you not have to worry about getting disconnected in the middle of the night or something.

I might check this idle program out for shits and giggles tonight, but how do you have it connect to a passworded server? I'd like to hop on the PA idle server but can't figure out how to make this program connect to a passworded server.

I never did figure that out.

From what it looks like you may have to save the IP like this in the serverlist for sourcetools
192.IP.ADDRESS:27015;password thisisthepassword
EDIT: Looks like the password was right, I got in after it ran through the server list again. So that's how you do it!

You know how there's two spawns for defense on Badwater Basin? One on top and one on the bottom, and on top there's two exits, one to the left and one to the right? And how if you exit the right, there's this raised platform with a half ammo box and I think a health vial that nobody takes because fuck why not just walk a little farther for the resupply cabinet? I built up there.

OH.
for some reason I assumed you were on defense and what you meant by "offensive sentry" was that you were putting it very forward instead of back near the point. that is a HILARIOUS spot for offense to put a sentry.
I almost never play engineer on defense. I really only do it when it is particularly exciting and game changing, like on the first point of goldrush, where you can dispenser jump into that upper shack area to hold it down.
But who knows, I've started playing regular uber medic again and am starting to find it enjoyable again, so anything can happen. Maybe I'll even start playing sniper and scout! Two years of playing and I think I have less than 20 hours in those classes.
I've been idling' since beta. I just wanted hats so badly I didn't care they didn't exist yet.
Also I must have played like 8 hours this weekend, not that you can tell because when you check my steam account all you see is, "13,351,639 HOURS OF TUFTOO PLAYED THESE PAST TWO WEEKS".
I believe it is. They mentioned modifying the misc items to be craftable just like hats, so...
The best time to craft spy hats was before the last update unfortunately.
Edit: I stopped crafting class specific hats when my first crafted hat was a duplicate. Now I just keep crafting as soon as I get three metal, trying for the modest pile of hat. And getting trade fodder.
Thats my plan as well, and mostly because getting the extra metal for class specific takes forever. I just dont idle enough like you Wally, I want to, but I just cant do it.
I was planning on crafting either a heavy or pyro hat as soon as I got 4 refined, but at the moment I don't play either of those classes enough to warrant getting a hat for either. I think I'm going to wait for the next hat additions.
I've been wanting to put together an offensive engi frag video for the longest time, but I always forgot to record demos (I record them automatically now though, so I can't use that excuse anymore) and I'm too lazy to go through them and even lazier to format them into an enjoyable video.
My plan was to make a video called "Lucksman" and make a video of a ton of skill shots (ones where I'm not just shooting randomly down corridors,) with some really crazy leading shots. Then at the end put a montage of lucky spin shots and corridor stuff.
The problem with a video like that though, is that most of my kills I don't actually see. I shoot, duck back behind my corner, and watch for the kill icon.

if you wanted to be super pro you could do that demo smoothing thing and follow the arrow in flight to the target to get around that problem
would probably get old after the first 10 or 15 kills though

If you really wanted, you can edit your demos so as soon as you take the shot, the camera pans to a point of view that covers the arrow shot or follows the arrow, but it seems like a lot of work, and it would be a lot easier if demos actually rendered your body, because then you could just do your crap from a third person perspective.

Which is my first duplicate hat. Whaa whaa whaa whaaaa.
"...only mights and maybes."
Leave it running in the background. I usually idle at night while I'm sleeping or when I go to work.

I was right about to craft one but was gripped with a horrible vision of this happening.

Oh snap, I think I may have a demo of my ridonkulus engi pubbing last night.
[tiny]Because it's so few good spots in between all the suck. Heh. Aww.. Now I'm sad.[/tiny]

gettin slower
I hate when people do that. You can't read those goddamn tiny words. It's a pain to quote, copypaste, or zoom in to read.
Stop that.
copy paste into address bar or something similar
bam
thats usually what i do
that, or i highlight and right click and chrome says "Search Google for [whatever is highlighted in quotes]?"
That's what I do! Search Crash's post right now. It's depressing.
