I guess this is a bit of a general tech support question as much as it is a plea to save his gaming career from missing this gem.
I loved Mass Effect 2, it was easily shoved into my top three Single-Player games of all time for how much fun it was and how easy the characters were to understand and relate to.
My friend is also a gaming fan, loves space, rpgs, Bioware games, Baldurs Gate fanboy etc. I figured I was being the good guy getting him to acquire this game. I was over at his house when we installed it. We played it for a few hours (Right up to the point where you FIRST get onto the Normandy....so very early into the game before you recruit anyone)
He played it the next day, then once more that day. Apparently at night he tried booting it up a third time and it was a complete slideshow.
He could barely get past the menu to exit the game with the amount of chop. He could get into the game but it was absolutely unplayable.
All the other games he plays run completely fine still (Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead 2, etc). He hadn't changed any drivers or anything from the previous time he played. So he tries updating his video card drivers to see if it might fix the problem.
No luck.
He tries completely re-installing the game
No luck.
Why the hell did this happen? I'm at a complete loss. It went from excitement to "im too mad to waste anymore time on that piece of shit game, pretty f*cking shitty for Bioware I've lost a lot of respect for them."
So my plan totally backfires and I can't share a game I really liked with one of my best friends. He barely got to see any of it. Might have even uninstalled by now.
The big question:
Has this happened to anyone else? How did you fix it?
Posts
He did try that, but isn't it more peculiar it was running fine before?
He set everything to the lowest and it was still an absolute chop-fest.
Perhaps he should update his DX10 drivers? It could also be a memory problem. The problem is that there can be tens of thousands of problems, but without knowing his computer specs and stuff we're shooting in the dark.
He did update his drivers, he re-installed the game from scratch and he's running XP.
As for memory, he actually upgraded fairly recently and loads into games at around the same time as everyone else (Left 4 Dead 2 that is, only thing I have for comparison when it comes to us playing together and seeing him load)
Shooting in the dark is definitely how I've been seeing my approaches to this insane problem I'm desperate to fix for him. Gaming is important etcetera!
I guess it's why I asked my most trusted Gamer-Enclave. I hope at least one person has had this happen to them and can share a fix of sorts. I even got him to try windowed mode and no change.
Edit: Adus: In retrospect, if I had convinced him to try ME 1 first - this might have never happened. I told him beforehand that playing through ME 2 with a savegame from ME 1 is more enjoyable.
* Windows XP, Vista, or 7
Also, it installs the newest Direct X drivers etc when you install the game itself. As for a demanding engine....how demanding can the main menu be?
It's a 360 port, ergo, DX9.
EDIT: Was the problem just horrible lag? Any artifacts?
No artifacts, and to be clear hardware was the FIRST thing I had him check before ANYTHING else.
Checked his temperatures, clock speeds, temperatures while running the game. I asked him to try new audio drivers as a last ditch effort because I'm all out of ideas.

He got it working, re installed his ati overdrive control panel then the patch again. Computers just baffle us sometimes. But being stubborn has prevailed!
Thanks for everyone's help and patience.
I appreciated it more that way. "Oh sweet Wrex is the Chief now!"
When Mass Effect first came out, I was definitely busy with other games - so much so I didn't have it on my radar. So when ME2 came out I wikipedia'd everything I wanted to know about the first game. I know it completely defeats your point and seems - stupid right?
I still know the story and all the characters, I will most likely play through ME1 eventually but I heard the inventory system was clunky and it had flaws that would look well....bad in comparison to ME2 seeing as I played that one first :P
After beating ME2 I went to Masseffectsaves.com and grabbed a full Paragon female save that picked Anderson to lead the council, saved Liara etc etc (all the choices are listed before you download the save)
So I knew what I was getting into, I even enjoyed that playthrough so much I'm playing right now with a full Renegade ME1 save as Evil Abraham Lincoln.
Edit: For my own sake, this is the first time I've done something like this with a game series. I didn't buy HL Episode 2 before playing Blue Shift.
