Moto Droid Charging Issue

So I bought a Moto Droid a few months ago, and I've been immensely happy so far.

Except for one thing: the battery acts very weird sometimes.

The basic issue is that I charge it up, it has correct battery life, etc. but sometimes it gets into a "mood" where it runs itself down to ~5% battery life and then refuses to charge up past that. At this moment the phone has been plugged into a wall charger for nearly two days, and it still reads "charging 5%".

Now, 5% is pretty subjective. I've gotten this thing to work for hours at 5% battery life.

This issue isn't constant, and I have no idea what "triggers" it. I can plug it in sometimes and it will go right up to 100% no issues. Other times it gets stuck at 5% and won't move.

I want to take it to Verizon to get it checked out, but I want a decent idea of what may be causing the issue before I hand my lifeblood over to the techs. The simplest answer is that it may be a lemon, but I have doubts about that as I've trolled the internets for awhile now looking for even one other person having a similar issue without luck.

Specifically, I've started doing "tests" whenever possible to try to get this resolved. Whenever I'm not in my house it seems to charge "better". It was plugged in this morning at a friend's place for maybe an hour and it charged up to 20%, only to be lost again once I plugged it in back at my place. At least once charging off my computer has helped, though I'm unsure if there's any actual connection. My town uses socialized hydro for energy, if that's relevant.

I suppose my question is "what could be causing this?" I suspect that it may have something to do with the outlets and power at my house, as elsewhere it tends to charge fine. This is further strange by the fact that sometimes I have no issue at my house at all. I fear that it may just be out of my hands.

Any idea of what may be going on?

Sometimes the little counter that appears while the phone is plugged in doesn't update correctly. Stick with the battery indicator on the notification bar.

    No difference.

I've found that 5%, in this situation where it refuses to charge, is usually actually 5%.

    I have an Eris Droid.
The only issue I have with it is you can't really charge it via usb, it takes forever.

The charging issue sounds like a defect to me. If I were you I'd download an app called "Battery Widget" by mippin.com to get a better sense of how much charge it actually has.

Another note is if it's really charging there should be an amber light, when it is fully charged the light should turn green.

Let me know if this helps.

The USB charge "working" once was a shock, as it shouldn't.

It sounds like a defect until I start plugging it in elsewhere.

Could it be related to the current I have at my house?

The Droid droid just has a white charging light, no color involved.

Test the USB connections, too. I've had situations where I've thought my phone was charging overnight, yet it ran down during the day due to the cable not being properly inserted into the phone or wall adapter.

It's certainly not a "loose cable" issue. I'm pretty hardcore about my phone charging, these days.

I just plugged it into my computer to see if it's a power supply issue.

Ahh the eris has a colored light, I guess the Moto does not.

Worst comes to worst you can backup all your data and do a factory default wipe, and see if the problem continues.

Okay, the question I feel stupid for asking because I have no background in the science is: Is it possible that my house, at times, just doesn't receive the necessary power to charge my Droid?

Most signs point toward this, as the charging is almost never an issue elsewhere.

Either that or defect, which is equally as possible.

If you had an issue with the house, you would notice it with other appliances 1st. My vote is bad charger or a bad micro USB port on your phone

Consensus being that it's a defect?

It still doesn't explain why it charges fine everywhere but my house. Mystery, really.

Forgive me for being redundant but did you try removing the battery? I've noticed its a bit finnicky when charging, like it refuses to work right if a single connector is wrong.

Trying that now, and have tried that in the past.

That actually brings up another point: that if I turn the phone off and on it will display a higher charge (40-50%) and then lose charge gradually.

40% after taking the battery out and reseating it. We'll see if that works.

    Thanks.

EDIT: Went from 40% to 30% pretty quick.

do you have things like gps, blue tooth, wireless on,data syncing? those suck up the battery pretty quick, as in it can drain from full in a couple hours quick if all 4 are on, quicker if you had a ton of widgets running.

try a deep cycle recharge on it as well, drain it all the way until it turns off, than recharge it till your sure it's 100% (like overnight).

Deep cycle tends to work eventually, to my best knowledge (which is sketchy). At a certain point it always "works" again.

I've been running AppKiller pretty obsessively, so it isn't that.

running the power control widget? it's a super easy way to check status, and turn on/off of bluetooth, gps, wireless, syncing, and screen brightness. I know when I first got my droid I had them all on and wondered why my battery died so quick.

but your charge problems are odd, maybe try rebooting the phone? could just be a dud battery or phone I guess, see if the place you bought it from will do a quick battery exchange.
