Let's Play Part 22
First order of business, changing the lineup!
Things look a little empty in the Caravan, but that's temporary. Choose a relief.
Pika, why don't you keep Mordrak company. Oh... okay... Pikapuf returns to the Caravan. LewieP joins the battle party.
Got it! Thanks, fairy!
A secret path through the mountain? Creed isn't very trusting is he?
Oh hello, almost missed this little path here.
Secrets abound!
Brave Apples, of which there is one in the game I believe, automatically grant a levelup.
A hidden stash of mithril. And that's all for the cave. No battle, despite the TENSE MUSIC.
This is the territory of Mr. Creed. Go away!
(this glitch on this screen has always bugged me) Please let us pass! No! Leave now! This is bullshit! I came all this way to see him and I'm going to see him!
Way to invoke their wrath, Henroid. Don't worry I'm already trying to think of a way to turn around this awful first-impression.
This battle isn't particularly threatening. The big threats are the two skeletons.
Right away, Reynolds is a little screwed on the whole idea of moving.
The battle plan is to swing just a couple folks down south, and the rest come up north.
NOT PART OF THE BATTLE PLAN. Everyone rescue the healer! I have a name! I'm not just a piece of meat!
I don't think that worked out very well. Step aside junior, let me show you how it's done!
Oh, I guess you were actually trying. Both of you move aside!
You may be stronger, but you're still an ugly bird.
As usual, I get to claim the glory of the kill.
Decided to send JJ on up ahead to start tapping on one of the orcs.
As for the other...
I'm glad that still works.
I guess even the manliest of men can miss.
Her leveling progress is doing pretty well, if anyone noticed.
Hey, where the hell are you going Rent? Eh I'm gonna help out Scotts instead. Treason! Disobeying an order!
Time to prove my worth!
Well it's better than Pikapuf at least.
Bah, all my hard work for nothing!
You can't see it, but he spun around real fast and blew up when he died.
I really don't like these enemies.
Whistle while you work!
I really hope this trend doesn't continue.
You should really be more careful there Reynolds! I'm not a fighter by nature!
He can take a hit better than Pika at least.
Augh, this sucks.
WHY DAMN IT.
Hooray, I'm helping!
Aw heck, good effort Reynolds.
Harpy down south, and the Skeleton leader has his priest / madam posse nearby.
And that ends the voyage down south. Now to cross the desert to join the others!
(insert caption here)
This means war! Magical war! That sounded a little... uh... Fruity?
Enemies dodging attacks happens more often than I show by the way.
Score, free swag! As your leader I order you to hand it over when we're done here.
Gah you jerk, I just wanted to talk to Creed!
Oh boy.
Bonfire wins again.
Victory is ours!
Oddler, can you see? No, why? You're moving around as if you can see. Am I? Maybe my other senses have sharpened since I lost my sight. Maybe you're a liar liar pants on fire! Oh, I see. *tonk* Henroid, let's go see Mr. Creed!
+5 defense, it'll go a long way.
Healing Rain heals all your characters on the field. Worth holding on to for the end.
This places looks rather snazzy. Well he was like a general or something. I guess they have a good severence package or something. He's a devil, he can probably do whatever he wants.
Yes, sir.
Excuse me. Yeow! AAAH! Stop shouting! Y... yes? We've come to see Mr. Creed. My master? Do you have an appointment? A what?
*At this point, Pata turns around toward the hero and the hero just shakes his head.* No, not yet, but... I'm sorry, but he's busy now. Please come back later. We can't see Mr. Creed now. Way to give up immediately, Pata.
Henroid, Pata, let's force our way into the room! Oddler, you're getting bold. But, it is a good idea. Um, no it isn't? Hmmmph.... Well he does seem distracted... Let's go!
He teleported! You impolite kids! You can't go in! Mr. Creed is too busy! Go away! Henroid, on our left! That door might lead to Mr. Creed! Let's ditch this guy and go through that door. Henroid, let's do it! I don't want to fail now! Oddler is taking after me, awesome. Let's do it!
We'll see Mr. Creed later. Let's get out of here. Yeah, maybe later. ... GO!
What stupid kids! Whoever passes through this magic door becomes small. That is, anybody who's not protected by Mr. Creed.
Now, you're part of the collection!
Ow crap, that wasn't pleasant. What happened? A strange feeling swept over me when I entered that door. Then, it felt like... I was lifted upward! It's very difficult to explain what's happened to us.... What are you talking about?! There's only one way to explain it! Anyway, we're very small now. Small? How small? Let's see... now we're on a desk... and it's very large, like a village.
Goliath! Hey, what did you do to us? I told you not to go in there. You didn't listen to my warning. Hey, I tried to warn them! You guys look so cute! Ha, ha! Bye, little kiddies!
Off he goes... SON OF A BITCH it's always something! Henroid, cheer up! Let's look around this Desktop Kingdom. I agree! We can meet Mr. Creed later.
It's about this time in the game that I realized....
something was up with Oddler.
Can someone explain why it's a bad idea to promote your troops as soon as they've hit lvl 20?
It's not a bad idea at all, really. It's just powergaming to not promote until later. Your stats will be higher and it will be easier to level after promoting. The game gives experience based on your unpromoted level, and it also assumes that you promoted at level 20 (ie, level 1 promoted = level 21 unpromoted, level 10 promoted = level 30 unpromoted, etc).
Additionally, it can affect when spell casters learn spells. For example, Sollah will learn Heal 4 on level 40. So, if she makes it all the way up to level 38 and then is promoted, she will have to gain 19 more levels to get Heal 4, instead of just two.

If I promote at level 30 (which is the goal for most characters), their promoted level will read as 1. But they'll earn experience as if they were level 21. So at the point in the game I'm at right now (which is past the latest update mind you) I'm earning some ballin' experience (by the way, doing some leveling) which is carrying me into the high level 20's. While it'd fade away, if I promoted, the experience would be ripe again.
I played through the chess battle earlier tonight and it ended up going well. Here's a forecast on what the next updates will contain (no specifics):
next update is a town and the chess battle
after that, a little exploring and a battle to show off leveling efforts
after that, an update that's entirely story
after that, an update that's entirely story as well as PROMOTION TIME maybe
after that is town time and a battle
Yeah I'm roughly half-way through the game, I meant to note it in the update. I'll make a note of it next update so everyone catches that.
Adus learned Muddle 2 by the way. Still wondering if I should swap him over to a sorcerer instead.
Yes.
Even just from "interesting LP" perspective. He'll learn his spells a lot quicker than Taya, so you can show them off sooner, and there's no telling if she'll even be voted in. Also, that way you can take Tyrin when the choice comes up and show off the other spells, too (again, assuming he gets voted in).
Gah, status ailments, what the hell!? I thought horseshoes were supposed to be lucky!

Reynolds I'm doing some leveling right now and you've outpaced Rent. In fact, everyone is outpacing Rent as far as defense goes. While most everyone is taking 10 to 16 damage, Rent is still taking like 20-22 damage. And his higher HP doesn't really make up for it. And this isn't me raggin' on Rent the forumer, it's just the function of the character.
Meanwhile, EBM just knocked out a couple levels where he got +2 to all stats. That was weird.
I'm aiming for level 29 on this level run. I have an update that should be good to go tonight or tomorrow morning, but depending on a bunch of stuff the next might be delayed due to the leveling. Everyone costs along pretty well up 'til level 27, where kills are the exp gain and not the damage dealing.
Though, I'll let Adus know here and now that he was getting like 30 exp per casting of Blaze 3. Your exp luck stopped running dry!

So, fun bit of trivia I just found out. One of the Shining Force Gaidens for the Game Gear is set before Shining Force 2/During Shining Force 1. The initial mage that starts with the Force? Adus' own Sir Hawel.
MAJOR Shining Force 2 and Shining Force Gaiden 3 spoilers, like end game stuff so don't read this if you don't know what's gonna happen. :x
Also, Oddler/Odd Eye joins up for the last few battles.

uhh. that doesn't happen
Re: Chester. The starting knight always sucks. Not sure about SF 3 though, since so few people have played it.
No, in the Gaiden. Not this one. I only marked for SF2 spoilers because that's the LP we're in and I find it unlikely at best that anyone would seek out an obscure, Japanese-only Game Gear game to see it, so I didn't think spoilers would matter so much, there. I should edit that to make it more clear, though, sorry.
Re: SF3 starting knight. The bit of this one Let's Play I saw made him look pretty beastly. SF3 is a bit of a special case, though, as it has weapon levels and (really powerful) special attacks that can trigger based on weapon levels. So, since you have him the longest, his weapon levels are likely to be higher than the other knights and since the Lance techniques do both massive damage and a couple can hit multiple times, he'll clear out pretty much anything in one or two hits.
Can't wait for promoting time, that was always hard to hold off on, especially since the majority of characters end up looking way cooler. Though I did manage a run in the game where I held off promoting everyone you could until level 40, yeah thats including Kiwi heh. I must have had a lot of time on my hands as a kid.

Damn son.
I got almost everyone, except LewieP (27), to level 28. Getting to 29 is gonna take longer than I care to stretch for, since the only enemies that give decent experience aren't plentiful on the map and only kick out like 14 exp on death. Between 12 people, fuck that.
Also, Sollah is coming up to a place where she can compete with attack damage. Starting work on the next update right now, it'll be up in a couple hours.

Let's Play Part 23
What does that mean? What do you mean no concept of time? We never get old. We never die. What is the meaning of life? Sounds like a pretty sweet deal! Being a ex greater devil's plaything.
Does not compute; he's a greater DEVIL. Ex. His magic saved us a long time ago during a natural disaster. Devils cannot use their magic to affect human lives. Supposedly, it's one of their rules. I'm not inclined to believe them.
I don't fancy falling a long ways anyway.
What disaster is this, exactly? Maybe we can find out in another Shining Force™ game! BROUGHT TO YOU BY SEGA. I was looking for the legendary sword. I hate it here! Legendary sword, eh? Sounds right up my alley.
Well we were supposed to talk to Creed about some things and we entered this door... Ah, a mistake. I see. I suggest you see King Ponpei. He's a good man. Oh, thank you!
... this better not be what I think it is. Hey boss! MORDRAK, what the fuck is everyone doing here?! Well, everyone got worried and we came inside to see where you were. There goes our rescue plan.
It will be good training for you.
Narrative note: NO, IT ISN'T.
So, you were not able to see Creed? I know that tone, that's the "I know a way you can" tone. Tell us! Somewhere in Floor World, there's a tunnel that leads to Creed. Excellent! If you'll just let the guard show us the way down, we'll be on our way! OK, I'll let you go if you win a game against my army. You may go to the chessboard now. These feats of strength aren't really my thing. How many times have we been helped without having to prove ourselves? I've lost count.
You don't look so strong to me.
You're a piece of plastic. Or... ivory? Yikes!
Or if you're anything like my knights, be captured or poisoned. Hey, I wasn't captured! Just, uh, not watching where I stepped! ... okay you've got me on the poison thing.
No I think Sollah has already instructed me, thanks.
But there's three of you. It's one of those kinds of relationships. What? What do yo- oooooohhhhh.
If it is King Ponpei's wish, we will accept your challenge!
Well, um, what're the rules and- Now, start the battle! Do your best!
The famed chess battle. The game wasn't cruel enough to enforce chess-style movement, nor are the enemies programmed to. That'd be cool though. Instead, the enemies are designed to be tough all around. They also charge you once you pass a certain point on the board.
... How the hell are we suppose to assault a line like that? Hey, you're the hero, you come up with something.
... We're screwed. Inch up space by space, I guess. Look out!
What the...
Wait a minute. In chess you only have to beat the king. Well why the heck did he just run up and clobber me?! Because he's stupid. Everyone attack!
Well, not before the King's posse gets their turn in. Sheesh.
It's just a few scrapes guys, you can manage!
They haven't broken their ranks. What is going on here?
Wow, this guy is durable.
I didn't think one of the queens would come down. They all seemed content standing still.
Not even Raijin's fists of fury can put a decent dent in this guy.
What, why aren't you healing? We've got this in the bag, we just need to finish the king and we win!
Noooooooooooooooooooo Oh. Well yeah maybe I could've healed Rent.
Check...
... mate!
I won't lie you guys - there's a lot of satisfaction in that battle going down as quickly as it did despite all the hype about how hard it is. Take that, readers!
With it you can leave Desktop Kingdom safely. Good luck!
Cool, they're like little parachutes! Let's get out of here already.

Lots and lots of Mythril. Let's Play Part 24
TOTALLY JAILED AT THE TIME OF POSTING THIS: TO READ, QUOTE IT AND PREVIEW IT
Aw man, I wanted to hang on to those for when we get big again. What exactly did Pata need that for anyway? I can't fly is all... Well I wouldn't have minded having my own. You okay Oddler? I'm fine. Why didn't you hold onto me as we jumped? Could've been like an action movie. Because you're gross and mean. Well that solves that, then. Hey, what's going on over there?
It's too heavy. I can't lift it. I give up!
That's a nice looking ring. I'll have to remember it's here.
A hole in the wall leads to Creed, but don't use it! Remind me what's so wrong with this tunnel again? We came down here to escape, but devils live in the tunnel.... You guys look capable. Why didn't you just fight your way through? They're too ferocious! I'm gonna stay in Floor World. Suit yourself. Me and my crew are gonna roll up in there and bust some heads if need be.
Oh a little door built into the bookshelf! That's so cute!
This is pretty cool, I've gotta admit. Matchbox beds! There you are! Oh, you guys made it. Grand. Hope you're ready for a fight 'cause we're rolling out into one.
Khavall is a brave leader. We trust him! Brave enough to fear the devils in the crack in the wall.
Oh God, I'm gonna throw up. Is this the smell of the devils that they were talking about?
What huge rats! Technically they're normal rats. Well, minus the talking. Welcome! It's dinner time!
This is one of those stages that is good for leveling in. It's also a good place to find out how much of a beating you're in for, for the remainder of the game. TIME OUT. Huh What the heck do you mean time out? This isn't freeze tag!
Choose a relief.
What? I thought that was a joke! Oh, it is, don't worry. You're just the butt of it. Rent returns to the Caravan. Pikapuf joins the battle party. Hooray!
Okay time in!
Sollah is close to that oh-so-important mark of level 40. She has like 50 attack, better than my ranged fighters.
Well, at least I'm doing better at this than Rent. No pain, no gain! But Rent was always in pain.
I think that's suppose to be water down there. Maybe I'm just hoping.
Those Bubbling Oozes can silence on hit every now and then.
I'm helping! Good job there Pika! ... you don't really mean that. I just want Rent to be shamed.
Lot of business as usual going on.
I love the 16-bit era.*
*This may or may not reflect Reynolds' actual opinion.
Yeah you better cower in fear!
Tally ho! That's not quite English enough for me. Say something else next time.
The initial mobs cleared, now to press forward and be hit from two corners by two groups.
See? (well, that second one blinked)
I really could go for a promotion right about now. I'm one of the slowest to act on the team now!
Ugh, it's like being sneezed on but with larger wads of spit and mucus.
Badman gets these a lot, with his over 40 agility.
fffffffff
She's already about to tip into level 34.
Invisible Pony is the best Pony. Are you saying I'm ugly?
Of course not!
Scotts has a ton of defense and it has me second-guessing promoting him to a Baron instead of Gladiator, 'cause the latter will get much more defense but Barons get better movement.
Time to launch our attack against the talking rat.
This was a critical hit. Don't worry. He's still completely fucked.
Christ, no matter how hard we hit 'em he's still standing!
Willard can move twice in a turn like all bosses.
I didn't cast it, but I just wanted to show off how Slow goes from requiring being next to an enemy to not being next to them and also cover a huge freaking area. It lowers agility and defense by like 40%.
Wait, what's this?
Pikapuf has earned his wings! Yay! Does this mean I can stick around? Not by a long shot! Where's Rent? He's got to hear about this.
I didn't know rats were intelligent enough to have thrones. Well they are devil rats.
Let's loot the place! Everybody double-up and carry a coin out!
Okay let's keep a low profile out here, we don't need that Goliath jerk catching us... This room is way bigger than Floor World, stick close to the wall.

Sollah is close to that oh-so-important mark of level 40. She has like 50 attack, better than my ranged fighters.

Badman gets these a lot, with his over 40 agility.
She's already about to tip into level 34.
Invisible Pony is the best Pony.

Time to launch our attack against the talking rat.
This was a critical hit. Don't worry. He's still completely fucked.
Willard can move twice in a turn like all bosses.
I didn't cast it, but I just wanted to show off how Slow goes from requiring being next to an enemy to not being next to them and also cover a huge freaking area. It lowers agility and defense by like 40%.
Wait, what's this?
