Video Card Upgrade Question

PostPost Registered User regular

Hi Guys,

I have a NVidia 6600GT PCI Express 128 mb video card

This card is on sale near me for 30 dollars canadian.

BFG GeForce GT 210 589MHZ 512MB 1GHZ DDR2 PCI-E HDMI DVI-I VGA Video Card

Will this be a large upgrade? I have a 400 w power supply will this be enough to use it? Will I have the proper connectors?

I have never installed a video card before is it pretty straight forward?

I basically just want to know how big of an upgrade it is. Will this card be able to run SC 2 at 1920x1080 at like low or medium settings?

You will be replacing an old, outdated video card with another old, outdated video card. I'm not sure exactly what would be the point.....

The "upgrade" is probably not going to be visible by any means. If budget is really your first concern, why not go for a good old 4670 ? (listed at $69.9 USD on amazon right now)

As for the installation , it is extremly simple. Be sure to power off everything, unscrew old card, put new one in the exact same slot, boot.

Lastly, a 400W PSU will be enough, but is that a no-name supply unit, or is it a specific brand? No-names are notoriously hard to gauge, so ymmv.

Realize that the listed wattage on a PSU is almost completely irrelevant to what kind of card it can handle; you are really concerned with the voltage of the PSU's rails.

Although that particular card apparently only lists a 300w PSU requirement, so it's hard to imagine a 400w that wouldn't be able to handle it.

All good advice here. The Radeon 4670 is an excellent card for the price that should have no problem on that PSU.

Some video cards do require a power connector, but I don't think I would attempt to use any such card with your current power supply.

And if the rest of his system is old and outdated is there a point to putting money into a higher end video card? Without knowing the system specs it is difficult to make a good recommendation.

So the 4670 doesnt actually require any power connectors other then plugging in to the video card slot?
