A tasty can of worms: PS3 vs Xbox
Posts
If you have a decent computer setup get a PS3. If not go for the exclusives that sound more intresting.
If you have an interest in blu-ray films, I'd say go with the PS3. If you have a good gaming computer, there's a chance you won't need either, potentially. If you really enjoy online multiplayer, go with the Xbox 360. But your probably best off looking at individual exclusives.
I do become inconsolable when no one mentions EDF2017 as one of the best reasons to own a 360 though.
But really, it comes down to which one has the games you want on it.
It isn't.
Provided, that is, you have access to a PAL PS2 and therefore GDF.
I bought it, and it is not nearly as fun as I expected.
Demos have always been sufficient enough to persuade me or dissuade me from unsure prospects

At least they're there.
Some games don't represent well in demo form, some do. It's hit & miss, but like I said, at least the option's there.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
All XBLA games are required to have a demo version per Microsoft's standards.
The PS3 does this awkward thing where your PSN account and local user account are not the same thing. I'm sure this one's a little subjective, but I really feel the 360's method is superior.
Why the hell am I not allowed to plug a hard drive into another PS3 without it being erased?
Wait, you mean you won't run in a low power state if an uncharged control is plugged in when I shut you off? Sure it saves some power, but what about when I come back only to find my controller is dead?
Various places in the XMB have an inconsistent means of navigation. Some places allow for let/right to go in and out of submenus while other places don't.
More on the XMB, why can I not exit the overlay through any means other than the PS button? O brings me back from every other place in the overlay.
Why is your auto trophy sync stupid?
The PS keyboard input is not updated with the firmware in older games (Though, admittedly, this is a really minor issue even for this list as future games won't have this problem. But either way, the phone style keyboard was an idiotic idea)
You can't read AAC tags properly?
Why does your Playstation 1 software emulator suck? (Sure, the 360's OXbox emulation isn't perfect either, but seriously Sony, there are a billion open source projects with significantly superior emulation capabilities than you have. The same can't be said for the OXbox)
And finally, FUCKING SONY, WHY IS YOUR SYSTEM CURVED, I CAN'T PUT ANYTHING ON TOP OF IT THAT WAY!
These are all just minor annoyances and don't completely impede the PS3's ability to do what it's supposed to do, but they get really annoying when there isn't any reason for them to be that way. I'm sure someone could come up with a similar list for the 360 (and please do, I'd like to see it), but some of these things are just really basic.
And on a vaguely related in a not quite related way, I really want to see Microsoft add emulation for Playstation 1 games to the Xbox. Microsoft acquired a company that once upon a time sold a commercial emulation for the PS1, so they likely have someone there with enough knowledge to do this (well, they probably would anyway), and assuming they write their own PS1 BIOS, they're not infringing on anyone's copyright by doing so. Though this would likely open an even larger can of worms than this topic did.
I've not encountered any issues yet with things stacked on my 360. And even like it is, it still has more room around it than your average media center would give it.
Circle to exit the XMB would be monumentally stupid and such a pain in the ass
If I'm deep in the menus, I hit Circle a few times to get out to the main XMB menu
If I kept accidentally hitting it and exiting to the game...that would be retarded
Just no
That said, PS3. It's a really nice system overall, but it's got The Last Guardian coming. The 360 has Alan Wake and Fez on the way, and while Fez may be worth buying a 360 for, it's likely to hit the PC, or possibly the PS3 after some time has passed. Alan Wake might not really live up to what we're expecting from it.
Plus, Demon's Souls. That shit is red hot.
Maybe if they release some fucking info on it or a tentative release season or something
I would pay money to see another trailer for that game if it featured a new song from their soundtrack.
- I have to manually install shit that is downloaded
- Can't change most options while in game, like auto controller shut off
The minor things that annoy me about the xbox
- So many fucking ads. And I hate the cutsey avatars. (forced to create and use it)
- Can't load mp3s on to the machine. Have to stream off of PC or rip from CD... what the fuck?
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I got a 360 first then I got a PS3, and honestly I prefer the PS3.
There are a few things that annoy me with both consoles.
360:
* Pay to play online? Fuck that.
* MS screw you over for any accessory royally, want a new hard drive? That'll be triple how much a hard drive costs!
* Fear of RROD, seriously.. this is a constant in the back of my mind, when will it RROD on me?
* This is a personal one, a couple of months back I bought the official MS brand rechargeable joypad battery pack.. it lasted a month and no longer holds a charge. So now i'm back to buying AA batteries.
* Shitty d-pad
* Sometimes menus become like a fucking maze trying to find stuff, endless subcategories.
PS3:
* Minor annoyance, you can't remove the battery without a lot of hassle. So if its charge has run out its time to hook it up back up to the PS3 via a usb cable, I wish you could just have a spare battery pack instead and quickly switch. I'll grant this is a really stupid minor annoyance. (also, as mentioned the usb cable is fucking short so I got a usb extension cable)
* PSN store (at least for the UK) really need to pull their fucking finger out and have a demo section, rather than having to trawl through all the games or the categories.. one nice big "DEMO" section would be nice.
I wish I could remember more for the PS3 right now, I guess... oh, GTA 4 is blurry and it annoys the shit out of me when I play it. As in it's upscaling from 640p and everything has a slight blur to it that annoys the ever living shit out of me whenever I play it.

I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.
This is something that annoyed me. I made the apparently unreasonable assumption that since the PS3 retained the PS2's bizarre "standby power" mode, with the red light, it could do something useful in that mode, like charge a controller.
But no, you have to actually turn it on and leave it on. Which strikes me as a little wasteful. Same goes for leaving my TV on just to charge a PS3 controller.
Why does that mode still exist? To emphasize some similarity with the PS2, I guess? Is there seriously a reason not to just flip the switch on the back if I want to shut off the PS3? A very minor, minor peeve--it really shouldn't effect the decision to get one or another, but it's something that bothers me.
I don't think I'd be quite willing to stack anything on my Xbox 360, with the exception of my Dreamcast, since it's such a small unit. So I don't really mind that the PS3 has a curved top. I mean, I guess if I had to judge it aesthetically, it looks kind of...well, unusual, but that has no real bearing on the gaming experience. Something a bit more relevant--it might just be my imagination, but I could swear that PS3 loading times seem among the longest, overall, for this generation. I don't know if this has to do with the nature of blu-ray as a storage, or some sort of twisted irony in light of frequently mandatory installations, but it's odd.
But uh
It doesn't actually hurt anything either, so yeah
You wanna know my big pet peeve with the PS3?
It's the fucking Blu-ray remote. It is so well-designed as a remote...until you realize that any button accidentally pressed, not just a power button on it, will turn on your PS3 from standby mode. That gets to be a pain in the ass. I typically watch a DVD while I'm in bed at night, and then turn off the PS3 and TV. Sometimes the cat will come in the room and hit the PS3 remote. Sometimes I'll get up to take a piss and accidentally hit one of the buttons in the middle of the night. Maybe I just dropped it at the side of my bed the wrong way right after I turned it off.
At the very least, if it has to have this "feature", it should include a button to turn off the PS3 with one power button press on the remote. Nope.
It has gotten to the point that if the PS3 accidentally gets turned on and the TV is not on, I know to hold the PS button for a minute, hit Enter, hit left arrow and hit Enter again to turn it off.
I shouldn't have to memorize commands on my remote.
Which sucks, because its the same thing for blu-ray films. I mean, I can get around watching files streamed from my PC by sending them to my Xbox 360 (which has a slightly less irritating UI, and more importantly, came with a free remote control), but I'm stuck for blu-ray.
I was thinking of buying a remote control purely for blu-ray, since I already own 5 BR films (versus 2 PS3 games), but then I just spent $70 on all the cables I need to connect my PC to my HDTV in the other room, from Monoprice. I guess I'll just have to keep fumbling with the Dualshock 3.
Seriously, I'm sure there are people who like the video UI for the PS3, but I really, really dislike it.
I'm not going to repeat the pros and cons of each, as that's been done enough, but I will just say I don't think I'd be able to give up either system. I love my Playstation 3 for Blu-rays and exclusives and I love my Xbox 360 for the better/large multiplayer.
I really like the PS3 video UI btw, especially that square thumbnail function, sadly it doesn't work for blu-rays and DVDs, so meh.
Yeah, I left it for like a week or two whilst I played a couple of new games on my PS3. Came back to it and bam, totally dead battery.
I think the insulting thing is I've done that to the PS3 plenty of times and the battery on that is just fine. If Sony can do it why can't MS?
Quite often i'll switch between not playing the other console for a couple of weeks or longer whilst I play out a game on the other (or the pc), for example.. when Mass Effect 2 came out on the 360 I played that non-stop for a decent while, when I bought FF13 and Uncharted 2 i've been playing them for the last couple of weeks.

I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.
Granted, I refused to use it (because it felt like a cheap piece of crap with no rumble), but it's still....$40US?
Right, I knew I was forgetting one.
You can buy them in increments of 400 on the Zune Marketplace, but I'll agree, it's stupid. They really should just drop points entirely.
If we're bringing up pet peeves, this is my worst with the 360. The point system is fucking stupid.
My biggest pet peeve with the PS3 is how short the charge cord it comes with is.
Especially when the battery starts running low in the middle of a game. Boo.
But really, that's a minor annoyance. I'm more annoyed at how slow everything about the system's internet access is. Downloading a system update, demo, or just about anything else? Better set aside at least an hour. Particularly for system updates, that's ridiculous, especially for minor changes. And especially when compared to major updates for the 360 (like the NXE) taking only a few moments to download and install.
Edit: Wow... I suppose that's kind of a minor annoyance too. :P

I had two sixaxis controllers, both bought pre-Dual Shock 3. They would periodically stop working for five seconds or so, like the signal dropped or something. Very weird, and annoying, especially when I would play SF 4 online.
With the 360, I had one of those official rechargeable battery packs. After six months or so, they would only recharge if I kept plugging and unplugging the charge cable over and over again. Sometimes it would take two or three tries, sometimes it would take two or three days.
My HDD also crashed on my 360. The console was still under warranty so they replaced it, but I lost all of my save data including my first Mass Effect clear. I had it for a little more than two years and it never got the RROD, and I recently sold it to a friend of mine and it's still going strong, but those other hardware issues were annoying.
I thought PSN downloads were pretty fast.
Then again 1 gb in 40 mins is fast to me.
Interestingly enough, the 360 sits perfectly on top of the oXbox. The curved top on the original actually fits perfectly with the concave bottom of the 360.
True enough. If you can afford them, there are enough exclusives on each system to justify a purchase of both. I bought a 360 shortly after launch, and my wife was kind enough to get me a PS3 for my birthday a few years ago, so if there's a game I want, I don't have to sit and stew about it being on a system I don't own.
My connection is typically around 15Mb/s, so when the connection is actually online, we're downloading pretty fast. Seeing a file that is 1GB take an hour or more to download is crazy.
And langfor6, yea, I don't use the play and charge either. I used to, but one of them got so hot it burned my finger (blister and all). Alkalines and wired controllers only now...

except the PS2 was shitty when it came to shelf life...
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
