My original ps2 phat is still running strong, then again I also had a xbox and gamecube (and PC) as well so I spread out the game time. So that is another reason to get both, extend the life of your systems.
My original PS2 phat is still running too, and though I had a Gamecube I barely used it. Actually, my original PS1 still works, too.
lucky! i went through two fat ones and never upgraded to a slim. the damn blue discs never loaded...
You're not alone. Three PS2s in 4 years (and these weren't even early PS2s...the earliest one was from 2004).
I think those repeated failures kept me from buying a Slim. Kind of a stigma attached to it (and those were my first years in college, so I was short on cash anyway).
My three units died for different reasons. One suffered a catastrophic failure (components on the mother board burned out, presumably from fan failure). Another have a disk-read error (those were so common, apparently, there was a class-action lawsuit against Sony for it) that I couldn't fix on my own. 'Nother just refused to turn on after a while.
On ps3 you plummet your money down on blind buys, because most of dlc games don't have demos.
That is a big minus on ps3.
360 XBLA title demos are generally very very short and not representative of the game at all. Not sure I would count that as a huge plus for the 360.
They're long enough so I can eliminate most of the games I won't like. I feel Hands-on is better way to judge things than watching videos or reading reviews.
Also the whole internet shop feels better organized in 360 than in PS3.
I tried to look ps3 demos and best I could do was search with demo keyword, which gave me psp exclusive demos as well, which aren't useful for me.
Only thing I've dared to buy from PS3-online was stardust HD, and that's because I liked the originals on amiga and it got downloadable demo.
The pay system was nicer on ps3. Prices in actual euros and I could pay exact amount and not have change hanging around the account.
The PSN store has changed quite a bit, so it's obviously been a while since you've been in there jammu. There are quite a few demos for both PS3 and PSP (though not for every title) and they're much easier to access now (they have their own button and are subdivided by system).
Not saying one is better than the other, but your assessment of the PSN is out of date and rather irrelevant now.
I like the XBLM a bit better than PSN still (mostly because of Microsoft's "every arcade game must have a demo" policy), but really both are fine systems now.
Community games has given XBLM a clear, overwhelming advantage in the sheer amount of content available, but finding the gems in there can be a challenge that I don't think many are keen to undertake. They've also done a fantastic job courting awesome XBLA exclusives. On the other hand, the PSN has a lot of great exclusives and PS1 classics make for a hearty dose of nostalgia that the XBLM can't match up to.
Both systems are starting to figure out that sales are awesome, but I doubt either will ever get as great about it as PC digital distribution platforms are. As of recent, the US PSN's updates have also been incredibly depressing (very little new, worthwhile content), but hopefully it's just a seasonal lull...

Actually I got my ps3, when Heavy rain came out, so It is pretty recent.
Ps3 and psp are divided to their own categories, but they have trailers/demos/themes/add-ons mixed together as far as I can see.
On 360 you got view all trailers, view all demos, view all live arcade games, etc + view latest demos, view latest trailers, etc. Much easier to find what you want (demos/add-ons) and ignore crap (pictures/themes)
I'd love to be proven wrong about ps3 shop, as it would mean I'd find those demos more easily.
Just navigate to the game you're interested in and you'll find out if it has a demo or not. The US PSN store also has a separate category for demos, the PAL PSN store does not. I've always found navigating the PSN store a whole lot easier than the XBLA store.
They're long enough so I can eliminate most of the games I won't like. I feel Hands-on is better way to judge things than watching videos or reading reviews.
Lots of people probably won't be able to form an opinion on such short demos though, so I wouldn't consider it a huge plus.
Community games has given XBLM a clear, overwhelming advantage in the sheer amount of content available
Provided you live in a region where you can access them.
Eh, I can't use XBLA demos to figure out if I want a game or not, they offer a way too small sample of the game, if the demos are so short they're unusable to me then I don't think it's nit-picking to point that out.
If he buys a 360 based on everything having demos, and going from PC-length demos, he's probably in for a huge disappointment.

We'll get both of them eventually. Hopefully during this year.
My Live arcade purchases: 24 good games and 4 duds.
All the duds were bought without testing trial, because they were classics I liked when I was kid. (street fighter 2, Sensible world of soccer, gauntlet, speedball 2).
I've learned my lessons. No more live arcade games without testing.

PS3 Wireless is incompatible with a selection of Netgear Wireless routers.
This is a pain.
On the other hand in the PS3's favour is it that is is much more friendly as a media player. It's UPnP media server support is way better than the 360s (which is really only an issue if you're using Linux or a Mac), it's much more friendly for playing whatever content that you throw at it - the 360 requires an optional media update which can be a pain if you've had to switch consoles or something and haven't been able to run the license swapper. The media interface is generally better for the PS3 as well. Its scenic searching is great.
I much prefer Live Arcade and the Achievement system over trophies. Likewise gamercards are much nicer than PSN Profiles, and Live is much nicer than the PSN in general.
Personally, I think achievements make the 360 much nicer as a gaming platform. I use my PS3 all the time, but it's probably been well over a year since I played a game on it, whereas I game on my 360 all the time.
Just wanted to add that a full recharge for a Dullshock 3 takes about 30 minutes; and that charge lasts me about 10 hours of gameplay. I actually prefer charging once in a blue moon to having to buy batteries and throw them out... just my two cents.
also, for any movie lover, I gotta cast my vote for PS3. Just bought the slim 4-5 months ago, and the difference in noise level is huge. The PS3 is almost silent, the 360 sounds like an F-18 taking off, the noise has actually become a big deal for me when I want to watch suspense/horror movies.
360's trophy/achievement system is much better than PS3's imo.
I'm sure that the PSN's online features will begin to more closely mirror XBOX Live, but only when the community begins to demand it more. That day will be a good day.
On the note of the Slim vs Phat - as a Phat owner I'd suggest just going for the Slim and picking up a cheapo PS2 to run your PS2 games, should you have any you wish to play.
I was having a lot of problems with my Phat suffering multiple YLODs. Preparing for the worst, I went out and secured an old PS2 so I would have a means to play my old games when the Phat inevitably died on me again and I would replace it with a Slim. Now the thing seems determined to live and taunt me by running like a champ while the PS2 collects dust.
This is especially evident when playing God of War 3, which many people have complained that their boxes would begin to roar like a jet engine during play. Mine remained silent during the whole ordeal.

I have very little doubt that the batteries inside the DS3 vary widely performance wise because, well, they're batteries. It would be hard for them not to. Mine might last 10 hours, if I'm lucky, but I know for a fact it takes more than an hour to charge (more like 2 or 3, realistically speaking).
My old-model PS3 is definitely more quiet than my Xbox 360, but one thing that bothers me is that it also gets really really hot. The hot air blowing is enough to warm the wooden furniture around it, to the point where it is unpleasant to the touch (though not scalding or anything). By contrast, my Xbox 360 stays far more within the area of "reasonable" temperatures for, well, video game consoles.
This is something I've been wondering about for more than a year now. Are all PS3s that freakishly hot? Is it just mien? Should I be worried?
Don't really care about trophies/achievements. I honestly have no idea how the ones on the PS3 work, a year later. Though I am much more impressed by the Xbox 360's integration between games and the UI itself (feels much more efficient to buy DLC for specific games, quicker to access additional information, etc.).

Our PS2 phat is running fine, but it's one of the PX models... they were rock solid. Any PT lower than PT6, not so much...
Also, the Gamecube had some pretty rampant power issues. Not nearly as bad as the DRE, but the Gamecube was more prone than any other system I've seen to dirty power problems (surges, etc).
I do miss systems that were rock solid, but such is the price of progress I suppose. There is no doubt that quality control has gotten worse, but systems now also have far more moving parts than they used to. The more shit that moves, the easier it is to break.

Noise level should vary a lot between console revisions, so there probably are quiet 360s out there and quite noisy PS3s. I usually choose gaming on my more silent PS3 over slightly more AA and resolution in the 360 versions of games. For movies I just use a standalone blu-ray player which is more silent than either.
Edit: PS3s are generally more quiet though, but just saying you can have bad luck if you buy based on that.
Count the number of games you want for the 360. Now count the number of games you want for the PS3. Whichever one wins, is the one you should get. Just keep in mind, I went through 10 Xbox 360 consoles before I switched over to the PS3, and haven't regretted it since.

That's really strange; I'm positive it doesn't take more than an hour to charge my controller, just did it last week. During 2 half-hour tv shows it had fully charged, I assumed it had been done before the full hour was up. I usually don't run it down to totally empty, though.. once the red lights on the DS3 start flashing I just plug it in at the next chance I get.
Also, on the heat issue... mine gets pretty hot if I am using it for long sessions; never anything as hot as you described though. I keep mine in a TV stand but pretty well ventilated, and its also a Slim (since you have a Phat that could be totally different).
edit: also just remembered I got this controller for X-mas, so it is pretty new. I don't think Sony is rolling out different types of DS3's, though.
I wonder, does the topic creator actually want to decide between the two, or is this an elaborate way to start a flame war?
Well, the thread began with the only post they have ever made here and the OP has not contributed further thus far, despite several requests for clarification on a number of points...

Definitely true. My Slim's fans are definitely quieter than my 360. But my 360 is definitely quieter than my brothers Phat. Seriously, I was standing twice the distance from his PS3 as I usually am from my 360, and it was louder than my 360.
As a recent PS3 adopter, I can't believe it took me so long to pick one up. Awesome hardware, much better benefits than the 360 IMHO, and great exclusives.

I don't think 360s are designed to be stacked on top or below other components either, so it's risky in regard to overheating... I would like it if consoles were designed for that too, but I don't think it's recommendable for either console.
I've not encountered any issues yet with things stacked on my 360.
It's almost like the 360 was designed to sit on top of my OBox comfortably. Didn't have a problem the few years I did that.
I am officially an idiot for never thinking of this. It solves the cord dragging across the living room issue because the lappy lives right next to the chair I spent most of my time in. Thank you.
It hasn't been mentioned (I don't think), but 360 uses the god awful MSfun bucks system. PSN uses whatever currency you use. Another thing to consider if you decide to go online for DLC.

Thanks for choosing your side of things, however perhaps some elaboration would help the original poster choose, other than 'hay i like the ps3 k bai'
I really, really like that the PSN just charges my credit card the actual cost of things I buy, when I buy them.
I agree. Being forced to purchase points in a set number, which you may or may not use can often be wasteful because in some instances you end up with a leftover portion that is too small to buy anything you want. The ability to just pay what you need to is a great money-saver for the consumer.

-Better hardware (I'm on my third 360 and warranty is no longer covered). The slim system is also quiet, I accidentally leave it on all the time.
-built-in wi-fi, no need to buy the ridiculous MS network adapter or a clunky third party one. Also has a web browser.
-Controllers have built in chargers, no need to buy the expensive charge packs or AA batteries
-Free Netflix play (you obviously need an account, but you don't need to pay for Gold service). Same thing goes for games, of course.
-Better online store (no points to speak of, just $ value)
I love my 360, but I have been using it less. It's a great system, especially for someone like me who does not have a good gaming computer. Many of the best Xbox games are available on PC.
I really, really like that the PSN just charges my credit card the actual cost of things I buy, when I buy them.

This is probably entirely just my own paranoia, but I am actually quite happy that I no longer have to give either Microsoft or Sony my credit card number (at least as far as their consoles are concerned). I buy time cards for the Xbox 360 (particularly when they're on sale), and I buy purchase cards for stuff off PSN.
I've owned a 360 since the day it came out... or at least the month it came out. In February (this February) I picked up the PS3.
Personally... I think PS3 blows the 360 outta the f*in water. Why? It's all about the exclusives baby! PS3 has the AMAZING Uncharted 2, Little big planet, Metal Gear, and Demon Souls. PS3 has the really really good God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Fat Princess, and others varying on taste. The blue-ray player tips it over the edge.
Plus Playstation Home is a blast. Any female avatar is instantly ganked by about 20 dudes. Where ever you go you see bunches of dudes with a girl in the center. AND THE DRAMA! It's so fun to watch! It's like a social experiment gone wrong.
I think I'm pretty damn biased though for two reasons
1. PS3 is a new toy!
2. I have a really really good computer. Since the vast majority of 360 games are also on the PC my 360 is somewhat useless.

Again, just me.
