On the matter of the PS3...has anyone else with a 80 GB PS3 (software BC) noticed that their wireless device is really, well, weak? It might just be my crappy internet connection through, but running tests, I've found that the PS3 has to be a lot closer to my wireless router than other devices to function properly. I've tried moving it to the top of my furniture, making a crude antenna for my router, the usual fixes, but the only method is to close the distance.
I end up relying on the 50 ft ethernet cable I have hanging around for just this case.
I ended up wiring mine just because I play fighting games online mostly where every little bit counts. When it was wired everything but fighting games worked fine.
I pretty much have to do that for, well, everything. Granted, the one game I play online regularly is very, very fast paced, so it's not too surprising. But even for watching anything that isn't lower-end youtube quality through PS3 Media Server pretty much requires you be wired up unless you don't mind waiting for three minutes at 5 to 6 minute intervals in the middle of the video.
Thankfully, when my HDMI to DVI cables come in, I can stop streaming video to my consoles period.
Again I bring this up as a serious negative on PS3. I forgot to change my router settings on my PS3 so its not been connected for like a week. I do it last night before playing Darksiders to check my messages and ...yeah...that took like 30 minutes again. Fucking sick of that.
Side note, how is PS Home? When I got my PS3, it basically sucked loud and clear, even if you liked stuff like Second Life. I imagine they've had a lot of time to add stuff, functions, etc. Is it worth checking out?
Home is weird. There is definately some sort of community of sorts, which I am completely not a part of nor interested in the least of. Some of the minigames are kind of interesting. And hell, its free and you don't have to ever venture there so *shrug*

Home should not ever be considering an argument to owning a PS3 in the PS3 vs 360 debate. In fact, if you were forced to use Home even once, it'd become an argument towards owning a 360. It's that bad. It's a bland, lifeless wasteland of boring avatars that just sucks up your monthly bandwidth by loading assets over and over without providing anything fun or even remotely interesting to look at or interact with, since the 2 or 3 virtual arcades, pool tables and bowling alleys are all taken up already.
But hey, you can buy a little end table, or a hat. With real money.
I had completely forgotten Home exists, I had successfully blocked out that memory. Thanks a lot for reminding me.
Jerks.
It's part of the PS3 experience. If I have to be subjected to watching the ball drop in the sad excuse Home has for "New Years Eve", so should you.
Sadist.
I still don't see why they didn't use Sackboys for the Home avatars and allow you to use all your LBP costume pieces. It would still be a waste of time but at least it would have been cute instead of disturbing.

Its talk like this that makes me laugh at all of the Home DLC they offer up as 'bonuses', as anyone cares if I have an Ezio/Altair suit, or a Big Daddy special outfit. Maybe 5 people would see it, and it sure as hell isn't anyone I know.
And for all of the people who diss Avatars on 360, no one throws Home up in your face. We're trying to be polite... no below-the-belt hits.
All I know is that the one person I know who owns a PS3 (I seriously know very few gamers in general so that's not a bad figure in any way) has never even tried Home. Its completely optional and is in no way forced onto you. You have to download it manually don't you?

Yes, and you certainly don't want to. That hard drive space and bandwidth could serve better purposes, like absolutely anything you can imagine.

See this is why I don't get how Home can be a mark against the PS3, given that it's not a compulsory download/update or anything. Avatars on the other hand are kind of forced on you, though I don't have a problem with the little evil bastards.

I'm not saying it's a mark against the PS3. In my first post in this thread, I said it'd be a mark against the PS3 if you were ever forced to use it, because it's the absolute epitome of shittiness. However, it is completely optional, and you can delete it once you've tried it.
In that case, my bad. I just figured, the way people were posting about it that y'all were actually saying it's a big knock on the PS3.
Also, given what I know now and after having owned the 360 since launch, I think I can make a good judgement on what I'd go for if I was given the option between the two. PS3. Definitely PS3. The reliability of the 360 has been awful, customer service has been atrocious and they charge for, IMO a shitty online service. Honestly, the saving grace of the 360 is it's games and pad. But even those are starting to bore and annoy me. Both the pads I own have ridiculously loose sticks and the Play n charge kit gets stupidly hot.

Not to mention, the 360 has the worst D-Pad mankind has ever witnessed. Not saying the DS3's D-Pad isn't terrible, but it's nowhere as bad.

So...am I missing something, or how exactly are avatars forced on you?
I mean, I guess you have to make one per profile (in which you can just select a pre-made character), and the...what? You can ignore them. I mean, there are avatar games, but you're not obligated to play them any more than you're obligated to interface with Home. Games don't use them (except for XBLA titles which specifically advertise using them), you don't need to use an avatar to change your settings. It just kind of stands there if you don't want them.
Am I missing something? Really, I can't think of a case where you're forced to use avatars besides creating one for a profile.
Plus, the general consensus seems to be that even the worse avatar minigame can't compare to the horrific shitstorm that is PSN Home (which is, of course, optional in its own right, and apparently much, much worse on its good days).
On the issue of reliability, I can see where people are coming from (though I'm still on my launch Xbox 360), as it's a frightening premise. Knocking on wood, of course, if something happens to my BC PS3..which I'm pretty sure will cost me money to repair, if I can repair it at all...I will probably feel very different (and be very angry), though as it stands, I personally know people who have had all three consoles fail on them (though the Wii had the strangest turn of events that caused it to happen). But yeah, if you're worried about reliability, and don't want to go through the trouble of a return, that's a potential strike against the Xbox 360. And the older PS3s, too.

I really don't get this consensus or how some people consider Home offensively bad. It really isn't all that bad. At it's worst, it's just boring anymore. Just about anybody that messes around with it are people who don't subscribe to the GIFT and will leave you alone 90% of the time. The mini-games range from "Eh" to "Kinda neat", and there's a certain novelty in being able to go into area's designed by game developers to look like, or almost directly copy, areas of their games. (Like the Abstergo Labs from the AC2 space. The lab space from AC1 and the Hideout (or most of it) from AC2 are pretty much exactly the same from the main games) And there's a good bit of free content that you can get to decorate your space (which I admit might be why I'm not ready to hate it; I just really enjoy the decorating part) so you can do quite a bit without even spending a cent.
I get that most people don't want to do that, but I don't really see any reason to hate on it so much outside of the old stand-by: internet.

It's not boring anymore at its worst, it's boring anymore at its best. When you compare what Home is to what it was hyped to be at first, before its release, you can understand how people with great expectations will find it offensively bad: it is offensively bad. I just wish there was a way to remove even the install icon from the XMB completely and forget Home even exists. I'm not saying all these things because "internet", too, I'm honestly disgusted at what Home is, especially compared to what it was supposed to be. The fact that they actually SELL the assets is the greatest offender to me.
All I know is that the one person I know who owns a PS3 (I seriously know very few gamers in general so that's not a bad figure in any way) has never even tried Home. Its completely optional and is in no way forced onto you. You have to download it manually don't you?

It may suck, its shit, its abhorrent, it has horrible evil crap downloads that are slow compared to your 30 minute email downloads exclusively on the PS3, etc. But yet people use it and play it *shrug*, go figure.
I could not have asked fore a better response than this. A lot of what has been discussed went over my head simply because I haven’t experienced these systems but I’m sure I will come across a lot of what has been talked about and be better prepared for it. In the end I took the most repeated and logical advice, “chose the system that I think will have the exclusives that I can’t live without and the rest is gravy and ash”; I ended up going with the PS3 and fore my first two games I chose Heavy Rain and Metal Gear Solid 4. I am stoked to have the added luxury of the Blue-Ray player as well and so is my wife (seeing as how she abhors games in all forms, but I hope to break her of that).
I am grateful for all your impute and advice. I hope this thread doesn’t die seeing as how it has helped me so much and I’m sure could help others. I would love to hear your collective thoughts on the different games that you all love and cherish and why. Even if they are for the 360 I would be interested in hearing about your likes and dislikes because I hope to own a 360 some day as well.
All in all I am loving my PS3. Right off the bat though I am a bit annoyed by Home; I got in there and it was okay, it was interesting and all, but after about 5 seconds when I became board and I was ready to leave the mechanics for exiting Home were not immediately apparent. I am embarrassed to say that I still don’t know how to exit Home. I ended up turning off the PS3 and turning it back on; admittedly not a great way to start a relationship with a new electronic but it had to be done. I’m sure there is a way out that I’m just not getting. My problem isn’t that I’m too stupid to figure out how to escape from their sterile social environment (although it is a concern for me and I am looking into having my brain devolved back into it’s 12 year old state because apparently I was better at problem solving back then) but rather that their navigation system isn’t intuitive; it’s as if they are trying to trap you there in hopes of slowly substituting it for your real life. You can’t escape but you can easily break into a disco dance as a cry for help. Desperation in the form of groin thrusts is not a pretty sight.
Any way, that is my virgin take on the PS3 after having it for a day. My other comment would be that MGS4 has not let down the franchise and I haven’t had a chance to start Heavy Rain yet; I am waiting till I have a solid chunk of time to devote to my complete immersion.
Thank you all for helping make a big decision easier.
Like I said earlier in the thread in my opinion one of the greatest things about this gen is the various download services (on 360 especially with XBLA/XBLIG) so please spend some time checking out the funky little downloadable games available via the Playstation Store, there are some real gems on there (although right now you probably want to play the great big budget shiny graphics games ).
To exit any PS3 game/app/movie just press the PS button on your controller. It'll take you to the XMB (the PS3's operating system) and it should have an exit button in whichever column the game/app/movie was in. I don't think you're stupid but I wouldn't call it unintuitive either.
Ya, sorry for my conspicuous (or not so conspicuous) absence. I am not terribly great at threading (if that is what this is called; see I don’t even know the lingo) and it makes me nervous. I have dyslexia so I am very self-conscious about my written voice and have to proof reed even little snippets like this at least three times, it is extremely cumbersome and tiring.
You are absolutely right, I intend to imbibe the intoxicating visuals offered by the high budget games that I have agreed to enslave myself to when I paid their exorbitant price and damn-it if I’m not puking high res chunks of pulverized brain matter inside of a week. Once I have successfully ejected my useless gray matter and replaced it with pretty pixels of gray matter I can’t wait to try out the free content. All kidding aside I am actually pretty excited about it.
That is the single most frustrating gaming experience I've ever been part of.
Not that it's simply bad, it's just that it really should have been incredible, and instead it's an awfully put together turd that never quite shines, although it comes close once or twice.

It's really a hard call these days. I got both and the PS3 is really shining for me because the new Slims have that awesome 250 Gig harddrive. I'm buying up the PixelJunk games because they are awesome. I also am picking up some PS1 classics because they're cheep and fun. The improved PSP support isn't bad, and that's something that the 360 doesn't have.
The 360 does have Fable and Mass Effect going for it...
But the PS3 has the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV for MMOgoodnes. The Bluray is what sunk it for me through. LoTR Bluray collection + the various Disney Blurays have my wife and I drooling.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
MGS4 is a technically amazing game and it has some amazing sequences. BUT theres also stupid, big stupid, say waht you want about The Pain but attributing nanites to everything including
Vamp?
was just an immense amount of handwaving to dig himself out of a hole.

This reminds me of Super Mario RPG at the beginning where Peach is yelling: "Fight, Mario!! Fight!!!"

Maybe he did mean the old Xbox and he bought one.
And was probably surprised by its weight and size which then promptly crushed the OP.
Well, than an older-model PS3 was out of the question. He should have explained that.
Its talk like this that makes me laugh at all of the Home DLC they offer up as 'bonuses', as anyone cares if I have an Ezio/Altair suit, or a Big Daddy special outfit. Maybe 5 people would see it, and it sure as hell isn't anyone I know.

edit: Oh hey, some wii crap is there too. Ignore that.
I won't speak to the quality or whether they're worth your time. Just that they're there.

I'm pretty sure you could just hit the Playstation home button (the round middle one) and exit it from the XMB though.
Also, should have bought Uncharted 2.

Oh and Meryl.
