Terribly late to the party but I picked up a Wii yesterday, I already have a few games...
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Mario Kart
New Super Mario Bros
Mario Galaxy
Tiger Woods PGA Tour '10
Cooking Mama 2 (not for me)
Peppa Pig (for the son)
I've had a scan through Metacritic's top games and have a few ideas of games I'd like to get, mainly...
Smash Bros.
Okami
Silent Hill
Mad World
I'd like some more recommendations though, please, I'm open to most genres, although I do like RPGs, Action games and would like to know if there are any games that take advatange of the Wiimote in interesting ways.
Games that would interest the son are good too, he's only three, but he enjoys when we play Wii Sports Bowling together and likes watching the Peppa Pig game and Cooking Mama. He's a bit young to use the Wiimote solo though.
I know Shiren is on the Wii? I think? But are there any other good roguelike-esque games on the Wii?
I don't have the Motion Plus accessory, does it make a huge difference to games that take advantage of it?
Thanks.

there are a lot of wii games you might be interested in that you haven't mentioned. off the top of my head, I'd recommend taking a peak at
Muramasa
Punch-out
Fragile
Red Steel 2
A Boy and his Blob
Boom Blox 2
Metroid Prime Trilogy (though good luck finding it)
No More Heroes 1 and 2
Chocobo Dungeon (hey, I have a friend who really likes it :P)
Battalion Wars
Super Mario Strikers Charged
The Conduit (though I'd recommend waiting for the sequel)
Games to look out for that come out in the next 3 months:
Galaxy 2
Monster Hunter Tri
Sin and Punishment 2
Metroid: Other M
that's all I can really think of off the top of my head
edit: or yeah, go to the wiki
The Wiki looks full of information, I'll have a read.
I'm going to sound quite foolish, but is Monster Hunter like a pumped up Pokemon?
I'll definitely try and get my hands of Metroid Prime Trilogy, if not I've finished Prime and might be able to get 2 for the GC and 3 (solo) for the Wii.
Baroque looks like it might be up my alley, anyone played it?

I personally recommend Bit.Trip Beat and Bit.Trip Core on WiiWare every time someone makes a thread like this. Watch a video or two on youtube. The first game is basically musical Pong and you hold the Wiimote sideways and rotate it forward or backward to simulate a paddle controller.
My Backloggery
Imagine Zelda crossed with Pikmin crossed with Harvest Moon.
It should also be dirt cheap by now since none of you bought it.
I ordered a whole bunch of games for around £10 a piece, including Little King Story, Murasama and Boom Blox Bash Party!
(I also got Might & Magic Clash of Heroes and a few Dragon Quest remakes for the DS for £14 each.)
I think you're thinkin of monster rancher :P
I'm not too familiar with monster hunter myself but from what I can gather it's a lot like phantasy star online only with an emphasis on taking down gigantic monsters and crafting equipment.
Based on my experience with the golf games in Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, I'm going to say very much yes. I'll probably never touch original Wii Sports again except for maybe the practice modes it has because Wii Sports Resort is just that good.
Other games that really need picking up are Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection, and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Those two games need more love.
I WILL NOT BE DOING 3DS FOR NWC THREAD. SOMEONE ELSE WILL HAVE TO TAKE OVER.
Spoiler contains Friend Codes. Won't you be my friend?

Lesser known's but quite cheap and decent;
Godfather: Blackhand Edition is pretty great actually. Visually below average but the gameplay makes up for it. Melee combat is so much more satisfying with the motion-controlling than it is with simple button presses.
House of the dead: Overkill is fucking priceless. Non-stop action light gun shooter with one of the funniest narratives I've played through. So B-movie it's delicious.
Little King's Story is a cutesy but quite hard rpg-type game. Never got a chance to put too much into it so I've had little experience in it but what I did play was great. that and the reviews. They rock.
Metroid Trilogy is the best value for money title, kinda like the Orange Box for the Wii. Sadly, you're gonna be paying top dollar for a pre-owned version unless you get lucky at a retailer.
Endless Ocean 2 is my everyday game. So great for just relaxing but manages to not fall into the boring category. One of the Wii's better looking games.
As in, you're getting 20% of the real experience.
This.
It's a completely different game with Motion+.
Also if you like games like Shiren, there is a Baroque on the wii but I've only heard bad things about it.
Edit: Just saw you had Galaxy.
RE4
No More Heroes
Endless Ocean (probably the second one too, since it's supposed to be better all around, but I haven't tried it yet, and the first was very good regardless)
Zack & Wiki
I second both of these recommendations. Klonoa is short but very sweet, and De Blob is just awesome all around.
It's arguably the best platformer on the PS1 and certainly the best one on the Wii
And at a bargain price too
Games for you and your son.
Boom Blox Party Bash - fantastic party game where you throw/pull/explode blox at other blox. My nieces adore it.
Rayman raving Rabbids: Rabbids go Home! - is supposed to be really great for kids. Haven't gotten around to trying myself but apparently my nephew can't stop giggling (and mimicking the screams!) at the bunnies.
de Blob - is a platformer and a tricky one for a 3 year old at that. He might grow into it though and it has a cutesy charm to it. I personally enjoyed it myself.
MadWorld - Okay, I'm kidding.
Mario Kart Wii - is an obvious addition. Blast for everyone in the family.
Warioware smooth moves - is a quirky minigames compilation that your kid should be able to play.
Excite Truck/ Excitebots - are fantastic racing titles. I actually prefer Excite truck to Mario kart. This is the one game where my nieces could actually beat me, even when I was trying to beat them. Really easy to play.
Klonoa - I just got and haven't had a chance to show my nieces but it's so easy to play and there's no doubt they'll love it.
Games for you!
RE4 Wii Edition - Best version of the game and to date, the best port enhanced by waggle.
MadWorld - Brutal arcadey action. Lots of blood and splitting folk in half. Fun times!
No More Heroes series - I hated the first, found it to be tedious but some people liked it. The second is pretty damned awesome. Definitely one to keep away from the child though.
House of the Dead: Overkill - standard light gun game with very little else but the narrative is superbly done. Classic B-movie fare with lots of unlockables.
Ghost Squad - See above, only llots more unlockables. It also doesn't have a story but has a better frame-rate than Overkill..... Strangely.
Zack & Wiki make a Porno - is totally a lie. They do nothing of the sort. They solve puzzles, fiendishly hard puzzles which caused me to die lots of times. But that was mainly due to me skipping the pre-puzzle video. Your kid might actually like watching this and telling you where to go tbh.
Metroid Trilogy - is the standard metroid games. ON ONE DISC! CRAZY RITE!? No seriously, nigh impossible to get and if you do, I hate you.
Godfather Blackhand Edition - is a wii port of the other console versions but with added waggle. First non-Nintendo game I bought for my launch Wii ( there was nothing at launch, nothing third party at all) and I loved it to bits. Still do. Melee is handled via waggle motions but done in a really reasonable manner. You don't look like a drunk uncle at a birthday party trying to hit a pinata. That isn't there.
Zelda TP - is an obvious one really.
Endless Ocean 2 - Found the first one kind of boring tbh but this second iteration is incredible. The visuals are breath-taking and you only have to visit the EO2 thread here to see some of the pictures that people have taken in-game. Though admmittedly the images are rendered high-res, not the actual game.
He already likes Mario Kart, although he tends to just have fun going round in circles laughing like a maniac, any offers of help are swiftly rejected.
Raving Rabbids and Warioware look like winners for him.
I'll definitely try and grab RE4, No More heros and Zack & Wiki (oh, and Klonoa).
Slight tangent, but do 3rd Party GC controllers work on the Wii? I plugged one in and the LEDs on it light up but the buttons/stick don't seem to respond. I can't find my original GC controller anywhere
If you're going to get a MotionPlus, get the Red Steel 2/MotionPlus bundle. RS2 is absolutely awesome. If you ever wanted to be a badass magic cowboy samurai that tears through bandits and ninjas in a Japanese-themed Wild West with a sword and guns, you need to check it out. The swordplay is what RS1 should have been like and is incredibly satisfying. It's also one of the best looking games on the Wii. Think a lower definition Borderlands.
You're already planning on checking out MadWorld, thus saving me the trouble of recommending it. Good on you! I'm still recommending it anyway, and it was about $8 on Amazon just recently. At that price there is absolutely no reason not to own it.
Let's see...pretty much all of first party Nintendo titles are a given. Metroid Prime Trilogy is evidently out of print now, so if you see it don't hesitate to get it even at full retail price.
Resident Evil 4 is a must, even if you've already played it to death. The new controls are absolutely worth it.
I've heard fantastic things about Muramasa and Little King's Story, but unfortunately I have yet to check them out for myself. I'm personally really interested in Muramasa, it looks gorgeous.
I like No More Heroes when it's not in GTA mode. When you're wrecking mans and taking on the bosses it's pretty great, but the other half of the game is pretty much tedium defined in video game form.
Your son might dig NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. I've heard it's not as good as the original, but I personally really liked the sequel. You'll probably want a Classic or GameCube controller to play it, though. WiiMote-only controls are imprecise, and the nunchuck setup doesn't work as well as CC or GC. My preferred setup is GC.
As for your son, I can imagine seeing a younger kid loving Warioware Smooth Moves. It's a game where you need to preform a waggle-based action in response to what's happening on the screen and it speeds up the better you do. It's disappointing in multiplayer (due to sharing a single controller), but quite fun in a round-robin setup. There's also a little bit of crude humor (bodily noises, plucking nose hairs etc..) if this is a concern.
I loved the original and 2 but never played any other the other SH games. What's with the psychology warning at the start though, and...
I usually panic during the scenes where you're running through the 'alternate reality' where everything is iced over and end up going in circles.
One of my favourite Wii games so far.
I bought the console back up yesterday morning and put it on the SDtv, it look so much better.
No component cables?
I'm kind of sad to hear SEGA won't be making the sequel for the Wii, if at all. ):
Edit: I actually do have component cables, spent a good 45 mins or so tryingdifferent system and television configurations to get the picture right but it would still remain stretched and all washed out.
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
You might also enjoy Ogre Battle 64 on the Virtual Console, but personally I prefere FE so far. Oh, and get the Wii Ware Lost Wind games (if you have to pick, take the second one).
